The Boogey Man (1980)
Creepy and atmospheric
I was just telling somebody about this not too long ago and they thought I was talking about that horrible new BOOGEYMAN from this year. Anyway I haven't seen this in a couple of years but as soon as I track down a DVD I will. It's nothing like that other one I mentioned. It's better.
From the first scene where a boy and his sister's mother is in a very kinky bondage session with her boyfriend. The boy Will is tied down to the bed only to get free and eventually stab and kill his mother's lover(Boogeyman). This is all witnessed by the mirror which the Boogeyman comes through in spirit.I know it sounds weird but this is actually a creepy, and somewhat scary flick. It has a certain grim atmosphere that reminded me a lot of the original 'Halloween'.The musical score that accompanies it is also good. There's also more than a few deaths, some gory.I think one of the reasons it might not be that known is because of the weird factor. But that doesn't change the effectiveness of this.I recommend checking this out or maybe even a purchase.
Killer! (1989)
I Like This.......
I saw this on cable over 10 years ago and wondered why I never heard of it. It was exactly my kind of horror flick, creepy and atmospheric. It had that same Evil Dead/Texas Chainsaw Massacre feel. One of those movies in which the low budget and the film stock that is used actually helps the atmosphere. The acting wasn't bad and there was a good amount of gore from what I remember. I have'nt been able to ever find this movie and when I would ask people they would have no idea what I was talking about. I almost started to question myself if I had even seen it,LOL. But now checking the IMDb I see I had. I would pick this up if it ever came out on DVD.
Just Before Dawn (1981)
Very Good Slasher Flick
I first saw this one afternoon in the 80's on network T.V. I think I was like 9.(Picture seeing a violent horror flick nowadays on regular television). Anyway, I've seen it again years later and it's like I remembered,it's really good, scary flick. I think the reason why it might of gone unnoticed is cause it wasn't followed by a ****load of sequels i.e. Friday the 13th. But it's one of those movies that takes the original idea and does it better. Even though this is a killer in the woods flick like Friday,it has more in common with the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. That's because the movie lays down a certain atmosphere and feeling of dread, even in broad daylight. And the killers feel more threatening than in Friday. There's also a good amount of suspense. I recommend seeing it now that it's being released on DVD in late July.
Wrong Turn (2003)
OK for a new horror flick but.........
Saw this the other day for the first time and I'll say it's OK if you ask me to pick from all the current horror flicks. But the only spoiler here is for Rob Schmidt. He must have seen and loved this great 80's slasher, Jeff Leibermans' "JUST BEFORE DAWN"
....spoiler.......
JBD is a backwoods slasher with mountain men, that you come to find are inbred twins. There are a lot of scenes that are scary and atmospheric. But the main thing is you'll notice the very similar storyline and even a scene or two that is "Wrong Turn". One of my favorite horror flicks,"Just Before Dawn" is finally being released on DVD in July. Worth checking out.
Kids (1995)
Hits very close to home!
I would like to address the people that called the movie disgusting and disturbing. I guess if you didn't grow up in these kind of urban environments,it could be. Me growing up in NYC can't agree. A lot of things in the movie were very familiar to me. I was 17 when the movie came out,and 27 now. Besides the situations and dialogue portrayed, even some of the places were familiar to me. Washington square Park for one, and the club Area(a.k.a.Vinyl) was a regular afterhours hangout for me until it closed last April. The club they used in the movie was actually the Tunnel, cause Area wouldn't let cameras in.
I even still see the black kid Harold from time to time, still chillin'. Bottom line is I was in some ways like this,I know people that were or still like that, and this movie is straight up reality. The people that said the movie was disgusting are probably the same people that used to frown or stare when me and my friends used to have these conversations. GET IT TOGETHER. KIDS IS REAL.
Jack-O (1995)
B-movie? More like Z-grade.....
I've always loved horror flicks. From some of the usual well-known like "The Exorcist" to some of the more underrated like "Black Christmas" or "Just Before Dawn". But who are people kidding, even calling this trash a b-movie. It's straight up bottom-of-the-barrel Z-grade. The acting is the worst ever on film. Really,I've seen better on an episode of the "Young and the Restless"...SPOILER...Lookout for when the woman comes to tell them about the legend of Jack-o. She pauses sometimes for a matter of seconds as if someone is flashing her cue cards and she's struggling to read her lines. A RIOT!
Oh,and besides the bad acting, absolutely no gore or F/X. And Jack-o looked like a plastic lit pumpkin. Watch Linnea Quigley in "Night of the Demons",or "Silent Night,Deadly Night",far superior flicks.
