Moussa (2021)
Great series
This series is very well made, from cinematography to acting. The difference in cultures among different Egyptians, and people who have settled in Egypt, though the story does drag on a bit, it gives a realistic portrayal of vengeance and the consequences of it. Musa was a strong willed man who was built on vengeance, though heroic the mistake he made ultimately cost him his life and his family and friends. Though he was a desirable person and protagonist, he was a person who himself made mistakes that cost the death of his own family and the one's that he loved despite the times he tried to rectify his mistakes. But in the end, everyone suffers and this is realistic unlike any Hollywood clichés. So If you want a series that is both beautiful and action packed I recommend this.
Boogie (2021)
Definitely had its moments, but shallowness of the plotline made the film end up being average.
I was excited to see this film, what attracted it to me was seeing Pop Smoke on the trailer but learning the story and seeing how climatic the trailer was especially about the story and the life of a Basketball player challenging Asian stereotypes to be just mathematicians or restaurant owners etc... and actually taking up a sport mostly dominated in America by anyone but Asians. I especially enjoyed seeing a contemporary Asian narrative (in this case, Chinese) because of their underrepresentation in the media. On the one hand I really liked Boogie's father who was hard and tough on Boogie but was always supportive, despite the challenges he is facing as a father and a husband, while being on parole. I love the support he showed towards his son. However I feel like the rivalry between Monk and Boogie should have been explored better, especially considering how they have both been with the same woman, Boogie's challenges knowing that the one person who he sees as a threat especially in the sport which is mostly his entire livelihood has laid with the person he loves. And also the girlfriend showing her independence and taking the step to make sure that their relationship doesn't fall apart. Monk barely appeared in the story, and could have played more of a prominent role altogether. All of this was filmed months before Pop Smoke passed away, so there is no excuse.
Baby (2007)
Disappointing
I personally give this film an average rating of 6 out of 10, I was expecting a lot better from the film. The concept was great, the look for the characters and the portrayal was great especially with the gritty realism the movie had. But I was disappointed mainly in the lack of structure for the plot, the dialogue was mediocre and the only time the story got interesting or caught my attention was when Baby shot the man who killed his friend when he was a kid. It was boring until the part the little kid was shot when Baby and his crew robbed a house and his friend murdered the little kid. After that the story became really interesting. I think it would be awesome for this film to be remade by a better director with the same gritty portrayal, only change up the dialogue and structure the story better.
Born to Dance (2015)
I think the film is actually pretty good.
I really like the film, it's entertaining and it adds a new feel to usual hip hop films that you see. I understand that some people were not impressed by the acting in certain points, but the creators of the film made do with what they got. The plot line is unoriginal, but they more than make up for it by using the unoriginal concepts in an original way. For example, If you were to compare this to You got served; you can see similarities of people risking their future to win a competition and how they usually turn out to be underdogs but end up winning. In this case, they made it original with the characters that they have and original with the kind way they execute the story.
Jing cha gu shi 2013 (2013)
Jackie Chan needs to call it quits for the Police Story series
I liked Police Story 2013 and it was a good adaption to the series, however Jackie Chan needs to call it quits with the police story series. There are six installments to it, and the last two lead to a more darker tone for the story. However the 2013 version looks like a rewritten version of New Police story (2002). Just like new police story the antagonists threaten to bomb an area with hostages to kill people, the only difference is in the 2002 version, the killers proceed with the bombing and the story begins from there. The 2013 version is about stopping the victim to prevent the bombing and nothing else. Despite the characters back story from both versions in the 2000's the story itself isn't much of different. I feel like Jackie Chan is pushing his luck with this series by rewriting the story three times. First time the story was written it involved making four sequels installed to it, then came new police story which is completely re-imagined and rewritten, and then comes police story 2013, which to me seems like just a rewritten version of new police story. I think it's time for him to move on from this series and go on to making something that isn't action. Give us something new.
ABCD (Any Body Can Dance) (2013)
Great movei
I reckon at the moment that this is the best dance movie out there, in my opinion. It's predictable in the sense that the underdogs of the entire film end up winning however, the story itself was not predictable at all. How they won the dance competition was surprising, and most importantly how Vishnu got the dance crew together. Of course there were a lot of parts there that were cheesy and possibly unnecessary but at the same time it successfully got my attention which was enough for me to keep watching it. The acting was very good, the over acting by some of the characters could have been done without however it's very comedic. People say that it's a copy of step up but I disagree. It is actually a lot better than step up because after Step up 1 the series begins to have a dead story and i stopped watching after step up 2. Overall i recommend ABCD.
Toe to Toe (2009)
Under rated
*spoiler alert*, you have been warned. I think this movie is incredibly under rated. The acting is great and the story is well developed. It puts things on there for a reason and not for display. For instance It shows various scenes of Jessie being unclothed in some bits but only because it's her character, when I look at her nude scenes I don't think "Oh it's sexy" I think, what is wrong with her? that is convincing acting. The characters are well developed and the things like nudity, violence and drugs are not glamorized like other suburban movies. The characters don't feel like complete card board such as movies like 13 and/or step up 2. It has 3D ring to it and you feel the characters. Anyhow If I was to rate this movie I would give it a 6.5 to be fair.
