Candy Cane Lane (2023)
Fun, unique Christmas movie
It was nice to watch a fun family Christmas movie with a unique plot. There are some cute, literal laugh out loud moments as well as some universal life lessons. There are a few bits that are a bit lame, but come on, it is a cheesy Christmas movie and even the great Christmas comedies have those. I enjoyed the unique plot and we all agreed we'd watch it again in coming years. My only strong object is to the blasphemy of Jesus Christ's name which kind of played off as a punchline to a joke question. We could have done without that. We also enjoyed the music and the cast had good chemistry together.
80 for Brady (2023)
Fun, even if you aren't a football fan
A fun, feel good movie and we aren't even football fans. All four of the leading ladies bring their special talent to their roles. However, Sally Fields and Rita Marino really shine. There are some amusing guest appearances as well. If you grew up watching these ladies in old movies as I did, it think you will find it especially charming to see that age doesn't have to mean you become boring. And for Rita Marino to be so active and lovely at 92 is an inspiration. I know nothing about football but still found the story to throroughly enjoyable especially when I found out it was based on a true story.
Hope Springs (2012)
NOT a comedy
Wow. The most pitiful, depressing "comedy" we've ever suffered through. And even if you look at it as a drama, it is very unsatisfying. At the end, we still were scratching our heads and asking "so, what was the problem?" He's been pushing her away for years and obviously there are some issues on his part when they try to have sex again but then those issues just go away??? Since we've been married 31 years, we thought this would be a fun, relatable, middle-age rom-com. It's not. Any laughter on our part was mostly incredulous "what was that?" sympathy laughs. Melancholy drivel that could have been so much better.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 (2023)
Do NOT watch the trailer first
Thankfully, I only saw the trailer muted. Pretty much all the amusing lines are included in it so I was able to laugh during the movie because I hadn't heard them before. Cute movie with the usual family nonsense. Some parts are rather chopping and there was a general disjointed feeling to the plot. My biggest disappointment was the scenery. There are some lovely clips in the trailer that aren't in the actual movie. It would have been a vast improvement if they had worked more of the scenery in and had orchestrated the flow better. The movie is on the short side so it wouldn't have hurt to add some extra scenes and showcased the beauty of the various islands visited.
Life Itself (2018)
It is NOT a romantic comedy - gut wrenching - couldn't finish it.
My husband and I chose this for date night due to its high rating, the actors and it being under the category "romantic comedy." While there was humor at points in the beginning, it quickly became gut wrenching. Tragic accidents, horrible depression, delusional mental illness, a violent suicide which is shown...we couldn't take anymore. We bailed at about 30 minutes. It might be the "masterpiece" that others claim, but we couldn't stomach anymore tragedy on date night to find out.
