All Forgotten (2001)
A Beautiful Film
In a world where so many films deal with chases and 'big bangs' this film is just beautiful and a welcome change. It is beautifully shot with some of the finest acting i have seen in a long while, but then what else would you expect from a this cast list? Kirsten Dunst is really very good as Zinida, and intriguing. However for me the finest performances come from the supporting cast, Julie Walters is as ever spot on, and Geraldine James is (as ever) fantastic as the wronged wife and protective mother, the scene where she confronts her husband (another brilliant performance from Nathaniel Parker) is one of the best acted scenes i have ever seen on film. True the story can at times be complex, but it is captivating and after watching it several times the more complex aspects become clearer. It could be said to be intelligent viewing - we're not just sponge fed everything there and then - and thats a welcome change too! A film where you may be required to think - it won't exactly kill you! Well worth watching, and whether you like it or not you do have to give credit where credit is due to the cinematography and acting in particular.
Miss Potter (2006)
An interesting feel-good film
This is genuinely one of the best films i have seen for a long time. It is superbly acted all round, and makes brilliant use of the locations really allowing the viewer to understand and appreciate the beauty of the Lake District. Ordinarily i would have been more sceptical of the casting of an American actress in a role such as Beatrix Potter. However, Renee Zellweger is such a good actress and embraces this role so well that i have no qualms in this area here, although i did read one comment which said Emily Watson (Millie) would have made a better Beatrix - and am in complete agreement that she too would have been wonderful ( i mean aren't there enough British actresses to go round?!), but as i say i couldn't fault Renee Zellweger either. One thing that was nice to see was a good British supporting cast, not one of whom put a foot wrong. The story was brilliantly scripted too, with a good blend of fact, fiction, innocence, romance and fantasy touches. The film just really left me smiling - its a great reminder of what we go to the cinema for.
The Phantom of the Opera (2004)
truly amazing!
This film is in a class of its own. The sets, the acting, the direction, the costumes, the make - up - not to mention the fabulous music which totally takes your breath away and is delivered with such feeling. Emmy Rossum shines as Christine and could have been made for the role. Gerard Butler is an amazing Phantom, and plays his character with much passion - you as the audience can't help but be taken under his spell. Patrick Wilson makes a great Raoul and i love the sword fight in the cemetery between him and the Phantom. Masquerade is also brilliantly done. The supporting cast are outstanding, Miranda Richardson as ever gives an amazing performance as only she can, as Madame Giry, and her French accent is outstanding, as is her singing! Simon Callow and Cieran Hindes give great performances as the two theatre managers, throwing in some light comedy. Jennifer Ellison is also very good as Meg Giry. Not to mention Minnie Driver as Carlotta - an amazing Italian accent she is fantastic although she doesn't actually do the soprano singing, however she does sing 'Learn To Be Lonely' the beautiful new song featured on the end credits, (nom. for a golden globe and Oscar). The effects in the film are also outstanding. This film is outstanding, a great achievement in cinema history!
The Prisoner of Zenda (1952)
An amazing - beautiful film!
This films is fantastic. It has everything you could possibly wish for, romance, action, adventure, comedy + what really matters is superb acting, especially from Steward Granger (Rudolph Rassendill + King Rudolph) Deborah Kerr (Princess Flavia) and James Mason (Rupert of Hentsau) it is a classic of its time and the more i watch it the more it grows on me. Amazing and beautiful...well worth watching! Considering that it is 53 years old you really wouldn't think it, it captures the period and Anthony Hope's novel fantastically. And if you are anything like me then you will cry (or want to) in certain areas - its is so believabe and Deborah Kerr and Stewart Granger - make the best couple - the romance just mealts you! But then if thats not your sort of thing - there's plenty of sword fights and action too. An all round great film.
