Okja (2017)
Godawful...
I didn't really have a huge amount of expectation of this overrated film and it didn't disappoint. I thought it was just a Greens propaganda to turn everyone off eating adorable super Babe. There was a huge potential though had the film not been made so chee-silly. The production company obviously had big enough budget to rope-in big name actors who didn't mind having this crap on their resumé as long as they get paid handsomely. It was cringe-worthy watching them over-acting while delivering their lines (especially Jake Gyllenhaal). A few queries that I thought made this film not worthy of anyone's time:
– Paul Dano's character Jay smashes K's face and kicking him while he was down for lying. A characteristic of an evil lord from James Bond, not by a Green's Animal Rights protest leader. I was waiting for this character to develop and show more of his real colour (Green?) but in the end he was actually a good guy. I was a little confused.
– Okja being the winner of the Super Pig competition for her size was forcibly mated by an equally large if not bigger male pig to produce more of their kind.
– Okja being the winner of the Superpig competition still ends up at the slaughter house about to get turned into delicious sausages. What happened to giving birth to more Superpigs?
– Many scenes of chasing an oversized truck with Okja in it and magically outrun the authorities.
– Mija traded her small golden pig for Okja's release to Lucy Mirando. How did she get back home to Korea with Superpig? And with newly orphaned Superpiglet?
– The soundtrack on some scenes were just out of place and trying too hard to be arty.
– And a whole lot more...
This can be forgiven if this was meant to be a comedy and with purely Asian actors (no offence). But it does not deserve the kind of attention it's getting. I expected more, way more. The CGI was good though that's why I gave it 2 rating. Did I mention how awful Jake Gyllenhaal was?
Apocalypse Now (1979)
Why the hype?
I just saw the film for the first time and the opening scene with Martin Sheen in the bedroom I thought was promising. But I think that was the only part of the film that made me think this was worthy of an Oscar. I can understand all the hype about this film back in the day way before CGI came along – the logistics and the scale of the film set were all real. But that's all I could possibly like about it. It was too long and wasn't engaging enough to keep me awake. This couldn't possibly get any nominations by today's standards. I was struggling to stay awake only because my good friend who highly recommended it was watching with me. Otherwise, I would have stopped watching and gone to bed half-way through the movie. I was lost every time a long scene came along with lengthy, boring dialogues. Overrated, bad-acting, tried-to-be-arty snooze-fest, I reckon.
Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014)
Please join the George Lucas camp
I watched the film while I was overseas and didn't hear or read any reviews. And I must admit, despite what critics say about the first three films, I thoroughly enjoyed them all. The movie started off really well and I got really worked up on how the story will unfold. Cheesy lines, coughing, tobacco-smoking auto-bot, short shorts and high heels in a barn, impossible scenarios... can only be forgiven if Age of Extinction, like other Transformers films, is only 2 hours long. But my God! This went on for too long and without plot. Michael Bay should just retire and leave us with good memories of the Transformers films. George Lucas would be pleased to see you in his village.
Wolf Creek 2 (2013)
Butchered
What can I say? I would have given this film 2 stars if I didn't see the first one. First off, why did all of a sudden Mick Taylor turn into a racist lunatic butcher? His Aussie Dundee character was over the top and shown too much on screen that there wasn't much left to mystify the audience. Head exploding from a gunshot? Come on! Rutger, the German backpacker still able to fight back after being stabbed in the spine... and without blood. And that overstretched torture scene that went on forever and if you're not an Aussie or English, would have probably walked out of the cinema. And I'm not too sure how the Poms are going to like being the target of verbal (and more) racists attacks by the central character. It was cringe-worthy and embarrassing. And from just living in his gritty shack with a shed where he kept his victims – to now an elaborate underground maze with booby traps. Are we expecting Mick to have metal claws wearing a hockey mask on part three? This is a massive fail that I can guarantee is going to be last one. Such a shame and should have left us with a much memorable part one.
Breaking Bad (2008)
Reason why you lost a star
Loved every minute of this show. The development of the characters, the acting. All just compelling viewing and believable until season 3's "fly" episode. OMG! What were they thinking? The main guys Walt and Jesse acted out of their characters. Especially, usually smart Walt using a clipboard, a shoe and a mop to kill a fly... in a lab? Then the two start hitting each other that I can only liken to watching Curly and Moe of The Three Stooges. Were the original writers on strike or were they on methampethemine when they made this episode? It was a waste of time and should not have been made and included on the series. I still love this show and will pretend this sorry episode did not happen.
