Mesmerized (1985)
I watched it twice
Being a big Jodie foster fan the first time i watched this I was a bit disappointed. It seemed a bit slow and boring. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for this type movie.
The next time I watched this movie with my lowered expectations, I found I actually enjoyed it. Really good acting. Great scenery(the first time I'd seen any of New Zealand).
I liked the simple plot. A very young girl in an pre-arranged marriage with a man she has no love for, and who tells her she will spend her entire life with him on this island. This idea she cannot tolerate. By accidentally learning hypnotism, she then hypnotizes and slowly poisons him to death. By hypnotizing him, the posion he is given does not look like it was forced on him, so she is found not guilty of murder. She's free of him and the island.
This isn't Silence of the Lambs, but I think its still worth a watch.
Nell (1994)
pretty good movie
I read a number of the reviews posted here before I watched this movie. Like many others I enjoyed the movie, but found the ending disappointing. At the end where it is 5 years later, Nell didn't seem to have made any progress in her speech, or basically in anything! She seemed stuck in time. I also thought Liam seemed far more interested in Nell then he did the other doctor, so I was disappointed where he winds up with her at the end. He looked like he really wanted to pack up his stuff and moved into Nell's cabin.
I like Jodie Foster for taking on these difficult acting roles, and not just out to make sequels to Silence of the Lambs. All the acting was really good in this movie. I gave it a 7.
Catchfire (1990)
At least Jodie looked great
I watched this movie recently mainly because I am a Huge fan of Jodie Foster's. I saw this movie was made right between her 2 Oscar award winning performances, so my expectations were fairly high. Unfortunately, I thought the movie was terrible and I'm still left wondering how she was ever persuaded to make this movie. The script is really weak. The story itself may have been somewhat believable if someone like Mel Gibson had played the role of the hit-man. The idea of Jodie running off with Dennis Hopper and his irritating accent was impossible for me to buy into. I did think that Jodie looked great throughout the movie, which was probably the only reason I watched the entire thing. Maybe parading Jodie around with as few clothes on as possible was the only reason the movie was made. I saw a TV biography of Jodie where basically all of her movies were commented on in chronological order, and this movie was the only one never mentioned. After seeing it, I can now see why.
