The Passenger DVD
I have been yearning to watch this movie for 30 plus years. I don't know why, but was in an old video store in the early 80's and when I saw this movie/video on the shelf. It caught my attention, I remember I asked the the Co-owner what she knew about it, she dismissed it.
I at that point, being very fond of Jack Nicholson's career from especially the early 70's (from pictures such as Chinatown, Coocko's Nest, Missouri Breaks etc), wished someday I would check this "Passenger" Movie out.
Lo and behold sometime this year I read or caught wind that the movie "The Passenger" was being released on DVD. It has been difficult but I finally got it from Blockbuster mail-in DVD.
The first time I watched it I was relieved to finally watch a movie without music and theatrics, but it was slow and a bit hard to follow. After 2 hours late into the night I admit I dozed.
The next day I knew I had to view this again. I watched it fully though again, and got to learn and appreciate it more. Part of the reason of this was I have been to the locations set in the film before (Andalusia part of Spain and Morroco or North African Desert).
I basically filled in the missing portions and then got the basic concept of the film. Afterwards I filled the what was missing and watched it again with Nicholson's commentary 31 years later.
If you have confusions or mishaps with this film the above mentioned cycle and especially hearing the commentary from Jack will definitely solve it all for you in the end.
It's not an easy movie to watch the first time, but for film buff's it is so rewarding. You will be in sky heaven at the end. I am so glad to for once, watch a movie without annoying music and Play Station 2 or 3 distraction. It is definitely intriguing.
Sweetie (1989)
A Struggle to get through
I just saw this as a new release on DVD. Usually I like Jane Campion. But this was way off. It was extremely hard to get through, and was in general just so strange. The acting was mediocre. If I was in a theater I would have walked out in the first half hour. The first 5 minutes seemed interesting especially the music, but as soon as the main character steals the boyfriends newly planted tree the picture quickly dies. Adding the severely psychotic sister to the movie just throws a massive curve ball to the movie. Yes Sweetie is somewhat key to the movie and it's titled after her, but showing 5-6 of her fits got to be too redundant.
The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (2004)
Mr. Sellers
This latest HBO Movie on Mr. Peter Sellers once again, after two decades of forgetting him, has in the past month re-invigorated my interest in Sellers again. In fact I just spent 25 bucks on purchasing the 40th Anniversary of " Dr. Strangelove--etc". This is something I would have never done a few months ago.
Having said that, this all enabled me to once again re-kindle a long appreciation I have always had for Peter Sellers, he was truly amazing- I cannot think of anyone who I appreciated as a "kid",or a teenager and later as an adult as much as Mr. Sellers, except maybe Clint Eastwood.
One thing I can most of th time count on in regards to HBO Films and shows is that they always nail it, and thanks to the actors and general production they did do this once again.
I definitely recommend it because unlike most of the garbage you see on TV these days, it is something you will remember day after day.
