Triangle (2009)
Why is the rating so low?
What I really liked about the movie was how Melissa George's character (the protagonist) evolved over the course of the movie and also how our perception of her evolved.
She went through 3 stages of evolution - being helpless, trying to help others and then killing everyone.
Our perception of her as a mother also went through 3 stages - careless mother, concerned mother and abusive mother.
I thought this was really intelligent scripting.
Another interesting aspect was the fact that consecutive loops were not same - that added to the mystery.
The only drawback of the movie was that there was little to no character development for other characters. They were all cannon fodder.
An Action Hero (2022)
Would have been a killer movie if they had committed to the concept
Just watch An Action Hero on OTT- mainly for Jaideep Ahlawat. Was underwhelmed because of how little I cared for the characters.
Ayushman's character was not clear at all - no depth nor consistency - was he a narcissist who believed his own myth or a guy who is good deep inside but caught in a bad situation - the writer/director wanted to have it both ways and that I believed unravelled the film. It would have been a superb film if we got to see a narcissistic "villain" movie hero versus real life villain/don.
Jaideep's character was unidimensional and such a waste of talent.
Ending would have landed like a bomb if they had leaned into "the action hero" being a real life villain. If that was what they were trying they failed.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
MCU formula done badly
I think everyone can agree that Thanos caused a major problem for MCU. Now they have to resort to turning heroes into villains to make it interesting - but in this case the hero turning into villain and the whole shebang already happened in WandaVision. This movie just presses undo button on Wanda's character development and sends her back to the middle of WandaVision. I think anything other than Wanda turning into villain would have made this a better movie - admittedly not a high bar given my rating.
The titular multiverses appear for a few interesting minutes and those are the most interesting few minutes in the movie. I got thoroughly bored and decided never to watch another MCU movie in the theatre. (I have watched all MCU movies since Avengers 2012 to Avengers : Endgame in the theatres)
Kaleidoscope (2023)
Old wine in an old bottle pretending to be a puzzlebox
For any heist movie to work, the heist needs a surprise element , the villain needs to be compelling and the pay off has to be satisfying. I think Kaleidoscope misses the mark on all 3 aspects. The heist was just going through the motions. The motive for the villain being the villain was not even compelling and the payoff was really weak. Was I cheering for the villain, the "heroes" - nothing matters. Pay-off, what pay-off?
I generally like the portions where the heist is pulled off in a smooth way even if they encounter difficulties but this was one of the stupidest ones ever. As I said nothing matters in the end.
Spoiler: The protagonist going after the villain was not really compelling at all. It made the protagonist look like a naïve fool and not a seasoned thief.
The characters were cookie-cutter: thief with heart of gold, mean guy, nerd guy, hot nerd girl who chooses mean guy over nerd guy, etc. Character motivations were weak - to remain spoiler-free, I will just say in lots of scenes the characters did not act consistent with normal humans - they just acted certain ways for dramatic impact.
Acting was nothing to write home about. The lead had to look smug and satisfied when he pulled off stuff and sad & upset when bad things happened to him. He did that. Everyone else was given a script and they do things because they are in the script.
The idea of watching episodes in any order was cool but really did not add any interesting element to the viewing experience.
Mild spoilers ahead: the only interesting episode was the one with the prison break - I think that one was done well (though there were many questions and loopholes)
