Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver (2024)
Is this for real?
Oh boy...it felt like a 2 hour long meme.
Rare is the clumsiness of this movie, the basic concept of story telling seems to be foreign to mr Snyder. Saying "this is what my personality is" does not count as character development. Exposition through a daisy chain of flashbacks does not mean you're following the golden rule of "show, don't tell".
If farming in slow motion and vomit inducing "cinematography" is your thing, you're in for a blast.
To give credit where credits is due...some of the actors tried very hard to have fun with the material, but this is beyond salvation. For a quirky alternative to star wars watch Krull instead.
If this is a dream project for Snyder, call Freddy Krueger.
Sky Sharks (2020)
Objectively bad, but great fun!
We can talk all day about the bad writing, the overabundance of cgi, the amateurish acting etc etc....but this is a self aware silly movie, and it's not as lazy as many of the asylum flicks in the same ball-park. All the opposite, actually, maybe they tried too hard to jam as many "cool" scenes as possible in between boring and badly acted "plot"- progressing scenes: as a result the pacing could have been a lot better. Only for the true fans of B Movies.
It's really really bad, but in a good way.
PROS: lots of gore, boobs, sharks and zombie-nazis
CONS: bad acting, bad writing, it drags a lot in between action scenes
After Midnight (2019)
Don't expect an horror movie
This is not an horror movie, in the slightest. It's a quite competent and heart warming romantic drama, acted pretty nicely and with some enjoyable dialogues. The monster it's just an inconvenient distraction from the real story, and I think that this will make a lot of the audience bored or disappointed, but this movie is not bad at all. The ending feels quite rushed, and there is no clear explanation about the nature or the agenda of the creature (which is cool but you literally see it 2 times in the whole show), and I see how this could bother the average viewer looking for mindless monster action with no stones left unturned.
We're in Sundance territory, don't expect Sci-fi or Troma. It kinda reminded me of the nice romantic horror Spring, which had the same tag line "love is the monster".
If your loved one is not into horror movies and you are a fanatic of indie creature features, this could be one movie to watch together and make both kinda disappointed, but you won't waste your time as many reviews are saying.
The Ninth Passenger (2018)
Poorly executed creature feature
*Mild spoilers here and there*
For the first time I must agree with the overall rating of this movie on iMDb. I usually am more generous with super low budget creature features, because it's kind of my guilty pleasure, but here the money is not excuse. The characters are hideous, poorly written and dumb af. You literally cannot wait for everybody to bite the dust since the camera starts rolling, and you'll have to wait waaaaaaay too long before it happens, usually offscreen though. The plot is the same old one filled with horny teenagers, horny middle aged people, and evil soldiers working for a multi billionaire corporation, trying to cover up their experiments. And then things go sour.
The cinematography is not that bad, is directed in a way that sometimes is a little bit more than ok, there are some nice shots drenched in magenta before the final climax. The creature effects are bad-ish but you can't really tell since the monsters are always or out of focus while being derpy and slow in the background or framed for mere seconds in a frantic kill frenzy. No gore candy in here, they probably finished up the money renting the boat.
It's not so bad it's good, it's just bad, you might enjoy it more with your buddies cracking' up some beers, but this is not a good movie, and I wanted to like it more trust me, I'm a sucker for practical effects and clever ways to hide the low budget. But here something didn't work.
Child's Play (2019)
A lot better than I expected
Warning: minor spoilers ahead
I went into this movie with basically no hope of amusement, and I must say sometimes is better to have lower expectations. The origin story of Chucky is quite different from the 80's original franchise, probably to fit better on today's horror standards; hardcore fans might be really disappointed, but I have never been too much of a sucker for Chucky myself, so I was really pleased to see how they managed to sort it out in a more hi-tech way. Probably not the most original anti-corporate plot, but still a truly fun ride of a movie, the pacing is never slow, the one liners land pretty well most of the time, and the characters are at least decent. I personally found pleasing the unexpected friendship between the kid and the doll. Not a masterpiece, but if you are willing to ride on the 80's nostalgia, take your chance with this one.
Ps: my only very big negative goes to the doll design. Not good at all.
