Dolittle (2020)
First time I've laughed out loud for a long time
Ok this isn't the best film I've ever seen but it is funny and there were at least 4 times I laughed out loud - it was fun and charming. I just wanted a feel good movie. This worked to brighten our day.
Yes I know Robert Downey Jr. welsh accent is a bit all over but he didn't do too badly and Michael Sheen was as fabulous as ever.
Watch this if you just want entertaining I think even the toughest critic will laugh at least once.
Disconnect (2012)
Excellent movie - all students should watch it!
This movie crept up on me, I watched it simply because I think Max Theriot is starting to grab my attention as one to watch and I like Alexander Skarsgaard (ok I admit he's my eye candy!) The film kept my attention all the way through - which is odd for a fairly long film such as this but it weaves the 'relationships' together well and although, like others I felt the endings were a little half done (this could be intentional however as you know deep down that most if these situations would end with a LOT more c**p than we saw) Jason Bateman was outstanding and I'm guessing proved many skeptics wrong with his performance - in fact most of the cast were excellent - I have read some other low rates reviews and two things stuck out for me - firstly although Sigur Ross didn't feature on their ost, their front guy Jonsi did (the final scene features his track) and lastly someone stated that kids wouldn't play these kind of games these days - well working in a college I can vouch for the fact they certainly do! Only last week I had 6 conversations with students being bullied by mobile or on social media sites so it really does happen. I came away from this movie feeling that our students wouldn't go far wrong watching this! Lastly I thought the cinematography was superb. The lighting was subtle and using the screen for typed conversations enhanced the character portrayals for me. Certainly a director I'll now look out for.
Eldra (2002)
Beautifully, well crafted film, reminiscent of old wales
I absolutely adored this movie. The setting and style of the film is very reminiscent of my time growing up in rural north wales. I found the film very believable, my mother and sister also watched Eldra, and we all commented on how 'welsh' it was. The ruralness came across wonderfully, and the choices welsh families had in that era, were well thought out. Eldra's family obviously come across as very Romany Pagan, and it's this which causes the conflict between them and their neighbours, this is not unheard of still to this day. It's only when Eldra befriended a local, we find that both communities and cultures could come together, if this is allowed to blossom. Maybe more folk should watch this movie! I highly recommend it, and as a non welsh speaker (okay, apart from the odd word here and there), i found the subtitles just fabulous!
