Marple: Why Didn't They Ask Evans? (2009)
I gave up.
I gave up on this mess when they we 1/4 way through and had introduced at least 8 new characters in a remote family castle that all could have been guilty. Screams coming from a detached house, etc., etc, I haven't read the Christie book, went to the 'net to find out at where this thing was going and discovered the only thing in common with the book was the title.
Liked Hickson more as Miss Marple as well. This one presents as nothing so much as being an old busy body who needs to mind her own business.
Duel (1971)
Totally nonsensical premise
Possible only through the magic of camera angles, close ups, direction of view, etc. Very good example of being able to make the impossible seem possible through the camera lens.
Mystery!: Sherlock: The Abominable Bride (2016)
Don't go for dream sequence type stories
Was it all a dream? I don't know, don't much care. There were some good comic moments, and how they made Mycroft look like he was 400 pounds was really good work. The repartee between brothers was good too. But the main thrust of the story was lame. I hope they don't do this kind of thing again. They also used some mechanisms one does not see often, such as seeing the event as it's being related after the fact. I liked the camera work, and they worked hard to get the costumes and locales right. In other words, good production values. But, alas, the positives cannot make up for a story that, in the end, one does not understand what the point of it was. Perhaps it's just me, but I hope in the future they stick to more traditional story-telling.
Un monstre à Paris (2011)
Animation great. . .
Lucille is the girl of my dreams, or, I mean, well, a REAL girl LIKE Lucille is the girl of my dreams. Predictable story, but pleasant enough. The guitar playing, dancing flea. . . you have to be a child not to wince at that. I did not like the music. The credits listed the composers of "original score". Even what I think was meant to be the main song was not very pleasant. Bibo should have run them off and got another composer. The Paris setting is pleasant. I've been there and it brought back some memories. I think they could have left in a little bit of French dialogue - you know, the kinds of phrases that English speakers would no doubt still recognize - merci, au revoir, mademoiselle, etc. Overall a good time - I checked it out from the library, I'll get my own copy.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is one
of the best and most liked short stories ever written. It was written by the great humorist James Thurber. So, I was really looking forward to the movie. First half hour was great - established his work conditions, his love interest, "he don't get no respect", some decent imaginings using CGI that Danny Kaye could only have dreamed about, really decent beginning. About that time I started thinking, OK they only have an hour left, how are they going to get him in all these situations the trailer shows him in if they don't get going? Well, for this crowd it wasn't hard. He decides to go to Greenland, on the spur of a moment, and within 15 seconds he's there. Horrible transition, actually no transition. And it's like that for the rest of the film. Had lots of great potential, was living up to it, then it went all to pieces. Disappointing to say the least. Ben Stiller is fine, when he's an actor. On no account should he be a screenwriter or director. He doesn't know how to do those things.
