Civil War (2024)
Annoying
Great idea. Bad film. I was annoyed. See if you agree with me? Dunst did fine, but a better script & casting choices would've helped her. Cailee Spaeny ("Jesse") did great with what she was given. But these are supposed to be seasoned wartime journalists. There's no time for emotions. They should've been in their "zone" as near-animatronic hunters of digital pathos while gnarly chaos unfolds before their lenses. Think:"The Year of Living Dangerously." But instead of chasing Pulitzer moments, these heroes lost my respect that I really wsnted to give them. Instead, being tripped-up by inner torments and wistful moments--like trying on a girly dress in a quaint smalltown dress shop they stumble upon. Grrr. And I just don't like these lazy plots that betray reality, like-- we all know POTUS is whisked away to a secret bunker the hint national security's in serious jeopardy. The photogs would be using digital cameras on burst mode-not film cameras using 36-exposure rolls and single shutter clicks. If GPS and cell towers are down, where's the cast member with roadmaps? Instead our heroes randomly come across countryside scenarios where the guys in camos and M240s just kinda let them meander in to embed. The heroes crisscross the landscape and just kinda come across X-box conflicts. I felt like I should have a controller in my hands. More realistically, they would have had their risky NYC-DC journey scoped out prior with a network of safety stops maybe? More tension, please! No walkie-talkies. You gotta have walkies when you're inna "no bars" environment. The frat boy shenanigans between the moving SUVs was dorky. The pageantry of the tent base camp was laughable as patterns of Hughies flew overhead; seemingly going to a destination-like a stadium flyover for a Big 10 game. The "Western Forces" vs US military was confusing and glossing over these warring factions' reasons & history was a lost opportunity- except that it was war. And this war legitimized devoting the final minutes just mimicking a video game. "Joel" was no Sam Waterston ("The Killing Fields") or Mel Gibson ("The Year of Living Dangerously"). So much about this film...aarrgh. I felt like I was being played. Sooooo disappointing. PS: Did anyone else catch how Jesse's "good photo" was a pose straight from the iconic 1970 Kent State shooting photo where a female student is mourning a dead student on the sidewalk? (sigh)
I Love That for You (2022)
FINALLY! FUNNY!
Ima tough sell Who gets extremely irritated when hyped content turns out to be stinkers -BUT...
Man, it feels sooooooo good to FINALLY find a new great comedy where I'm hearing myself genuinely LOL'ing. Bayer's timing/writing is stellar. Dig the cast & roles. This is what Amy Schumer WISHES she could be. Vanessa's just taken the inside track and the half-hour hit of clever stuff is gonna be a huge HIT. It's a chick-thing, so leave me alone with my Super Jackpot, k?
