Canned-Laughter-Sitcoms-Dead!
14 December 2011
I Hate My Teenage Daughter: everything that is wrong with canned-laughter sitcoms with so-called punch-lines. I totally got tricked by a preview, but the execution was SITCOM-HELL. This format needs to retire, so that single camera comedies can have more room. These shows are uninspired and employ hacks that have been in the industry forever. They need to try harder. Seriously, stop this FORMULA. It isn't a winner. Boring. Excessively jokey with jokes that aren't even funny. Learn to write? Don't try so hard? There needs to be an end to these shows. Stop the formula of formulaic formula. There really has to be an end for these shows. The line-producers that get paid to make this recycled crap need to be unemployed. Mainly, they need to stop making these shows. At some point, these kinds of shows need to stop being made.

Detroit 1-8-7: Ice Man/Malibu (2011)
Season 1, Episode 11
9/10
187 back on track.
22 January 2011
I felt I owed this show a review after tearing one of the episodes apart previously. The conventions, story-lines, characters, dialogue, and environment add something special to this serial that is lost in other similar programs. In general, I despise cop/law dramas, but do appreciate character driven pieces, like the mentalist or house, for instance. Finch is strongly depicted by Imperoli. The long arcs are decent and relationships are dynamic enough, but I do feel the second season should push the characters further. I feel the subversion of police officers is a necessary evil when dealing with morality and rough justice in gray areas. In this episode, there are moments between Mason and Mahajan that come off so naturally, that I was impressed with the writing. The story was topical and used popular culture as a backdrop. I felt there was a Donnie Darko theme that was "borrowed", but other than that, it came across nicely. The variety of actors also gives this show a strong streak, because the variation seems enriching. Other than that, the show is a programming for an hour. Final note: I wish serials tackled subjects besides law enforcement. Imagine these same characters working at microbiologists dealing with invasive species and restoration in Detroit's eco-systems. Hey, it could happen.;)

Takers of Time: Yawn-Zee!
3 December 2010
Warning: Spoilers
So, what do we have here? Cops and robbers. Seems simple enough, so how is the subpar writing and direction going to fail these actors. Most of the performances are respectable except for Paul Walker who plays Paul Walker and Anakin Sky-Walker who plays an undersized butt-kicker/heist planner. Michael Ealy comes off the strongest as Jake Attica, where as Chris Brown is believable as his younger brother. T.I. Is so self-aware, he makes the snarky-eye-pop too loose. His character has no depth.

At no point in this movie do you care about any of the characters except for Jake Attica because of his loss and performance, but there is no real set up. It never feels like the writers created flesh and blood characters, but rather decided shoot-em-up style was enough to please the masses. What directors and writers seems to fail to understand, is that, if you don't have any likable protags, you can't expect anyone to give a rat's butt.

Jay Hernandez and Matt Dillion do fine, but there are so many characters in this movie, that the trite emotional b-lines to establish them as human seemed tagged on, rather than developed. Daddy dearest , oh my! With 4 writers working on this script, you would think one of them could write. They are just the hacks that make Hollywood so bad. I really can't blame the director as much, even though the action scenes had the creativity of a snail.

Besides that, Zoe was forgettable, and just doesn't have the chops; just a pretty face at this point in her career.

Idris is very respectable, but this movie doesn't help his career, which is booming.

There is one scene that bothers me that lets a frail Anakin Skywalker thrash three guys five times his size. This was bad casting or poor writing. At no point did I suspend belief in order for him to handle the brutality of that scene. Now, if a real writer wrote that scene, the character would have used his intelligence to defend himself, rather than martial arts on a body that is feather-like.

(Spoiler Alert) Oh, the ending; who cares- Walker and Idris escape? What the hell is that? So random. And the HEAT reference in the movie. Lame! Other than that, a big waste of time.

