The Trigger Effect (1996)
A good flick if you've just had a lenghty power outage
The reason why I purchased this movie was because last year we had a power outage that lasted 2+ days for us. Some people in our area didn't have power for almost a week. I heard about the movie from a friend of mine that suggested it due to the event that we experienced. Due to us getting the movie shortly after the experience, I found it to be very entertaining and very close to what could happen to "civil" people if they were hit with such a situation for an extended period of time. It hit close to home for me and made me think about how dependent we our of good ole fashion electricity. If you want to see a movie that will give you a slice of what could happen when the power goes out then you will definitely want to see this film. Just think if your city goes without power. You then have no TV, you can't use your debit card, you have no heat or air conditioning depending on the season, no computer, no light at night, and that's just the beginning. When we had our outage we could at least get in the car and go to the mall and have lunch or whatever but if the WHOLE city goes down for a significant amount of time, then there's definitely going to be trouble on the way. And that's what this movie is basically about. Good, entertaining, and recommended for all...
Nomads (1986)
More thriller than horror
I remember this movie from when I was a teen in high school. I thought I had remembered the plot but was quite wrong when I started to watch this with a friend on a Saturday night. Being the 80's horror fanatic that I am, I figured this would be a good addition to my collection. And I must say WOW!!! WHAT A TREAT!!! This movie grabbed my attention from the get go. It was set up very well and the character development made me care for the doctor that was going through this "experience". The story moves along fairly well and keeps you curious about what is going to happen next. The editing between Pierce Brosnan's character and the doctors is done cleverly as well. It's not so much a horror movie but the trailer, if you watch it, promotes it as such. It's more a thriller than a horror flick. Still... I must say that I wasn't disappointed with it and was entertained from beginning to end.
Bloodmoon (1990)
Only for completest of the genre
Basically this is a horror movie done Australian style. I can tell you it doesn't add up to Wolf Creek. It's your basic whodunit serial killer type story. There's naked Australian girls and an average, run of the mill storyline as well. I would recommend this only to completest of the genre. I give it a 4 which is high. I guess the naked Australian girls is what made me take it up a few notches... Since I'm a collector of 80s horror movies I ended up having to give this a viddie. Not that I regret it or anything but I don't see myself pulling this one off the shelf again anytime soon. But still not all that bad for a one time view...
Tales from the Crypt (1989)
Ahh the memories
The reason for my love with the TFTC series is the fact that I grew up watching these for the years that it was on. I remember looking forward to them each week and mainly was concerned with how the Crypt Keeper was going to set up the story as well as his zany comments at the end of the show. Another attraction to having these, is the stars that they had casted for the episodes. It seems that they cast the right people for the right part. I even thought that Brooke Shields did a great job in a role that was not anything like the typical "Blue Lagoon" "Endless Love" type parts that she had played before. If you're not a fan of these, you might not appreciate it as much as someone who grew up watching them. Although each of the stories are a bit unique in there own way and there is enough dark humor to keep even the most hardcore horror fan entertained for the half hour presentations. There are even a couple of them that will give you the willies as the story unfolds.
In conclusion... I would recommend this series to anyone who grew up watching these or anyone who is a fan of the B-Grade horror movies of the 80's. If you're neither of these then you probably would just watch a few of them from time to time without any real feeling about them either way. They are fun for a Friday night with a few buddies though and you do get a lot of episodes with one purchase. There are 5 seasons on sale and I truly do love them all.....
Of Unknown Origin (1983)
Man vs. Beast
I had vaguely remembered seeing this movie when it came out years and years ago. I remembered that I enjoyed it so decided to get a copy of it thinking that it probably wouldn't live up to the my expectations. Boy was I wrong..... This movie holds up today as well, if not better, than it did all those years ago. I don't want to get into the story too much other than to say that it's MAN VS. BEAST. And boy what a battle it is. As I was watching the movie I realized that I hadn't remembered much of the movie since it had been so long since I had seen it. This made it even better because I had no idea what was to come next.
If you're a fan of horror and I mean good horror that doesn't have a lot of gore yet delivers with suspense. Then this is for you. Believe me you won't be disappointed.
Maximum Overdrive (1986)
An entertaining little flick
Wow this movie just takes off with no hesitation. It had just enough character development to keep you caring for the humans against the machines. I especially was rooting for the kid that knew the Morse code. Hoping that he would stay alive. When the kids get killed on the baseball team and the kid I like gets away I was hoping nothing would happen to him more than anyone else. When kids get killed in horror films you immediately have a cult classic and this movie didn't hold a lot back. I also liked that the machines didn't have much to say except for "Give us gas" and "We're in charge". And for the horror fans there's just enough gore for ya.
