Red Oaks (2014)
This is good.
I like it.
It's good, it's heartfelt, it reminds you of an "easier" time. ( whatever that may be, decide for yourself) but it does. I'm not a country club guy. Hell I'm not even American. But this show is good. It doesn't try to be groundbreaking. We've all seen it. But for me it does get the 80s vibe more than for example stranger things. Different tone of show, sure. But still.
It's a 80s fantasy. But it's well made.
I smile while watching it. Good Cast, good production design, nice overall feeling.
2. second season is way more serious and not as comedic, but that conversion to a more serious approach does work really well.
Not bad at all.
Westworld (2016)
We're not in Westworld anymore. Season 3 review.
First season is one of the best seasons ever in tv.
Broken record. We all know.
Second was a bit disappointing to be honest, but that's a different topic.
I read critics concerning the third season and was worried it will spiral even more down.
Not for me. I found the way they took paid off. If you miss the whole "themepark" storyline I understand that you miss something. We're not in Westworld anymore, but I like it.
It's less philosophical as a lot is already discussed, but it has still enough depth. And more action, which I don't mind. Maybe a bit much. Great choreography.
I like the cyberpunk approach and the technical aspects outside of the theme park.
It reminds me a bit of early Mr. Robot which I don't mind either.
What I didn't like is the whole Caleb sub-plot. It felt forced for me. Dolores didn't really need him. I didn't care for his story...well
You see how it turns out.
I liked the Terminator/John Connor vibe between them though
But that's just me.
The Finale was a bit silly but I don't get the bad rating. Just because it's not ultra-meta and complicated timeline mindbenders doesn't mean it's bad. That stands for the whole season I guess.
I was worried but I liked it and look forward to a fourth.
Ed Harris is awesome in every season. Emmy worthy even.
Season 1: 10
Season 2: 8
Season 3: 8,5.
Devs (2020)
Why this "Lead".
Wether the show is your cup of tea or not doesn't matter when it comes to the supposed lead character.
I just couldn't find myself sympathize with her. The reason for that might be that her acting is just plain bad.
One could argue that her stiffness oder sadness is a part of the story but I find it just soooo annoying to watch.
The cast in general is great and acts great.
For example in episode six there is conversation between Katie and Lily which makes me cringe just thinking about it. Alison Pill is great but Sonoya Mizuno is just not up for it. I'm sorry.
She ruined the show a bit for me.
Not a good casting choice.
I could talk about the philosophical approach this show has but I rather do that with friends I can argue with what the show is really about.
If you like Alex Garland you will like this too.
Great show, miscast lead.
The Final Table (2018)
Why those Judges...Why
I won't go to deep into the whole show. I like food.
Novelle cuisine or street food. Doesn't matter.
What bothers me most about the show is that the jury are people who have nothing to do with food except one food critique. Still no chef involved. The chefs in the show are top notch chefs with awards and reputations. They participate in one of the biggest cooking shows ever, and the get criticized by models, singers, actors...WHAT.
I found that for the most part they had no culinary sense. That's fine but a bit misplaced in a show like that. They decide who gets to go to the next round and who has to cook for high class chef. The arrangement didn't do it for me.
I watched it cause i liked what those chefs do. Definitely culinary art. I personally didn't like the decision making process. At all.
Once Upon a Time (2011)
What a trainwreck
I am speechless. I got into this mess because my girlfriend started watching it. Something trashy you don't need to think while watching it. So we sat down and started this show. In general the idea is far fetched but if you have some sort of imagination you can get something out of it. So was my thinking. I am an open minded guy when it comes to TV shows, and it doesn't always have to be that ambitious like breaking bad or other quality shows to have fun while watching it. BUT THIS is unacceptable. The dialogues, which are poorly written are executed in the same matter. The cgi is unbearable. For a magic/fantasy themed show the scenes which take place in the magic universe are so cheap and done without any love for details. It's a disgrace for any fans of classic fairy tales. It's ridiculous how they manage to introduce new characters into the show. From Disney to brothers Grimm to...whatever. Just pick one. It's so stupid. Not that stupid can't be fun. But it's just done very poorly. You can't relate to any of the main characters. The only thing that stands out is Robert Carlyle as rumple stiltskin. I don't know why he is in this show. great actor. Well. We still watch it and make fun of it while doing so. Pointing out all the inconsistencies and idiotic plots and cheap effects. But seriously...what a trainwreck.
Deadwood: Amateur Night (2006)
One of the best...minor spoilers
Just a quick review on this one. Seeing Al not knowing what to do, Hurst slowly taking over the camp, Cy slowly losing more and more power, Jane and Jonie connecting and Bullock being loyal to the newly arrived Earp boys is a delight and one of my favorite Episodes. The ending scene with Al singing alone in the Gem just make this one. I know its nearly coming to an end, and this makes me sad because i really liked that show seeing it the first time at 2014 and not being a western fan. As always i find Timothy Olifant extremely...stiff, shall we say, but even he could convince me this time. Seeing Al alias Ian Mcshane not knowing what to do kills me, but gives a new perspective on his character as well.
Deadwood: Suffer the Little Children (2004)
Great Episode ++Spoiler++ 9 out of 10
I totally don't see why there isn't' a review on this episode, even ten years later after it came out.
It's only got a 7,7 rating which i can't understand. There is some great Character Development going on. Especially with Al. From scrubbing the floor to getting slapped by Trixie. His three dimensional Character gets a bit more explained, shall we say. And even if he is a tough son of a bitch. You just gotta love The role. One of the best TV characters of all time. One league with Walter White. As always Ian Mcshane kills it with his performance. Kristen Bells appearance ends with this one and you can see why Cy, the owner of the Bella Union opposite Al's place is a real though unsympathetic Piece of S##t. Further there is quite a comic relief in this one. Conversation with the Doctor and A.W. Merrick, the Newspaper dude is brilliant. Timothy Olyphant as Bullock, as always seems a little stiff in his performance. See for yourself. For me it's a definite 9 out of ten.
