The Rising Place (2001)
Fair Commentary on Racial Injustice
This storyline is interesting in its subject matter, but I did find that the movie moves along quite slowly and seems a bit flat in places.
Because it deals with the flavour of the south during a tumultuous time in history, I found the way the subject matter was handled to be a bit weak. Also, parts of the storyline were a bit hard to buy onto from a "realistic" perspective, especially as relates to the main character and her relationship with her family, given her situation.
All of the performances by the actors were excellent, so if there is a negative comment about the general mood of the movie, I would have to blame the director...more oomph was certainly needed in some of the scenes.
I purchased this movie because I am a fan of Laurel Holloman and aim to see all of her work eventually. As usual, her performance was nothing short of brilliant.
Overall, I would rate the movie as fair...not a bad way to spend an evening, but don't pass up the party to stay home and watch this one.
Boogie Nights (1997)
Great Movie and Launcher of Many Careers
I looove this movie. I think I've seen it about six times now and I never get tired of it. What a novel idea to make a movie about the porn industry in the 1970's. And that's exactly what is fun about it too...all the music and style of that decade are brought back in living colour. What a blast! Every time I watch this, I notice an actor that is now famous that wasn't famous the previous time I watched it...but I think I've now covered off all the main characters in the movie as they all seem to have gone on to bigger and better things; most notably, Julianne Moore, Heather Graham, Bill Macey, Tom Jane, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and of course Mark Whalberg and C. Thomas Reilley. A notable mention also to Don Cheedle who was just nominated for a Best Actor award at the 2005 Oscars. This guy is awesome and sooo cute in this movie! I definitely recommend this one...but keep in mind it is not for the easily offended as there are fictional depictions of working actors plying their trade in the world of "video" porn.