Contrived.
9 November 2010
Contrived, contrived, and even more contrived. This show had some promise, but if these obvious plot twists and star-crossed monotony continues, this show is going to fail. Detective Vikram Mahajan wasn't even close to breaking that girl. There was nothing interesting in her being broke other than that it was so easy. How easy? Uber easy. At no point did the writing make the case for her to reveal her guilt. He called me a bitch. Yeah, as superficial as she was written, that superficial twist was even more transparent. Yes, Fitch denies his true affections because he believed in his twisted sense of justice, but come on, Sanchez finding Stone in the elevator. Please. So boring. Try harder.

Timer (2009)
4/10
TIMER equals VOID and EMPTY.
30 June 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Oona is trapped in a silly world where electronic "timers" implanted in your wrist can dictate the exact moment you find true love. The only problem is that your soulmate must also get implanted with a timer.

Emma Caulfield does well with her performance of Oona and Michelle Borth adds a nice banter as her step-sister, Steph. John Patrick Harrington is serviceable as Mikey and there are no qualms about the supporting cast.

So, why did I give this a 4? Simply put - cliché and obvious plot. This movie is so predictable except for the ending which is a complete buzz-kill. And I wasn't drinking.

So, we have two sisters with timers that are broken in one sense or another. Steph falls in love with Oona's soulmate who isn't wearing a timer, who was previously married, but separated via death. He was convinced he was in love, but according to his timer, it was Oona the whole time. Lies.

Mikey romances Oona, but it isn't enough for the stupid screenwriter, who lets the timer pick Oona's soulmate at the end. This film had potential, but it's small scope and cliché twists and turns left me feeling empty.

Poetic Reality Rift
9 June 2010
A poetic embrace of ideas that have percolated in my own consciousness produce a vivid time-traveling adventure for Nemo. I'm sure this character was inspired by the childhood movie, Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland , a favorite of many. If this was the impetus, it sparked a creative entry into modern film-making of self-aware destination. The machinations makes this film entertaining and thought-provoking. The emotional ties to the characters generate enough empathy. Nemo is a likable character that goes through changes because of self-inflicted choices, his emotional struggles split between multiple realities.

Toby Regbo is the best incarnation of Nemo according to his performance, Jared Leto forgettable as always. I'm not sure what compels people to cast Leto, who has a vapidity about him that is amounts to a constant blank stare. Juno Temple gives an palpable emotional performance as younger Anna. This period of time and relationship is probably the strongest throughout the film. Elise is obviously bipolar by the first appearance by Clare Stone, who gives Sarah Polley a great lead in before she even gives the character a go. Give all the credit to Stone for this character. Polley is actually the perfect casting choice for the bi-polar, older Elise. Krueger really can't hide her accent at all and really as the same problem with Leto, which is, pretty faces don't make up for the lack of acting chops.

Stylistically and melodically, the poetry of visual style and musical accompaniment resonate. Mental stimulation is at the top of the Jaco Van Dormael's list. Factoids litter the piece without too much distraction from the story.

The only issue I see with this film is the runtime, which is 2hrs and 18 mins. It starts to lose its emotional power as it delves deeper into the confusion.

"We only exist in the imagination of a child with an impossible choice." That moment gave me the chills necessary for my 8. I was teetering at a 7, but that moment made this movie work for me.

Another cut can still help this movie, which can make it stronger.

Zonad (2009)

Zonad Zany Zimes Zeal Zippidity Zay
1 June 2010
Zonad might not get the appreciation from the description, but this movie was a pleasant surprise. I thought the reality created by the Carney Brothers was refreshing, lite, and enjoyable. At no point did I want to reject that ignorance and acceptance of the space visitor by the towns people, which is a credit to the writing, direction, and performances.

Janice Byrne enticed at every opportunity as the "precocious" and "sexually-frustrated" Jenny, giving Simon Delaney ample moments to shine in his claimed naivete. Delaney, as Zonad, exceeded all expectations, which there were none, so he gets many exaltations. The minor characters added enough charm and quaint towny-vibe to cause no distrust of them. Bonad's addition was a comic gem, the perfect antagonist for this piece. Donna Dent even sold her flirtatious motherly role very well.

Technically, there was nothing remarkable, but the cocaine induced speed up produce a chuckle along with the song choice.

Overall, nice zany moments, and a comedy worth watching.

