Jesus liebt mich (2012)
Refreshing
Jesus liebt mich (Jesus loves me) is a movie about Jesus (Jeshua) returning to earth in order to prepare apocalypse. Hey meets Marie who reminds him of mother Mary. She introduces him into "her" world which is totally chaotic. She just dumped her fiancé during wedding ceremony, her mother starts a new relationship (with archangel Gabriel) and as she finds out what Jeshua is really up to, she's the only one who can actually stop him from ending humanity. Marie has to convince him humans aren't as bad as it seems as the ending is about to begin....
I found the movie quite refreshing and entertaining and I also had to laugh out loud a lot. There are lots of comic aspects and the actors play well. For a German movie I was also quite surprised about the special effects. The story itself is also very critical and should not be taken too seriously.
The Host (2013)
The Host - Told From the Wrong Angle
The Story: Planet Earth is taken over by an alien force. Spider-like creatures are planted into people and take over their bodies in order to live a peaceful life together. Only few humans are left. One of them is Melanie. During the first scene, she is caught by invaders while trying to escape from a hotel. An alien called "Wanderer" is planted into her body. As Melanie's body awakes, a so called "seeker" tells Wanderer to search Melanie's mind and find out whether Melanie has lived with other humans. Soon, Wanderer sees Melanie is still here and tries to reclaim her body. She persuades the alien to run away and leads it into the desert where Melanie is found by her uncle Jeb. He finds out an alien force has been planted into her but decides to take her with her into a secret system of tunnels and caves where many other humans live. Melanie is reunited with her brother and boyfriend but has problems convincing them she is still here. Many people try to kill her but things get better when Wanderer and Melanie decide to work together. However, there is more danger: the seeker has caught track of the humans.
Book and Movie: I've read the book by Stephenie Meyer and really liked it a lot. The conflict inside Melanie's body is worked out quite well and I really didn't see the end coming. The reason why I could identify with Melanie and Wanderer is that during the first part of the book, we learn how Melanie lives with her brother and tries to escape the alien force. We see how she falls in love and finally gets caught. I think the reader develops a special relation to Melanie and gets really mad when the alien force takes over until we find out Wanda is not as bad as it seems and has feelings, too. This however, doesn't happen in the movie. As I already said, the movie starts with Wanda being put into Melanie's body. We don't know Melanie jet, so we don't really care. All we know is the alien force is taking over earth so we don't like it either. It think the movie does not give the audience enough time to identify with Melanie. As a consequence it doesn't drag you along like the book does. It's always hard not to compare movie and book when the book is so entertaining. It's a little like twilight. The movies can never do what the book did so I probably expected to much. Looking at the settings and characters, the movie reflects the book really well. The only problem is the way the story is told from the beginning.
The Movie: It is entertaining but it's hard to identify with Melanie or Wanderer. The scenery is pretty cool, the landscape amazing and the actors do their best. It must have been hard to show two beings are actually living in Melanie's body. The movie settles this problem with this voice inside the head. Sometimes this is a little confusing and I think they could have solved the problem in a different way - maybe by making Wanderer's voice sound different. I also wished for a little more music. Some scenes were far too quiet. Except from the beginning of the movie, I think they made the best out of the material they had.
The movie is entertaining but the story is a little shallow. To me, it's told from the wrong angle.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)
Entertaining
I'm one of the biggest Lord of the Rings fans imaginable, actually I spent my entire youth in Middle Earth and some part of me is probably still there. You can imagine how much I looked forward to seeing hobbits, elves and dwarfs back on screen. Naturally I had to be a little disappointed about the Hobbit.
When watching the Lord of the Rings, it all seems natural to me, it really soaks me in, I'm part of that movie. The Hobbit was entertaining too, but I watched it as an outsider and didn't feel like a part of Middle Earth this time.
It is a lot of special effects - too much for me. In the Lord of the Rings, the orcs were played by real humans wearing costumes. They seemed to be so real and they were scary just as the black riders. In the Hobbit, the orcs and foes are animated, it's like in the new Star Wars movies. It touches you, yes, but you are no longer a part of it.
If you read the book you know how short it is and that there is no way of making three movies out of that material. So Peter Jackson and his team had to find some new aspects to it and take them further.
The Hobbit is no longer the center of the story. He is the main character, yes, but the new tragic hero is Thorin. He, the heir of the throne wants to claim back what is his. In order to make him stand out from the other dwarfs, he was given a look that reminds me a little of Aragorn. The difference between him and Strider is only that Thorin wants to claim back his heritage and Aragorn needs a few battles to realize he has to make a choice and take back the throne.
Also the Wizard Radagast who does not even show up in the book has his own story fighting the Necromancer which does not come up in the book, too. It's entertaining to see Radagast and Thorin (the hero) but it's not what you might expect from the book.
To sum it up: some of the scenes really are too long. Orcs hunting the dwarfs through tunnels - that's just unnecessary as well as huge stone monsters fighting. I guess it's supposed to be impressive but to me it's too much special effects.
The story is good, the actors are brilliant but the new hobbit-look is not as natural as the Lord of the Rings.
Movie 43 (2013)
Well ... some laughs
I think the problem about this movie is that it goes to far. It has some funny moments but all of the scenes end in such a disgusting or crazy way it leaves you with this kind of "what the hell was that about?" feeling. When I go to the movies I want to feel good about it instead of asking myself "what am I doing here?". They should have stopped every scene one minute earlier that would have saved some comic aspects. If you still want to watch the movie, I recommend watching only some of the scenes. Christopher Mintz-Plasse getting crazy about a girl having her period for the first time really is entertaining as well as Gerard Butler as Leprachaun. Still - I don't get why all of these actors were willing to participate in that movie. To them - this might have been fun. For the audience it's flat, disgusting and it really makes no sense. A kid could have written this script. Sometimes kids are funny so the movie sometimes is too, but most of the time it's not - at least not for me.
