The Mentalist (2008)
Poor Man's Sherlock Holmes
I heard dozens of high praises for this show and decided to watch it on prime.
In the end I didn't like it much. It's looks like a cheesy version of Sherlock Holmes which is one of my favorite crime shows of all time. But this show has too many lazy writing moments. First of all Patrick Jane has vague powers which is another indication for poor character development. He can apply hypnosis on the go, talk a pissed of prison mate out of anger with clichee sentences, understanding people's past from the posture or the way they walk for example he says 'your father is a football coach bc you walk like a football player'. First she doesn't walk like a football player and 2nd ppl whose father is a football coach dosn't walk like that. Also sometimes at the end of the show he mentions he solved the case from the start and waited for fun. And sometimes the show gives no explanation for his suspicions.
He doesn't look smart that way for ppl watching with attention to details, the writers just added some level of absurdity to make Jane solving the cases. He's not likable for me at all. The only ppl I like are the 3 side character detectives who are all more realistic.
But don't get me wrong this show is not a bust after all but also doesn't deserve a rating over 7. If you watch it with lower expectations you may even have a good time watching it.
The Marvels (2023)
Who is responsible for MCU Phase 4
I just want to know who is responsible for MCUs phase 4 and how he or she can still be employed
There are 0(zero) good movies and only 1 or 2 tv shows that are watchable over a total of 20 productions and this is one of the bottom ranked ones. Marvel did a fantastic job over the decade, earned trust of fans besides billions of dollars and they are wasting it like there is no tomorrow.
I don't know how a franchise can change so drastically from hero to zero.
I have watched every marvel movie out there and this is equally as bad as she-hulk.
Story is definitely boring, protagonists are boring, antagonist is boring, action is boring, battles are boring, some scenes are absurd and ridiculous.
I have absolutely nothing good to say about this movie. Don't waste your money or your time.
Looks like the movie is only made to make money in India.
Lessons in Chemistry (2023)
This looks good
First of all I want to say how good this show is and it really tied me and my wife up in front of the screen. This is one of the few shows we enjoyed watching together since Queens Gambit.
The story is really good following the life of a mentally broken chemist protege trying to overcome the difficulties of her profession as a woman pioneer in her field. I really don't know how real this stuff is this back in the day but Brie Larson is doing her job exceptionally well.
The story is very well written in layers and not primitively linear. It goes back and forth changing timeline continuosly.
The supporting cast, the story, cinematography is well delivered as most of other apple tv series.
The only thing that gives an itching to me is it completely demonizes one gender to glorify the other. Unlike this show "queens gambit" had balanced characters but in 3 episodes so far every men except the main supporting male is simply evil. I guess this is the agenda these days in tv shows.
Long story short the show is really really good and definitely a must to watch.
Oppenheimer (2023)
Looks like a badly edited documentary
It's easy to say I love it and feel safe being in the crowd but I won't do it for this Nolan movie.
First of all the actors and actresses played exceptional. The movie is swarmed with great actors of our time and they delivered it beautifully as expected.
Another positive for 'Oppenheimer' is Cinematography. Van Hoytema did an excellent job.
Story? Since Oppenheimer is a historic figure the main story is already written but it has to be adapted into a movie that would make it attractive enough to watch. Making an adaptation for the bigscreen is way harder than writing an original one. There are tons of materials failed in this quest and this one failed up that hill too.
There is not a single subject/antagonist/problem/mystery in the movie that is covered throughly as the main focus except "compartmentalization". It is like watching a documentary badly edited and excessively cut by director.
Also relations of Oppenheimer either romantic or business not delved or written beautifully. They are written shallow and portrayed as distant figures and audience doesn't develop any feelings for them.
And my 2nd concern is tension. Nolan is known for his ability to create great tension for his movies and he showed us his expertise from Dunkirk to Interstellar to Tenet. There is almost zero tension in Oppenheimer. Even the well known Nolan sound effects/ost failed to create tension for me and IMO that's why ppl find this movie boring compared to other Nolan titles.
And these two points stopped me from getting tied to story and I felt disconnected thoughout the movie.
I am not getting into ideological/moral views of the movie as there are some to critize or discuss. But it already failed even before that point.
Outlast (2023)
Fake personalities destroyed the show
First of all it was not boring, I really watched all of it without getting bored but totally annoyed with the contestants.