An Oil Painting With One Frame Would Have Served Us Better
19 May 2010
Nicolas Winding Refn attempted a moody, somber tale of character purgatory with Christian Vikings? The imagery, though haunting and visceral, had added touches of post-processing softness, which again, goes with the dream-like, limbo inspired journey, but takes away from the weight of the film. This movie is bore-fest and deserves attention only for the costumes and landscapes.

Mads Mikkelsen portrays the One-Eye, mute warrior. Since the material is thin, as far as character growth and story, the director tries to weave acceptance of his damnation into it, but nothing resonates. I can't really look at Mikkelsen's performance, because he really didn't have much to work with. I put that on the writer/director. The deliberate lack of action-oriented camera work and the slow and steady pace might have been deliberate, but it gave no urgency to any of the situations, damning the action into wide shots of boredom.

The sound design added to the mood appropriately, but the foley was over done and inorganic during action scenes.

The gruesome combat scenes elicited no truth. The conflict seemed contrived and based on what the director wanted, rather than what the characters would have chosen if they had true voices.

The secondary characters were just LOOKS. It was as if the costume design, makeup, and stoic expressions all wasted. Everyone looked the part, but their performances were neither inspired nor directed well.

Even the native Americans were treated with no respect, which again, didn't add to the story. Rather, they were personified with arrows throughout almost the entire movie.

Acceptance, which comes to One-Eye at the end, just paralyzes the mind. There is no triumphant catharsis, but a stone-stacking, zen-state flashback, which is supposed to shed light on his giving in to the clubbing from the natives. This movie would have played better as a single frame of an oil painting, rather than a cinematic attempt.

High Desert Meets Bad Script: Don't Waste Your Time.
9 July 2009
Why does everyone think they have to make movies? Seriously, why does every hack from here to Tennessee believe making a movie is a great idea. So, this filmmaker, if you want to call him that decided that he needed a single location in the high desert to pull off one of the most boring, worst paced, pathetic attempts at film-making in the history of movies. First of all, there is nothing knew as far as story. Secondly, scenes transitions are horrible. Thirdly, the nature of the story is predictably boring. First rule of screen writing; VOICE OVER is used when you can't tell your story visually because you lack the proper skills. FLASHBACKS are the sign of someone with no idea when it comes to storytelling. I really feel for this guy and his team because I'm sure they worked hard on it, but it wasn't the right movie to make. Single location films pop up everywhere when someone wants to tell a crappy movie because of budget concerns, but when you add poor acting, crappy writing, bad editing, bad directing, and bad everything else, all you have is mediocrity.

Superb Animated Morality Tale
3 February 2008
As a vehicle for humanitarianism, tolerance, and justice in a chaotic world, this movie attempted to bring serious issues Americans face on a daily basis into the forefront. I think this movie succeeded in delivering a poignant message without being overly proselytizing or heavy-handed. It used the COMIC world of the JUSTICE LEAGUE to express ideas we all need to think about in this new age of uncertainty. We as a people must come together behind the common goals of protecting our civilization as well as our environment. We must strive to be more tolerant, open-minded, and conscious of the connectivity of all of us. This is not just a competition for survival, but a joint effort in preserving humanity and expanding our culture into a non-disruptive, steady equilibrium with all LIFE in general. The war is not against anything physical, but a subconscious self-destructiveness. We can change. Change is our greatest ally in the promotion self-preservation and universal balance. Do not get sucked into "THE CENTER." Question everything or the MACHINE/BEAST that is our way of life will destroy us all because we are too weak-minded to question it.

Genesis - Subvert Your Perception
2 February 2008
I have an ongoing argument with my friend about the genesis of this movie and my take is completely separate from the norms of an average movie goer or audience member. My perception is that the director/writer knows that these movies are ridiculously bad and finds solace in the humor of that. I believe it is intentional why others believe these people actually believe they are making real movies. My idea is that the director convinces soap stars and wannabe actors that this is a serious attempt at film-making, but that his true motivations are to make these B-comedies. It totally pokes fun at the limitations and lack of funds for these movies by making incredulous heartfelt scenes mixed with insanely farcical plot that renders all disbelief moot because it takes us where only the most retarded minds can go. They reuse locations and even actors for multiple scenes. They create mythology and accepted realities to generate absurd systems of norms as if their world works according to these extravagantly wedged axioms. I was completely blown away by bit after bit. I love this movie, and I think the best critics in the world could unravel by just drinking the koolaid this film presents. Either way, if you take it seriously or not, this movie owns in absurdity alone.

