To the Manor Born: 25th Wedding Anniversary Special (2007)
Updating the classics
I've just watched this chapter and I hope they will do some more. I enjoyed it a lot. The actors are as fresh as ever, they depict the characters after some years later and it seems to me realistic the evolution of the pair after living together for so long. As always, my favourite is Angela Thorne, (it doesn't mean I don't praise Penelope Keith and Peter Bowles, but I've always had a soft spot for Farrington), and I also found the butler an interesting new character. Updating To The Manor Born is bold and I understand there are some aspects that cannot be like in the old times, just because they no longer exist (as many brilliant actors from the original series who died), but there are some present day issues that annoy Audrey (like Big Brother or the rock concert) that will end up in the funniest settings. Finally, the photography is better than ever, the landscape is fabulous and the film has been shot gorgeously, the landscape becoming one character more, as it is the Manor Born.
El coronel Macià (2006)
A hero who struggled for the Independence of Catalonia
This is a film anyone who wants to learn about Catalan history must see. The story of one of our heroes, from a country who had one of the most ancient Parliaments in Europe, where to achieve this heroic position is not necessary to kill any man. Macià was a patriot. He was a colonel in the Spanish army until he was forced to choose between Catalonia, the nation without state in Spain since 1714 when we lost a war that made us become part the Spanish state, and Spain. Catalonia, with its capital Barcelona worldwide known because it was where the Olympic Games took place in 1992. The film takes place from the 1905 until 1933. Macià started as a Spanish soldier and ended becoming a convinced Catalan pro-independence. He struggled always with honor to get the freedom for our country. Unfortunately, the dictatorship in Spain with Franco hid his portrait. Nowadays, his character has been recovered, when our autonomy is being threatened by the Spanish state and many people feel trapped in a state that has never clearly understood our identity.
SPOILERS
The portrait of a man who was famous all over Europe when he tried to finish with the dictator Primo de Rivera in Spain.
ENDING OF THE SPOILERS
A man who everyone in Catalonia loved because he truly loved his country and who believed that a nation with a language, a history, a culture, a literature deserves to have its own state. A nation which still keeps its language but it is not so well known as other countries like Scotland.
Wife vs. Secretary (1936)
Not so typical
Jean Harlow and Clark Gable do share chemistry. You can check it in any of the films they were together, but in this one it is so subtle and exquisite... From here on, it contains definitely spoilers: I've read that this is the typical story with a typical happy ending. I don't agree with that, in fact I strongly disagree. It is obvious that the secretary is attracted to the boss, just look at her staring at him in his bedroom, and she doesn't seem so drunk as he is. It is a story of sacrifice, a story about a non confident wife, an immature husband and a good girl who prefers to end up attached to one boy of her kind who doesn't want her to work and prefers her at home having lots of babies. Where is the happy ending???
