Hard Promises (1991)
Great story of love and acceptance
Yes it's the typical love story, William Petersen is mad that his love is going to marry someone else and he goes to win her back, it's a very ordinary typical story, with an original bitter sweet ending. GREAT performance by William Petersen. It's about a man who finally realizes that he took advantage of the best thing he had, and in a 2 day span i believe he matures more in his entire life. Joey (William Petersen) plays the cool captain of the football team, lady's charmer, bad boy rough neck who's used to always having everything go his way. He loves to travel for long periods of time leaving his wife and daughter back home. The only way the marriage has lasted this long is because he comes home sweeps his wife off his feet, becomes dad of the year for one day out of the year, mends his wife's heart only to rip it out again and leave. Finally his wife is tired of being a life long one night stand, and is engaged to Walt. Joey's daughter (who absolutely idolises her father) sends him a wedding invitation so he'll come back home. He's oblivious to the fact they even got divorced, and he is stabbed with cold jealous Immaturely he first gets to town and walks up and punches walt in the face. The next day he tries his hardest to win his wife back, and she realizes she does still love him. The night before their wedding they have a romantic intimate night and Joey thinks everything is alright. But Walt comes to the house the next morning and she chooses him. Hurt and confused he goes and gets a job, prooving to his wife he swears he will not leave (which is NOT another lie, he finally realizes how great he has it and is serious about staying.) His wife explains that she loves him, but she can't go back to all the heartache and she's made her decision. Finally he matures and it hits him that he screwed up the best thing he had, and for once he can't fix it with his charm, and he accepts it. The last scene wraps it all up; it's him and his daughter swinging and he's promising that he'll come back next summer and they can build a cabin together and she says "Daddy, you don't have to make me promises, i'll love you anyways."And he realizes this extreme truth out of his third grade daughters mouth, that love is complex and you can't weasel your way in and out of it. EVerything falls into place, he realizes the way things are suppose to be. Really great movie.
Beyond Borders (2003)
Very Great and Original
Though critics weren't raving about this movie, it was awesome. I think the reason critics and other people didn't like it is because it's real; it's a real movie and America, when presented with other countries problems just likes to turn our backs and try to persuade others it's unrealistic and a bad movie. Well they were wrong, this movie is great. Though it has a very sad ending, it's a very good plot. All the political problems that go on in the movie are very accurate to the time frame it gives you throughout the movie.
Jolie and Owen are great. Both portray their characters very well, but their chemistry wasn't as good as it should of been. Clive Owen plays Nick Callahan, a man with a huge heart for the refugees that he cares for. He holds a grudge against the rest of the world, for what's going on in his world, but you can see how passionate he is about what he does. The little speech that Nick gives Sarah in Ethiopia the last night that she's there is amazing. Clive Owen acts that part out SO WELL it's unbelievable. That part of the movie really sucked me in. Jolie plays Sarah Jordan, a little city girl who until Nick busts into a private party that she's at, is completely oblivious to what's going on in the rest of the world. Owen tugs on her heart when he comes to the party that night with one of his refugee boys, JoJo. After that night, she visits his refugee camp, and also develops a passion for these people. She comes back from Ethiopia and starts working at the UN. I love to see how Jolie's character matures throughout the whole movie. And I loved seeing how each time Nick and her meet in some war torn country, their relationship keeps growing and they start to fall in love. The settings that these meetings take place are full of war and death, but it's amazing to see in such a terrible place, love can still bloom, and there's still hope there. Though like I said, Jolie and Owen didn't have much chemistry on the screen, it's still an original and beautiful love story. VERY VERY sad ending, but it is anticipated the whole movie.
I hope everyone goes and sees this movie! It's a very real, very true, tear jerking movie. This one will tug on your heart. And the world needs to be more aware of what some people do for others, like refugee camp workers and relief doctors. We overlook these occupations, but it's really amazing and quite unbelievable what these people, who don't ever get any credit for how brave they are do. OUTSTANDING.
The Interpreter (2005)
Best Movie i've seen this year!
The Interpreter is AWESOME! I saw it last night, opening night and was absolutely thrilled with it!Nicole Kidman never fails to deliver, she was outstanding, but NOTHING compared to Sean Penn. I've said it once and i'll say it again, Sean Penn is the best actor of our generation. He was absolutely brilliant in The Interpreter.
This movie had a great plot. And very real, I think Maboto, the country Nicole Kidman grew up in, in the film represents Zimbabwe, and what's going on there, and how we just turn our backs against Africa. The Interpreter doesn't have some huge twist at the end, but a lot of little twists throughout the whole thing, making you sit on the edge of your seat. Though during the movie you have to take in a lot of information about problems in Africa, world leaders, what's going on at the UN, and having to learn about about Broome and Keller's past, it's not too much information to get you confused, but enough to keep you thinking the whole time.
As the plot unfolds, so does Silvia Broome's past and Tobin Keller's past (Kidman and Penn) both have a lot of heartbreak in their lives, and a lot of commotion going on around them. Their similarity in hurts and trials makes them seem like two puzzle pieces fitting together when they're on screen together.
This movie is a suspenseful thriller that will get you emotionally attached to everything and everyone that's involved. Like i said, this movie is by far the best i've seen all year, i hope everyone goes to see it. Not just because it's an outstanding movie, but it's telling the world something, trying to send a message across that we need to pay more attention, and have more compassion to problems other than our own. ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIC FILM!
Message in a Bottle (1999)
A truly outstanding film!!
My favorite romance movie of all time! If anyone hasn't seen this movie, you have to! A dramatic romance: the kind of movie every girl loves! And even though this is a chick flick, i suggest all you boys see it too, it's fabulous. Kevin Costner and Robin Wright Penn really pulled it off. With the comic relief by Paul Newman. Costner and Penn had so much chemistry on the screen, it was outstanding!I was a little shocked at the end, when Garret dies saving a family. It turned into a little bit too much of a 'lover boy saves the day' movie, but i loved it anyway. Also, i loved the location of the movie. And it was a smart choice to film it in Maine, rather than actually in North Carolina. I loved what they made the town to be, just a simple fisherman's town. Garret's life seemed very appealing to me, a life of simplicity. I was very intriged by Garret Blake; a man who has a passion for the sea, he is 'rich in simple pleasures'(from the movie)he likes to be isolated form the rest of the world. And though he is a real gentlemen, and the way he acts makes it seem like he's so confident, and has everything under control, you can see how deep his pain goes, his loss. And it is just beautiful how much Garrett still loves Catherine. Garrett is a very mysterious person, with so much pain stuck inside him. I love one of the last scenes, when he's riding out to throw his last bottle out to Catherine. and he yells to his dad from the boat. You know exactly what's going on; he's finally discovered what to do, his wound is finally healing and he's beginning to have love in his life again. He's finally chosen, like his dad told him to do, "you have to choose, between yesterday and tomorrow" He chose tomorrow and he chose to let his heart love again, love Thereasa. This film is truly magnificent!!