Contrived narcissism doesn't equal Art.
21 January 2008
The multi-verse of a narrative reminds me of how esoteric screen writing and film-making can be, the lacking of profundity in this film startling and depressing. Mr. August hasn't returned to his level of GO in quite some time, which is depressing just to imagine, his closeness to the Hollywood process tainting him. The puzzle he tries to weave into a masterpiece just isn't distant in form as it should be. Just read this synopsis: "A troubled actor, a television show runner, and an acclaimed video game designer find their lives intertwining in mysterious and unsettling ways" and tell me August is way too close to the subject material. The old adage, "write what you know" sometimes backfires, which I believe is the case here. There were a few moments of intricate genius with a correlative here and there, but for the most part the sanctity of the canvas created elicits only fractions of a pay off; in other words, this is an empty, vapid expression of expressionism rather than a meaningful dialogue on existentialism.

I Am Legend (2007)
5/10
Decent Will Smith, but vacuous story and inept special effects.
19 December 2007
How does Hollywood make tons of cash? Well, first off, you get a A-list star that publicly emits the good guy pheromone: Will Smith. Then you take a great sci-fi, apocalyptic narrative and strip all the excess fat and juicy details from it until you end up with a rail of its former self. Then you make sure that the narrative only has one main protagonist that needs to be paid reasonably. Make sure that your film heavily uses CG and blue screen. Now, you have this basic script with this A-list hero and weak special effects and you have I Am Legend.

All I have to say is that the basic movie-goer has no understanding of how or why they are getting ripped off. All they see is the pheromone ridden A-lister with his shirt off performing with a constant psychosis fervor and they are in heaven. They don't notice that the antagonists are without real back story, substance, or humanity. Why would an average movie-goer notice this? Now, considering I read a 10 year old draft of a much better version of this film, I feel completely cheated. 8.50 for a matinée. Damn, is it any reason people have stopped going to the movies. Even the most naive of movie-goer eventually figures out that movies are crap for the most part. They are product placement vehicles and absentminded gutter punk trash. No depth.

I want my depth. Did Will perform well? Yes. Did he earn his money? No. Why? He accepted the crappy script.

Anyone that thinks this is a quality film is probably 8-17 years old and doesn't have a clue of what a movie should be.

Shoot 'Em Up (2007)
2/10
Thoroughly bored out of my mind.
12 December 2007
I went into this with no expectations, but just a need to see some decent shooting choreography and action sequences. I was surprised by the casting and found Giamatti's rise to the A list recently to be more annoying than enjoyable. His character was really an adversary to Owen's anti-hero, but then again Owen's anti-hero really didn't resonate. The writing in this is so contrived and vapid that the need for some good characterizations and performances was its only chance. They just didn't delivery because of Davis' weak direction and the material they had to work with. I'm sure this was just a paycheck movie for both of them. It is always nice to see Monica. As far as the baby aeronautics and gun play goes I could have done without most of it. The attempt to be creative in the gun factory was also a snoozer. Lacking best describes this film.

You Kill Me (2007)

Don't buy the 7 rating for this 2 star dry comedy...
13 October 2007
I watched this movie with open acceptance, but it totally left me with a blah feeling. I'm not going to rehash the plot like a lot of the newblet commenting parties. I'll get down to the juice of it. Benny has become one of the most overrated actors of his generation; the truth about his performance utterly miserably. I know what he was going for, but he lacked any sincerity mixed with that lousy Buffalo accent of Polish decent. It was horrible. Tea and Benny's romance was completely unconvincing, because at no point did she seem weak enough to go with a guy that is 3 feet tall, has a face like a pickle, and enough sex appeal to turn on a Centurion during her most trying times. The writing was extremely poor, lacking the subtleties necessary to bull of this genre. The rest of the cast was just mediocre. The material was unoriginal and the fact that they entered the world of AA is just not fair. That just isn't respectful to the organization. I know Tea produced this, but I seriously believe she has a performance in her worth seeing one day, but not this day. I'm sorry you produced this film. This film was god awful. The end.

