Masukarêdo hoteru (2019)
Honestly, it's a yes.
Watched the movie after reading the book and I think it's a good adaptation. They made a good attempt at giving a visual flair to the original source.
So as much as I appreciate it as an adaptation especially if we compare it to similar works made in the past I'm not sure the movie itself is that good to stand alone for someone who is not that interested in the story.
If you read the book most of the time it will be people trying to piece the clues together and investigate and think, but everything in the movie happens at once, which I somehow appreciate because it has a good rhythm and I enjoyed the fact that the hotel customer stories intertwine more compared to what goes on in the book but at the same time everything happens so fast and it doesn't really give the viewer the time to wonder about what is going on, it's just one twist after another.
Rant about the plot (spoiler area): X4 gets painted as some kind of genius but then has the super asinine idea of waiting just outside the hotel for the whole damn night while is was pouring. I don't know: just go back a couple more times and wait for the staff to start the night shift, wait in the lobby, you really could not come up with a better solution??! Geez
The acting anyway is good. I'd still recommend the movie.
Suzume no Tojimari (2022)
It's good time
So, it arrived in theaters yesterday and I finally got to watch it. To put it shortly I got to say I think the movie was very entertaining, at the same time I feel like the story is nothing new.
It seems like with Shinkai is kind of a given (great visuals, not amazing plot) and this movie does not surprise us on that matter.
If I have to rank the movies I've seen from him I'll still put it behind Garden of words (which I love irrationally) and Your name but ahead of Weathering with you that isn't my favorite.
I would still totally recommend it because it's a very enjoyable movie, the story takes us across a good portion of Japan and the different locations and characters we met are very interesting and nicely portrayed. Go watch it in theaters if you can!
So-won (2013)
Above all a story of a father and a daughter
So Won (aka Hope also aka Wish) is a movie about a terrible event (the rape by a drunkard of a 9 yo girl) that shatters a family. It unravels slowly showing at first the parents (the father in particular case) who seem somehow too busy to take care of their daughter, then the tragedy happens, this part is not too graphic (thank God) but we are made aware that the poor girl will bear physical consequences for the rest of her life. Then there's the trial, and the need of money, and the shame for being at the center of attention. I was afraid this movie was going to be somehow a classic tearjerker describing the struggle of the family with money, work, slow/inefficient justice and so on. But the second half of the movie was about the father trying to get close to his daughter. And I think it was moving, and delicate at the same time.
The acting is very good. The food mascots costumes cuteness level was really over the top. Overall (as the rating suggests) I liked this movie, it was touching.