The reason for that is their personalities are fake as hell. I don't know if the producers wanted to spice up the show with some emotional scenes but almost all of them was fake as hell.
At one point a group of 2 heartless woman and a low moral man steals the sleeping bags of others to force them quit out of the game and they laugh while doing this. They also keep laughing while they are freezing at night but a few scenes later they cry. LOL it's clear they lack of feelings like emphaty like a true sociopath so it's not realistic for them to cry. But I get it casual ppl believe and like this so producers put these scenes into many contests these days. But this is one of the things that destroyed the realism of the show.
For another huge point that destroyed the show is physical contact looks like forbidden in confrontations. But that leads to awkward situations. Like ppl stealing your stuff in front of you and you have nothing to do. LOL very far from realism.
At the end two teams with the lowest moral values made their way to the finals and the concept of the show helped them greatly.
I was not satisfied in the end. Definitely there has to be rule changes if the show wants to be better.
National Treasure: Edge of History (2022)
Rubbish
I've watched 2 episodes and I'm done with it. This is clearly an insult to viewers by the writers of the show,
Let me give you an example from the 2nd episode
They find a treasure box with some kind of rotating dial combination lock with a total of 38 ancient symbols on it.
And there is a total combination of 520 :)
The protagonist says there must be a story within this puzzle and she assumes the story is
'sun shines down on a bunny and the bunny escapes to briar patch'
presses on symbols and the box opens in their 1st try.
3rd Episode Edit : The antagonist has the same treasure box and in 3rd episode she says "We were only looking at the box, but she(protagonist) showed us to look inside"
really??? It's a treasure box with clickable&movable symbols on it and you haven't figured out that the important stuff is inside the box????
This is how stupid the show is
What the hell?
Who is writing this piece of garbage? Have those writers ever watched the original 'National Treasure' or read any of Dan Brown novels before? Haven't you guys learned anything about making good puzzles?
And this is tv-series for gods sake. Writers have time for everything like developing a background, reasonable logical story, consistent characters. But this is obviously lazy writing. There are lots of loose ends and holes in the story.
I can't stand this abomination anymore.
I am not recommending this show to anyone except ppl with lots of free time.
Motherland: Fort Salem (2020)
That's why they do not recruit women for the army
The story and the world is interesting but for the first 5 episodes show just looks like a cheesy teenager drama.
As the show progressed we see that why they don't recruit women for army. All they want is to attend to the prom and get laid. They can yell to their superiors during their period, leave training without informing anyone and constantly cry.
Also applausing by feet is an original idea but looks very funny on real life.
But the show is not that bad. It's definitely watchable but not that great to give it 8 or higher.
American Crime Story (2016)
Kardashians wrote it I guess
I watched the first season and the series really deserved a rating over 7. Acting is good, cinematography is good, even they screened a real event in decency with a flaw, Kardashians. They are portrait as the saints in the series. Guess Robert Kardashian gave away a fortune for the series or why would the writers tried so hard to clean and separate the family from the crime after O.J put behind bars for 33 years.
Ok long story short I recommend you to watch it if you like law&justice thrillers.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019)
Wrong queen to rule Moors
I am not going to keep this review very long. Maleficent M.O.E is a fine movie in general and definitely watchable. The only thing that bothers me is Aurora is always doing wrong choices and she is not clever enough to rule the land.
She tells she knows her mother at the end of the movie but accuses her of cursing the King.
She sides with her love rather than her mother that it turns out whom she doesn't know well.
Prevent Maleficent from stopping the queen and getting her killed. After that she tries to kill the queen.
Thrown down from the tower and gets saved by maleficent again and many many more.
Oh my gosh. My IQ dropped by 10 points even by watching her scenes. Nice choice Maleficent by assigning her as the ruler of Moors. I feel pity for the ppl of Moors :(
The Coldest Game (2019)
American propaganda machine at work
The coldest game was bright at first but extinguished before the middle of the road. I love spy thrillers but I would hardly call this one a thriller. I watched coldest game after midnight and it was so uncaptivating that I fell asleep.
There was no real mystery, no tension, no brillant plot twists and nothing. The whole show was about how evil(and stupid) Russia is. Even the ending credits is using every opportunity to discredit enemy.
It's acceptable to use movies as political arsenal but at least do it in a proper and intelligent way. There are tons of movies that have accomplished this like Life is beautiful, Schindlers List, Piano and etc.
