Helluva Boss: Spring Broken (2021)
It's not great, but still a really funny and enjoyable episode overall
So far, Vivziepop's been on a roll with pumping out Helluva Boss that ranged from good to great. Up at this point, the show's second episode "Loo Loo Land" really surprised with how mature and emotional it was, while keeping up with a fantastic story, great music, hilarious comedy and a lotta character development for Stolas and Octavia. to this day, i genuinely think "Loo Loo Land" is the best episode.
And yesterday, on January 31, Vivzie finally dropped the show's third episode titled "Spring Broken", and how was it? ....good. it was a pretty good episode. BUT, it's not a great one.
Let me start with the things i liked. First of all, Verosika and her gang turned out to be a lot more engaging than i thought, 'cause when they first showed up, i didn't know what think. Verosika came off as too bland for me to care AT FIRST. but then, the more i learned about her past with Blitzo, the more she grew on me, and i'm interested in seeing where they'll go with her character in the future.
Next off, we got the episode's comedy, which i think is one of its biggest highlights. When it comes to comedy, this was one of the funnier episodes in the show, with solid jokes, witty character interactions, lots of roasting and one of the most hilarious 4th wall jokes i've seen in a long time. Also, drunk Moxxie had me in stitches (and his relationship with Millie just keeps getting better).
But probably my favorite thing about the episode is Loona. it really took me off-guard at how much screentime they gave her here. We get to see a more vulnerable and more adorable side to her as she falls in love with Vortex, and their scenes together were so adorably awkward, i couldn't help but smile. We also get to know a bit more about her backstory of how she became Blitzo's adopted daughter (....when she was almost 18, apparently), and the scene where she almost called him "dad" was so wholesome, i loved it. It was kinda heart-wrenching when she found out Vortex already has a girlfriend. Seriously, her little whimper was enough to break me. My poor baby girl. Hopefully she'll get her chance soon.
There's also a pretty kick-ass final battle with a sea monster that gives Millie a chance to a real bad-ass. It was really satisfying to watch.
Unfortunately, i'm gonna have to talk about the things that stop this episode from being a great one, and even with all the good stuff i just mentioned, i'm still gonna blame the script here. Its biggest problem has to be the story. Even if Vivzie and Brandon meant this as a joke, the story still can't help but ring hollow and not as engaging as it should've been. The whole thing revolves around ONE joke: Verosicka and Blitzo fighting over who gets to park their car in an empty parking lot space. That's it. Even with all its subplots, it still doesn't feel like the story goes anywhere and because of this, the plot doesn't have that much substance to it. It's just about a comically petty feud and that's it. Not gonna lie, i was expecting better from Vivzie here. And as much as i enjoyed Vortex's scenes with Loona, he's kinda bland as a character (just like the rest of the gang, excluding Verosicka).
But with all that being said, i still enjoyed "Spring Broken". i might be the weakest episode of the show so far, but thankfully it's not bad, and i can see myself coming back to this one when i'm really bored. Let's just hope the next episode has a stronger script/story.
My Little Pony: Equestria Girls - Holidays Unwrapped (2019)
This can't be the end of EqG. You can't just end it like this, Hasbro!
Are you kidding me, Hasbro? THIS is how you decided to end the Equestria Girls franchise? what am i even saying? this ain't a finale. it's just a bunch of unrelated shorts strung together in the form of a TV special, and none of these shorts have any kinda closure at all.
now, i'm not saying this was bad or anything. it's definitely not the worst thing to come outta EqG (Spring Breakdown holds that title), but for what we got... it feels pointless. it doesn't have any semblance of a plot - 'cause again, it's made out of 6 random holiday-themed shorts that have nothing to do with one another - most of the comedy is pretty weak and calling this the "finale" of Equestria Girls is... honestly, kind of insulting.
outta the 6 shorts we got in this special, i only enjoyed 2 of them: the one with the snowball fight (which also happens to be the funniest one), and the one with the girls planning heists. the other shorts range are either bland, generic or just down-right boring.
i really hope Hasbro changes their minds somewhere down the road and gives EqG the real ending it deserves, 'cause it legitimately can't end like this. the franchise needs to - AT LEAST - have SOME kinda actual closure. but until that day comes (mind you, if it ever does), we're stuck with this thing. i'm giving it a 4/10 because of the two shorts i really enjoyed, but other than that, there's really no reason to come back to this special again.
Alpha and Omega 2: A Howl-iday Adventure (2013)
only 2 words: fantastic sequel!
i loved "Alpha and Omega"! i don't care if it was slammed by critics, in fact every bad review makes me like it even more. it was 90 minutes of pure entertainment and in my book, it's 1 of the best movies ever made! now, ever since Alpha and Omega 1 came out in theaters, from 2010 we were promised a sequel to it. and right there, i was like "Is that real?" finally, it's out cause after 3 long years of waiting, i almost lost hope. "Alpha and Omega 2: A Howl-iday Adventure" is finally here and i'm so happy! so, "Alpha and Omega 2" takes place almost 2 years after the first movie left off. Kate and Humphrey/Garth and Lilly are married, both packs are living in peace and Kate and Humphrey got 3 adorable little puppies who're gonna make your heart melt. i love those kids, really cute! so, everybody's happy, they're getting ready for the winter holidays and it's all good, but something goes wrong. Runt, the smallest puppy goes missing, and now it's up to Kate, Humphrey and the rest to find little Runt and get him back home before the snow blocks their way, and they realize no matter where they are "Home is where the family is". and now, i get to watch and review the fantastic sequel everybody's been raging about.
so, "Alpha and Omega 2": yeah, it definitely was good and it was also great! it had some of the most emotional and heart warming moments i seen all year. the characters from the first movie that we all loved, they're back in the sequel and they're better. there's also new side characters and they were awesome, specially the puppies. they were just so adorable! and Garth and Lilly are in it too! i loved seeing em again. Lilly used to be this really beautiful but shy Omega girl. now she's all hardcore, she's more relevant and she's still gorgeous. Kate still remains the hottest girl in the movie. she was ridiculously hot in the movie, and she still knows how to throw down. i feel like Humphrey, to be honest.
the script's better, the lines are smarter, and the voice acting's really good too. usually, whenever a sequel got a cast of unknown American voice actors, it usually sucks balls. not "Alpha and Omega 2". in "Alpha and Omega 2", these actors all know how to act and they sound almost exactly alike with the original cast. sequels don't usually pull that off, but "Alpha and Omega 2" did, and it pulled it off perfectly! big props to all the actors. Marcel and Paddy are back and they're not annoying anymore, they're actually where most of the movie's comedy came from. they do a lot more this time, they're funnier, they're friendlier, i didn't mind them being in the sequel, cause it made me happy to see em again. yea, okay some of the animation in the movie had problems and it need a bit more work, but "Alpha and Omega 2" got some of the best visuals i seen in a long time. everything's bright, detailed and beautiful. the only bummer is that it's way too short, it clocks at only 50 minutes. that kinda bummed me out a little bit cause i was expecting it to be at least the same length as the first movie. but no, it's only 50 minutes and it kinda makes wonder why that short.
despite all that, "Alpha and Omega 2" was perfect in every other way. it was smart, it was cute, it was funny and exciting, i was cheering for everybody the whole time, every single character had more depth and layers... what's not to like here? if you still haven't seen it, go watch it. the best sequel of 2013! (along with "Star Trek: Into Darkness") a perfect 10/10!
