The Ledge (2022)

Entertaining and suspenseful, especially when allowing the story some leeway.

Low budget thriller was entertaining and suspenseful. Only 6 characters in whole movie and pretty much shot in one location, the ledge. Mostly likely in a studio BUT was still suspenseful.

Allow some leeway for storyline, ie girl fighting off 4 men and climbing a mountain with little equipment.

Main male character, Josh, totally unlikeable and was eagerly waiting for him to get his comeuppance. Other male characters all weak and deserved their fate.

The Silencing (2020)

Kept us gripped from start to finish.

You know the movie has captured your attention when you don't play on your phone. Gripping from start to finish.

Main male lead good, an anguished character. Apparently from GoT, but I am one of the 8 people in the world who have not watched that series.

A few red herrings to keep you guessing.

Recommend, plenty of worse ways to spend an hour and a half.

Prey (I) (2022)

Great scenery with brains winning over brawn.....

Loved the main female lead who played Naru. Her brains triumphing over the brawn and testosterone of her brother and the other Comanche hunters and ultimately the Predator. Thought she was a great actor.

Infact enjoyed all the native American actors in this movie. Don't need to have lots of well know Hollywood stars, if the story is there.

The story is not perfect but don't believe all those 1 and 2 reviews, every movie needs some poetic license.

As others have said, a tale of David and Goliath, where brains and planning can outwit brawn.

Unhinged (I) (2020)

Fun action movie with a few great violent scenes

Great acting by Russell Crow who plays a menacing unhinged man well. He is very scary. A great role for him.

Look it's an action movie for entertainment, so the story is not plausible and the main female character makes some dumb choices, but it is still very watchable and very entertaining.

Some great violent scenes, especially enjoyed the one at the diner and another one on the motorway with the police.

Midnight Diner (2019)

What's not to like? Beautiful stories and delicious food.

Beautiful stories based on the everyday lives of the characters eating at the Midnight Diner. Where strangers bond over the food created by the Master/Chef. There is no menu, you say what you'd like to eat and if Master has the ingredients, he will make it.

Stories covering the topics we all deal with, love lost and won, sickness, friendship, careers, am I enough? Etc. Friendships are formed at the diner, overseen and guided by the Master. The stories are slow and gentle. Great dialogue and characters.

Also delicious food is cooked and shared. Always feel hungry after watching.

This series is set in Shanghai, which just looks glorious at night. Some great city scenes.

There is nothing not to like about this series/season. Also recommend the Midnight Diner - Tokyo Stories series. Based on Manga book of same name.

The Mustang (2019)

Fantastic Story and Scenery - rate very highly

A great indie film, we were engrossed in the story the entire movie. Beautiful scenery and magnificent horses. Matthias Schoenaerts was fantastic in his role as the main character Roman. Also enjoyed Bruce Dern, in his role as main rancher.

Escape: Puzzle of Fear (2020)

Going against the grain but I loved it.

Unsure why so many bad reviews. It wasn't bad. Bats well above it's current rating of 3.3.

I think a few reviewers missed the nuances in the early stages of the film.

You knew who he was but there were still a couple of twists at the end.

Watched it again to pick up the clues I missed first time around.

Let's Not Meet (2018)

Deserves better than its current rating of 3.8 - don't let the low reviews put you off.

Nice low budget indie slasher style movie. Good lighting to see what was happening as set at night. Nice reveals from the shadows and a few jump scares. The characters were likeable. Go the girl power. Watch past the credits for bonus scene.

Desolate (I) (2018)

Worth more than its current 4.9 rating

Unsure why not rated higher. Good indie film. Main character Billy Stone was likeable. Liked the hot dry rural setting, showing the grim realities of farming with no water and the breakdown of local community and influx of drugs and prostitution/human trafficking. Becoming a eat or be eaten mentality. Enjoyed.

Cadaver (2020)

Average. There are no twists.

The only good thing was the cool old hotel setting. The plot was predictable, there is no twist to the story. Can guess what's happening from the beginning. The characters are not likeable so who cares if they live or die. The girl Alice needs a smack for wandering off.

Cell 211 (2009)

An excellent Spanish Thriller. Don't miss it.

Set in a Spanish prison. A riot breaks out, leaving a new guard on the inside where all the action is. His quick thinking to pretend to be a new prisoner saves his life for now... But the mayhem is only just beginning.

The two main players, Malamadre (Luis Tosar) as the top dog inmate and Juan (Alberto Ammann) as the young newbie guard act their parts extremely well. The other prisoners and guards are also believable. Prison is definitely not somewhere I want to go!

The movie is raw and realistic with the different fractions within the prison jostling for their position. The guards may not be any better than the prisoners. But it's also a movie about love, friendship and loyalty.

Don't let the fact it's subtitled put you off. You won't even realise your reading it and will be gripped to your seat for two hours. You don't need megabucks of special effects and well known actors to have a great movie. Just a good story well acted.

Any Hollywood remake is not going to be nearly as good as the original. So don't miss this one.