The way you represent the russian chess champion was funny. An ordinary man watching this movie would think his IQ is below 90. At least show some respect to master chess players. There is decent chess movie 'Pawn Sacrifice' that you could take as an example.
And netflix keep insulting our intelligence and doing shows/movies like this and Disney+ will swallow you like a little fish.
Long story short this movie is a complete no brainer. There are tons of tv shows and movies that would give you a better 2 hours.
Rise of Empires: Ottoman (2020)
Not detailed enough
As a history lover myself who has spent thousands of hours on reading books, watching documentaries&shows, 'Ottoman Rising' didn't satisfy me at the end.
The reason is that I have found the show covering just the surface of events and not detailing anything from strategy, characters, battles, politics of the era, previous conflicts&alliances between europe, byzantine and ottomans. The short history documentaries about the conquest of Constantinople on youtube are much more satisfactory and reflect the history in much more detail.
Also I didn't like acting a bit except for 'Emperor Constantine' and 'Prince Mehmed'. They were the only ones who acted according to events that surround their characters.
And for the last one the show tried to stay away from Turkish&Greek conflict and hold a neutral ground but that again caused unrealistic characters. That was a medieval war and rulers had to be unjust, cunning, violent and brilliant for glory. I could not see any of these characteristics especially for Mehmed the Conquerer.
But at least it was a decent try and watchable but it's far away from the perfect 10/10 score.
The Outsider (2020)
Promising start
This show is looking classy from the start.
A violent murder turns into a mysterious story which keeps the attention of the audience. Yes I know there are many movies&books that has the same topic but it's the storytelling that is making the difference. And as far as I can see from the teasers they will be able to keep the story that way. Hope they don't fail us and the writers deliver us a better ending than 'LOST' and 'Game of Thrones'.
-Story looks very good and appealing
-Cinematography is good, you can feel the depression of the ppl of town after the murder in every scene.
-Soundtrack is in harmony with the story and the scenes.
-On the contrary of other reviews I have found the acting a bit mediocre. At least the kids acted better than the adults.
Titans (2018)
At last DC got the recipe
After cheesy shows like supergirl or arrow, 'Titans' from DC really managed to surprise me.
Unlike other DC tv-shows they came up with a really good story. Mysterious from the beginning and unraveling by each episode which is a must for a good tv show. I assure you won't be getting bored watching titans.
Character developments are great and characters are lovable. Acting is realistic, scenes have the quality of a cinema movie. CGI is also above tv standards.
Nice job DC, you nailed it at last. Hope the standards of this show doesn't decline by time. I really loved it.
Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)
Light as much as it can be
IMO this is a step down from the first movie.
The previous movie had a good villain and a good background story for all characters. The focus was clear and the challenge was gripping and story was smooth.
This time the challenge for the heroes is overly distracted. There are FBI, family issues, mobs and a super villain but all of them are weak, uninteresting and not well presented. Wasp character was a great add up but not used in a smart way.
The fx is better than the first movie especially the villain ghost.
Like the first part this movie is also filled with fun elements, sometimes the jokes feel artificial and false. Overall they are laughable but you feel like you have heard it before from part I. Luis character was definitely awful.
In the end I felt like watching a light family comedy more than a superhero movie.
PS. I watched most of the marvel movies at least twice but this is not going to be one of them.
Cloak & Dagger (2018)
deep character development ruined the show
IMO over the years marvel learned how to do above average tv shows. They are good at character development and story telling. But this time they over exaggerated character and story development. It has been 5 episodes which is about 4 hours and there is still nothing exciting and interesting that can tie us to the screen.
All we see are teenagers running away from their personal issues so far.
There is 'legion' which combined both cinematic visual art, story telling and character development and very small amount of action, and there is 'dare devil' where you know your heroes well and there are lots of action.
All their success comes from balancing these elements but on the contrary cloak and dagger is unbalanced. It's so slow that bores you even if you want to enjoy it. Sorry marvel you have to speed up this one a little bit or you won't be seeing another season or any more audience.
Pros:
None
Cons:
Slow and boring
Logan (2017)
Loosy ending for a great movie
I think that nobody was expecting such a dark movie from marvel. Logan was like the dark knight of the marvel cinematic universe.
It's not a fully action packed adrenaline movie. Instead it was realistic, gory, pessimistic and post apocalyptic. You will be shocked to see such savage scenes from Marvel.