Shanghai Kiss (2007)

Kelly Hu is beautiful, but this movie is lacking.
31 August 2007
I'm doing this review to undo the harm a previous IMDb poster did to me. Most likely the reviewer had something to do with the production of this film. The glowing review made me want to see this film only to be slightly disenchanted by it. I really wanted this movie to be good because Asian American films are limited to action martial arts films, which shows the current lack of acceptance of Asian Americans as viable leading men or ladies. So, I was going into this movie with good expectations, and I found myself first questioning the writing, then the acting, and casting. The contrivance and farce needed to accept the much of the film is outside my range. At no point did I believe any of the character development points, which mostly likely has to do with the casting. Ken Leung doesn't work in my opinion because he lacks all likability and charm needed for this part. Hayden's perverse attraction to him and her baby talk performance really turned me off. Kelly Hu is beautiful and believable, but her accent was less then believable. Boy, is she one beautiful woman. Hmmmm. Anyway, I do appreciate what the screenwriter was attempting, because the story line is believable on many levels. Being an Asian American actor that doesn't do stunts is like an automatic blacklist in Hollywood. The directors lost some of the nuance of reality in many scenes, which was distracting. I guess I can forgive a lot of these little things that threw me off. By the end of the movie I do like Ken Leung, but not his performance. I'll give this movie a five for the attempt, but nothing as glowing as the previous poster.

Harry Potter and the worst movie ever!.
16 July 2007
I'm sorry, but this movie reeked of poor craftsmen ship from the start. I went in to this believing a darker take would bring new material or possibilities to the forefront, but all I kept thinking was why is nothing happening. Constant repetition of irrelevant plot points driving home that they are at a school of magic. Nothing new was created or expounded upon. I just kept thinking is something interesting going to happen. Then I remembered that the author was a hack and basically ripped off things from Tolkien, so I didn't feel so bad. I remembered that she cranked out books for profit and not artistic merit or value. The filmmakers created their own mess with erratic cutting and jumpy plot shifts. Then I checked the no-name director with unheard of credits and realized again this is all of money and the masses are ignorant enough to feed the beast. Harry Potter is the easily digestible knock off hack bus. Everyone that gets on knows no better because they are either below the age of 12 or completely uncultured and without pedigree. I found this movie completely boring and I went into believing it would be entertaining. Boy, was I wrong. What garbage.

I am just a sucker for romantic fare.
29 August 2006
Truthfully, these kinds of movies only appear once in a while, and though the cynical scoff at love, this movie pulls enough heart strings to make you actually care. I really believe more love stories need to be told, so that the jaded can believe again. Love is real. Love is powerful. Love is everything. The performances are sincere enough, and oddly, Keanu pulls it off, though a scene with his brother is slightly awkward. I believe both of them in their presentation of distant lovers. They seemed genuine even though the performances weren't ground breaking. I'm not complaining about contrived coincidence. You have to suspend disbelief in theses types of charming movies. My quixotic nature lends me wanting to believe everything they give you, and I think you will too.

The Descent (2005)

Another typical horror movie about what stirs in the darkness of inner earth.
5 August 2006
I just read a review on IMDb praising this movie, and I couldn't believe what I was reading. This run of the mill movie contains cliché after cliché, though this critic said, "still far better than most of the cliché-ridden dreck that passes for horror", so I'm thinking either someone close to the production is spooning with these critics, or I'm not sure, because this horror movie drained the plot from three similar movies that previously came out. I'm not going to jog my memory to recycle the structure or antics of the characters with in the plot, but let me tell you, nothing UNIQUE, INSPIRED, or NOTEWORTHY comes from this boring and easily produced horror flick. GO GET AN IMAGINATION--then you can be a critic that approves of garbage.
