Invasion (2021)
Not your typical sci-fi series
I can understand why there are so many negative reviews for Invasion. It's simply a different way of approaching sci-fi, in my opinion a lot fresher and substantial than the typical action hero thing. This series is not only about about aliens invading, it is first and foremost a drama about the concept of invasion: a broken marriage by infidelity, a bullied boy, American soldiers in middle East, Japanese lesbians being constantly judged. See my point? Aliens and space ships we have seen and enjoyed for years, but this is so much more: what would that mean to humanity, that still must live through the every dramas that actually embody our lives.
Also, great way to handle the "monster", and build mystery...
Not so great though, the misleading device of using a bug Hollywood star in the first episode only.
Chicuarotes (2019)
A wasted opportunity
Gael García seemed to find a good topic, even a decent story. But instead of giving space and allowing the characters to be (I'm no longer here and even Roma are good examples of this), Garcia Bernal simply aligns them to the soap opera stereotypes that Mexicans are so used to (if not sick of) by now. For a moment, I thought I was watching La Rosa de Guadalupe (Televisa does produce the movie and it shows). Luckily other Mexicans creators are doing what Gael did not dare to do.
