La cité des enfants perdus (1995)
A surrealistic masterpiece about unconditional love
THE CITY OF LOST CHILDREN is one of the best fantasy/sci-fi movies ever made. It can't really be compared with any other movie, but if you're familiar with the work of Jeun-Pierre Jeunet you will definitely recognize his brilliance here. Unlike his previous productions, he's got the budget to realize his vision. Combine this with a strong cast, an elaborate story and French humor at its best, and you've got a timeless masterpiece.
The most impressive aspect is probably the breathtaking atmosphere and the acting of the young Judith Vittet. Daniel Emilfork also does a great portrait of the evil scientist Krank. When the movie was released in 1995 the visual effects was of absolute world class. It set a new benchmark for cinematography and even fifteen years down the line, it's able to compete with the visual effects of high budget productions.
Not everyone will like this movie, that's for sure. You need to be patient and have an open mind. If you have that you'll be told a fantastic story about the fears of growing old and the power of unconditional love.
The New World (2005)
An all time low in cinematography
THE NEW WORLD is one of worst movies made in the last 20 years. There are many things wrong with it, but I will try and focus on the most relevant ones. First of all, the props while being contemporary looks cheap which lower the overall appearance. The story would fit a 40 minute TV-episode and yet the movie is 150 minutes. The casting is also very questionable.
The acting of Q'orianka Kilcher and Colin Farrell is extremely bad and the chemistry between the two is none existing. If they where brother and sister in real life, the kissing scenes would probably be less awkward. If anything good should be said, it would be that Christian Bale does a solid effort as "John Rolfe" but once he appears, it's too late to save the movie from being an absolute failure.
Some people might be fooled by the beautiful scenery, the classical music and the low tempo. But these ingredients are actually what destroys the movie. When you combine it with poor editing, useless acting and a shallow story you're left with viewers wanting the last hours of their life back. I would not recommend "The new world" to anyone.
The Invisible (2007)
A dark portrait of what it is to be human
THE INVISIBLE is one of those movies which will leave the audience divided. There is no question about it, the movie has its flaws. The story could be more elaborate and the dialog and acting better. Still "The Invisible" will stay in the back of your mind.
The strengths of the movie is its perfectly executed soundtrack, how it portraits family relations and the interesting characters of "Nick" played by Justing Chatwin and "Annie" played by Margarita Levieva.
If you're looking for a action packed thriller/drama then this is not a movie for you. If you're looking for a beautiful portrait of what people are capable of in their darkest hour, set to a soundtrack that will give you goosebumps, then watch this movie.