The movie shows you its dark pessimistic slow moving intentions from the first fight scene(a depressed drunk Wolverine).
The story is not great but okay. Hugh Jackman is okay, Patrick Steward plays one of his best. 'Laura' character is perfect. In my opinion much cooler than wolverine and you guess it's hard to be cooler than him.
The story gets tense towards the end. Mutant kids with super powers, wolverine, Laura and a superior genetically modified evil Wolverine. And you expect marvelous battle scenes in the end.
But unfortunately it fails to deliver such. Just kids, soldiers and wolverine running around playing tagging and slashing game.
And the emotional scenes in the end doesn't fit. Laura crying as wolverine dying calling him daddy daddy daddy. Definitely not good.
Long story short it's a good movie. I liked Logan more than other wolverine movies but it definitely deserved a much better last 15 minutes and ending.
Go and watch you won't regret it if you like Wolverine.
The Survivalist (2015)
Definitely Underrated
I was definitely not expecting such a realistic good movie when I placed myself against the TV.
The movie started real slow. Showed us some glimpses of the lead characters routine post-apocalyptic life. His life began to change when he showed some mental problems caused by his loneliness. Then the expected happens. He encounters other survivalists. Because of his loneliness he accepts their presence to his little farm with great caution.
It was interesting to watch their relationship which lacks trust. A few major twists happen that I do not want to spoil but I really liked them.
There are some boring scenes but not much. Twists are great. Not exaggerated, realistic. The script is good, consistent and doesn't have any holes.
Pros :
- Great story
- Great Acting
- Realistic
Cons :
- Low budget affected visuals. Should be much darker and lower in contrast in my opinion.
Highly recommend it if you love post-apocalyptic movies but not an action/adrenaline junkie.
PS. For the ones who think the lead male is not a survivalist, it's the younger female who owns the title.
Captain Fantastic (2016)
Close but not able touch heart
First of all I am impressed by the acting quality of Viggo Mortensen once again. But this time he is not all alone by himself. Everyone in the cast was brilliant even the youngest ones.
I was excited about this movie since I saw the trailer 6 or 7 months before the title was published. A family life in the wild is interesting but also much more challenging than many people would imagine. I always wondered what it would be like if I had to try. Seeing Mortensen in the cast and the trailer increased my expectations for this movie.
Unfortunately it didn't reach to my expectations. The movie is good undoubtedly but it was far away from being great. You always feel something is missing from the start. You just see the family life after mother passed away so you have no idea what it was before and how it changed dramatically. You just know it changed. Viggo is somehow shown as a madman. If they had shown us some brief moments with their mother the base for the movie would be more solid. The quarrels with the children would be more understandable and would make a better story.
Pros:
- Acting is great
- Visuals
Cons :
- Story (I expected a better one)
- Exaggerations ( the proposal scene and the questions at the dinner table doesn't fit to those brilliant kids and some more)
I recommend that you watch Captain Fantastic. You will like it.
For a more successful version of a father&children relations I would recommend "The Descendants (2011) with George Clooney.
Inferno (2016)
It lacks mystery and history - A bad adaptation
It has been at least 5-6 years since I read the book and I barely remember it so I thought it was going to be fun but I was wrong.
The movie is again very different from the books like the previous ones. I had great time reading 'Da Vinci Code' but the movie was a failure compared to the book. 'Angels and Demons' was a good book but surprisingly I was entertained in the movie too and I liked it. But 'Inferno' was the worst part in the sequel.
The movie adaptations are hard to script. If you follow the exact same line you will likely to fail like Inferno did. So the writers have to be good at redeveloping the story for the movie audience.
The movie cannot get you into the story and you feel like you started watching it in the second half. Okay I get that Prof. Langdon loses his memory and slowly gains his consciousness back but so is Jason Bourne from the great 'Bourne' series. So that's not an excuse.
Also and most importantly the show lacks mystery and history. We love the series because the hero is good at solving beautifully made puzzles. You won't see any of those smart moments in the movie.
After the movie I felt like wasting my time. Do not recommend it to anyone.
Van Helsing (2016)
nothing smart here
I watched the first 4 episodes and I don't think I will ever continue.
The idea is okay. It's the vampire apocalypse and the hero cannot be turned. But the problem is this idea cannot be put into a good story.
