Horse Girl (2020)
A Brilliant Preview Into the Mind of Psychosis
I loved it.
A mental health film for the new decade. Horse Girl goes further than the aspect of insanity but instead dives further into a notion of surrealism and through the mind of psychosis. It's not an artistic masterpiece or Oscar contender-but its brilliant in its own way.
This film is trippy, be prepared. You will feel things. You feel the fear and paranoia of Sarah, you really do. You feel claustrophobic and anxious and many other spiralling emotions that Sarah is harnessing. That's what film is supposed to do.
I am a bit upset that this was released so early in the year; meaning it will likely get ignored during award season. Maybe a Gotham award nomination for Alison Brie could still happen. Who knows?
And also, um, can we just get Alison Brie to be in a bit more of everything?

Kynodontas (2009)
Slow but extremely effective
Dogtooth is probably one of the most original films I've ever seen. It is almost deemed a fact to say there is no film like it
It is a film that makes you think a large deal about what you've just witnessed and how the content reflects on modern society today.
There are many questions still hanging in your mind when the closing credits begin. Firstly, you wonder why these parents went to such an extreme for their children or how, with the father knowing of the outside world, condemns the strange behavior the siblings learn to adopt to. Your questions will hang off the paper.
Dogtooth is a haunting and thought-provoking portrayal of what lack of knowledge and ignorance does to the human mind and how it impacts someone completely locked away from the outside world. Perhaps there are thousands of people in North Korea asking each other if their dogtooths look loose?
Although the film is very slow and lacks the excitement of Lanthimos' other films like The Lobster and The Favourite, I recommend Dogtooth for the experience and for aspiring filmmakers who would like to the film and it's style.
Princess (2014)
Beautiful yet intense film
I was drawn to 'Princess' after seeing Shira Haas'(Adar) performance in 'The Zookeeper's Wife' as a young Holocaust victim. I see it as an achievement when an actor's performance creates enough emotion and control over you that you want to see their other performances. The film blew me away for many reasons, and Haas was only one of the reasons.
The film focuses on the 12-year-old protagonist Adar, a gifted young girl who prefers to hide the potential she holds. At home, she faces an abnormal reality. Her narcissistic mother, Alma(Keren Mor) is barely home and her uncanny boyfriend, Michael (Ori Pfeffer) is always around since being fired from his job. The atmosphere of their home is sexual with her parental figures making out in the kitchen and her and Michael playing forbidden games. In attempt to escape her harsh reality, Adar finds a dream-like boy who bears a striking resemblance to her to help support her. Only for a seeping scent of darkness to break her fantasy to pieces.
With extravagant and brave performances and the glimpse of the director's talent shining in the film, Princess is a milestone for the Israeli film industry. The movie does not give away any predictable clues or ideas of how Adar's life will wound up by the time she leaves our view and the screen blinks to darkness. Haas is remarkable as Adar and delivers a true and realistic performance of a young person drowning in a sour liquid called madness.Mor is great as her selfish mother who is almost successful at stealing Haas' spotlight.
Tali-Shalom Ezer has created a film not only for entertainment but as a warning sign of what happens in the minds of young children or adolescents when they are struck with abuse and neglect. Her film is a piece of art on her country's wall that should be cherished and shown upon her whole nation. The cinematography is beautiful, the screenplay is superb and the atmosphere is ominous.
Despite my compliment for the film,I do wish more happened in the film since there was sometimes a feeling of emptiness and a craving for more as the reel played.
Princess receives 9/10 stars
Touched with Fire (2015)
Potential of a powerful story wasted
Touched with Fire was a whirlwind of a film to watch. Although it had its brief moments that pumped its audience with adrenaline, the story dragged for the rest of the show time.
The film centers around two writers suffering from an episode of the condition they both share: bipolar disorder. They meet as patients in the psych hospital they are being treated at. Carla is a mysterious and quiet poet who is tricked into committing herself into the hospital by her psychiatrist. Marco- a rebellious songwriter- is committed against his will after a night of mania and foolish acts. As the two attempt to accept their treatment, they grow a bond that widens their hearts but threatens their mental health.
The performances was probably one of the aspects of the film that boosted the film's quality, but Katie Holmes acts more like she is high on drug which has the purpose to release you of stress rather than a sufferer of bipolar. Although many praised her performance in the feature, I found it lifeless and tedious. Luke Kirby shines as Marco and portrays both the aggressive and humane aspects of his character. His performance brought out the accurate feelings, sorrows and artistic abilities of a bipolar sufferer.
One of my problems with the film was that the plot was disorganized and many events that occurred didn't seem to match the puzzle of the story. There was certain repetition of each event and many 'Romeo and Juliet' moments. These moments included the parents of both characters telling them they couldn't be together, them running away , being found and the cycle occurring a few more times.
Despite the disorganized plot, Touched With Fire does display bipolar disorder to a superb degree. The characters are written accurately and aren't displayed by any false stereotypical means.
Touched with Fire is worth watching due to the important message it spreads about an illness everyone thinks they know-but they really don't.
7 out of 10 stars.
God Help the Girl (2014)
Absolutely Delightful
God Help the Girl is a indie movie that displays songs from Scottish indie group , God Help The Girl. With a strong lead, Emily Browning charms us with her soothing voice. You have to admit as you watch the film that you want to dance and sing along to the fantastic songs. The film displays a indie vibe and the lovely feeling you earn from the movie. Olly Alexander and Hannah Murray are not shoved to the side and display their talents and play bigger roles rather than just supporting roles. We learn about friendship and love, as well as the pain Eve shows in the songs she writes.
Definitely Recommend it.
Gone Girl (2014)
A suspenseful thriller that shows the mind of a psychopath
'Gone Girl' shows us the deathly , hidden part behind married couple, Amy and Nick Dunne's deadly relationship. After a fight, Amy disappears on the Dunne's anniversary. That's when the community begin to question Nick, whether Nick is a monster. But secretly, Amy has a whole plan, and she's ready for revenge.
With Gone Girl, I was at the edge of my seat, shocked of how gruesome and terrifying Amy's plan was. I tried to figure out the hell she came up with such a plan.
If you're in for a thriller, shock and some blood along with it, watch Gone Girl
Man Up (2015)
Lake Bell and Simon Pegg shine together and build chemistry.
I watched 'Man Up' on a plane. My eyes moved to the title when I saw that Lake Bell starred in this picture , Lake Bell being one of my favorite actresses, after all. I had watched her in 'In a World...' which I also claim to be one of my favorite films. So, I watched the movie. I thought Bell was fantastic, as usual. Especially her British accent, I was tempted to go check her IMDb profile again to see if she was actually British! I then checked to see she is a native of the great New York. But I swear, most believable accent I have ever heard. Bloody brilliant! I loved the relationship built between Nancy and Jack and how they Nancy stuck up for him at the points when he needed it. This is a must-see!
Juno (2007)
A unusual and unique teenage girl unexpectedly falls pregnant.
I have wanted to watch Juno forever, but I never got the chance to. I was six years old when the picture came out I remember looking at the poster and thinking, 'that looks like a strange movie!' But, as a fourteen year old film buff, I decided to rent the movie from my local DVD store. I became zoned into the film, soon noticing Juno's original and unique personality and her fantastic mind. I laughed, I was brought in and I enjoyed this film and even showed my favorite scene to my family. My favorite scene was when Juno was talking to Su-Chin about taking too many behavioral medications. As I have said that this review has no spoilers, I won't tell you the whole joke behind it, I'll let you figure it out. Ellen Page was brilliant, bringing out the personality of Juno, a very rare performance.
Do yourself a favor, watch Juno'!
