The Deep End (2022)
Infuriating beautiful
This is wonderfully intimate and beautifully shot. I don't know how the director managed to get the access he did but also I think it goes to Teal's own view of herself. So many of these non-negotiable rules for her inside circle yet she allows an investigator and a documentarian in that are of course not going to give her the glowing reviews that she wants.
She is hard to watch, her followers are hard to watch. I was aware of who she was and her mission before the documentary and my viewpoint on her hasn't changed. It's infuriating the lack of insight she has on herself, the contradictions, the harshness and abrasiveness of her approach. She will continue on because too many of the vulnerable will follow her. I literally had to stop at certain points because I was groaning/ rolling my eyes too much to concentrate.
A Million Little Pieces (2018)
Glittery addiction
First up Sons of Anarchy fans will love the little reunion of some of the series favourite actors.
I loved the book and it's follow up. I don't think anyone else but Billy Bob could of played Leonard but he just didn't have the same pizzazz as the book version.
Aaron is good casting for James Frey, he looks like him. Kudos to Sam for showing us her husbands willy. Thought her directing was good, but like others said it was annoying to see a drug addict so ripped when he really should of been wasting away.
Giovanni was brilliant. It made me nostalgic for the 90's. The chain smoking cracked me up, how things have changed. It's an ok portrayal of addiction but the ending was a bit dismal and felt rushed. Overall it was entertaining to see the film version of the book but the book still remains superior.
Paris in Love (2021)
Paris in love is a hostage situation
The chemistry is so odd. Paris looks like she is so not interested in the guy and the amount of times they say I love you is disturbing. They seem so totally mismatched.
The Third Day (2020)
Interesting
This show lingers with you long after watching. The first 3 episodes focus on Jude Law's character, a man who seems to be in a crisis state. Emily Watson is phenomenal as the profanity laden barkeep, unapologetic in who she is and often seems to be the voice of reason amongst the confusion of the islands customs and conflict. The last 3 episodes focus on Naomi Harris, who is intoxicating to watch on screen, she projects so much strength into the character whilst also seeming to be holding on by a thread. Let's not forget Katherine Waterston whose descent into obsession is thrilling to watch.
There is lots of ambiguity in this show, which might not sit well with some viewers. But if you want to watch something that is beautifully shot, has fantastic acting and is in the vein of the wicker man and midsommar you might enjoy the escapism. It can be quite graphic and confronting, the topics touched on cover grief and loss and individual responses to trauma.
And the backdrop is just so beautiful, a long windy causeway to an island of mystery. Stunning.
