Fire Island (2017)
On the positive side-pointless, on the negative-dangerous
There is something seriously confusing about this show. These guys go to one of the gay heavens and all they do is talk about their boyfriends, trying to "fit in" society, judging people for having fun and being free, and trying to connect with their families. If you want to do any of those things probably you should do them the rest of the year. That way there would be no need to go to a place where people try to escape all the pressure of all that mentioned already just to deal with the same issues. Furthermore I doubt anybody would want to go to Fire Island to fight with his roommates. All of that made it very hard for me to find a good point in the mere existing of this show other than seeing a bunch of good-looking guys hanging in Speedos (apparently a very controversial topic).
I always thought Americans gay guys are more tame and family-oriented than Europeans at least on the outside. However, a show about summer, freedom and vacation being turned into very cheap to the point of fake drama is actually dangerous. I would give up hope forever to being able to go to a drama safe place in this world if I were to listen to those guys. Please, enjoy your summer vacation and try to stay positive, drama free and relax!
L'inconnu du lac (2013)
Intelligent thriller
My first impression of movie was that it is rather slow and very "French" in a sense. However, the story builds up very well and the thrilling feeling gets stronger throughout the whole movie. Some of the scenes and dialogues seem quite eerie, but I think there is something very important behind this movie which is quite subtly shown. The plot can be seen as a summary (or a metaphor) of the whole gay-life. Almost every scene in the movie can be easily matched to situations that regular gay guy bumps into on a daily basis: meeting a weird friend, unclear sexuality, fighting with one owns insecurity, seeing a guy in a relationship who you like, fight between only sex and love, safe-sex issues. The thrilling point can be easily matched to violence against LGBT people. It is always there, it is present and it is not extinct even among gay people themselves.
In conclusion, highly recommended great movie, thrilling and touching, intelligent and subtle.
Looking (2014)
Big disappointment
After "Game of Thrones" and "Girls" and being a proud gay man I was impatient to see "Looking" as I expected quality TV production from HBO. Obviously I was not the only one around as in my hometown Stockholm, Sweden, the biggest gay community organized a public premiere party for it.
After the second episode the only feeling I got about this series is pity for its screenwriters and resent for most of the characters. The main character, a gay male approaching 30 living in a big gay- friendly city (just like me) acts like a shy 13 y.o. coming out kid. The character acts awkward on every occasion - dating, cruising, moving, that it brings nothing but a pity and feeling of resent. When watching a movie or a series, one should like some of the characters or at least find them interesting. Not the case with this guy. Unfortunately, his friends do not help the series either. The couple moving in together do not feel genuine. Cuddling in the morning and proposing just like out of a sudden to move in together... sorry, those things DO NOT work this way as soon as you are 18 y.o. The whole second episode they were fighting over putting a picture on a certain place. That was the most interesting that happened to them for one episode. The level of naivety and bore skyrocket with every scene those guys appear.
The only character that was not pathetic was Tom of Finland (no way to know any of the guys names as they are easily forgettable). Hot DILF as an actor is always a good start. Then some story with an ex that is building up - good.
I would not recommend this series to nobody - it is just not the real- life story it pretends to be. Even if somebody wants to believe this is the reality I think there are much more interesting and compelling stories than this teen-naivety. Despite good acting, the storyline is very poor and characters are just not worth watching.
