Don't Look Up (2021)
In Your Face Satire Is So
Someone thought "Let's grab some of the biggest stars in the world and do a hit you in the face satirical movie about saving/losing the planet."
All that star power should have stopped me from fast forwarding, it didn't.
All that pretentious overacting was too much for me.
From super cool Leonardo DiCaprio playing a nervous nerd scientist/teacher to actress of the millennium, Meryl Streep, playing a win at any cost politician, the only one who came across as somewhat believable was Jennifer Lawrence's character. Why was Timothée Chalamet even in the movie?
No doubt this will win many awards because the whole culture today is to go along with the majority for fear of being whack a moled. They'll say this is a great movie, when it really isn't.
I get that they are pointing a mirror at the world and saying "Look how idiotic it's all become" but hitting us over the head with a huge overacting hammer isn't going to do it.
I get that American humour and satire is very unsubtle but after deducting the fast forwarding, I want my 1.75 hours back.
Heels (2021)
The Arrow Wrastles!
I watched the first episode and felt an instant nostalgia.
Was this the town of Duffy or Dillon?
Jack Spade or Coach Taylor?
Small town wrestling instead of small town football.
Yep, Friday Night Lights is now Friday Night Fights.
God bless America!!
River Queen (2005)
A Disappointing Movie
I was really looking forward to this movie but sadly it didn't live up to expectation.
A good movie has the audience identifying/empathising/sympathising with the main actor. Unfortunately this was very hard to do with Samantha Morton.
The storyline seemed very disjointed and didn't flow as it should/could have done.
Keifer Sutherland appeared to be little more than window dressing and made me wonder why he agreed to play what appeared to be a bit part. Beautiful scenery and the acting of Tem Morrison and Cliff Curtis was about the only plus.
Maybe by being a kiwi I set the bar higher for locally made films. Maybe the change of director/ supposedly hard to work with main actor has biased my opinion.
Maybe I'm just trying to make excuses for a movie which could have been great.
A lot of maybes which still does not explain why this movie just lacked anything special.
It could have been great, it wasn't.
The Journeyman (2001)
I'm feeling generous - 2/10
I thought I was in for a good movie.
I'd just watched Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner in Open Range, which I thoroughly enjoyed, and was looking forward to another "gritty and violent" movie.
About the only thing gritty was my gritted teeth when it finally finished.
The two main actors I'd best describe as wooden. The rest of the cast, with the exception of Barry Corbin, couldn't decide whether they were in a dark western or a comedy.
Not a movie I can recommend.