There are lots of downsides for the show. There is no connection&link between the episodes. I am not eager for the next episode. Maybe it will develop over time but it should already give us something after 4 hours. Story has no fun, no mystery, no action, no horror, no real drama. Dialogues are very artificial and bad. Acting is bad and it's obvious they are acting. Script is full of contradictions. And nothing good left to tell about the show.
Do not waste your time.
The Night Of (2016)
Good storytelling
This show got me from the first episode. A great example of storytelling for mystery, crime and drama shows.
It was slow in the beginning but after few minutes it gets exciting and tense with each second. You wonder what is next?
A naive, Pakistani, Muslim young man in NYC suspected for murder for killing a girl he just met. He looks innocent but every clue shows otherwise and he's desperate and helpless. A veteran experienced detective sure of boys crime has a strong case against him. At the end of the episode help arrives from a low cost lawyer with little hope of salvation.
Looks like another great chapter waits for us and I'm quite sure it's going to get better and better. I can't wait for the next episode.
- Pros -
Nice storytelling.
Very good acting.
Good character development.
Music fits for the drama and mystery. It gives you the feeling but you hardly notice it playing.
- Cons -
None yet.
Hardcore Henry (2015)
a new genre
First I would like to say this is nothing like I have seen before. This is a new genre. And as the pioneer of this genre it's better than I expected.
After watching the movie I really feel like I played a nonstop video game for two hours with the hardest difficulty as it doesn't give you anytime to rest.
Honestly I think this title deserves a 6 or 7 more than an eight but I would give the extra point for the courage of the director of this experimental movie and hardcore action scene, queen playing in the background near the end.
Pros : . Fun . Experimental / Maybe a new genre is created . Music . Enough blood for some gore lovers.
Cons :
. Exhausting . Acting . Too much blood for some viewers
Just give it a chance and start watching. Within the 20 minutes you will know that you can finish or quit watching.
The Expanse (2015)
Really promising
This review is only written after watching the pilot episode so don't bash me if it turns in a way not expected.
But after watching the pilot and the trailer for episode 2 this one looks huge. The story is very attractive, the acting is OK, cgi looks extremely good for a syfy TV show and the script looks well written and keeps you tied to next episode cause there are too many deeply hidden mysteries to resolve.
Also this is not just going to be an action based show but they will also add political conflicts which resembles that the show will be something like a space version of game of thrones.
But of course there are many shows that starts good but lost its way before the end of the season. But usually this happens when the writers get lazy or extend the show unnecessarily. Hope the writers of the show focus on keeping the quality and never get lazy.
Long story short this title is very promising and can be a great success as I hope.
Edit after season 2: this show has exceeded my high expectations. This is definitely a show that you cannot just miss.
Supergirl (2015)
who writes this piece of garbage
I really wanted this show to succeed or at least I wished that it entertains people that it could go on for few seasons.
But no way it's going to see season 2 or 3.
- Acting is extremely awful. Especially supergirl.
- Script is much worse than my expectations. OK I did not ask for a masterpiece but this is an insult to audience. They exploit the archenemy in episode 1 and she beats her in episode 2 and then struggles with her boss, her boss's kid, her mom, her love for the rest of the show. So how does it differ from a Brazilian soap opera?
There is no fun no entertainment no action no excitement no of anything. Unfortunately one of the worst super heroine show of all time.
Writers must be replaced to save the show. Hope it's not too late.
The Martian (2015)
Do not watch the trailer
I was curious about the title long before it made its way to theaters. Would it fail me like the interstellar did or would it be good as I expected.
Definitely it was good and I really had a good time watching it.
The good :
The script(story) is very good. It was good at keeping the audience attention from start to end and most importantly unlike interstellar it didn't have any inconsistencies in the story.
No need for great CGI effects. Many of the modern science movies need CGI to attract people. Lately CGI almost became a makeup for bad movies. The Martian didn't fall into this category. They spent more time to write a good script instead of visual effects.
Acting. Matt Damon was a star and almost everyone was above expectations except Jeff Daniels and Kate Mara.
Music. I hate disco but it's so cleverly used that it was in harmony with the scenes.
The bad :
Mars was a little bit unrealistic. At the first scene I thought they were on a training mission on earth. The gravity should be less and object should weigh less.
Trailer. Trailer gives too much clue about the movie that sometimes killed the fun and curiosity.
I highly recommend "The Martian" to anyone. I guarantee you won't be disappointed. Just don't watch the trailer before you see it.
