La passion de Dodin Bouffant (2023)
Like a good meal you have to wait for
A slow movie that was worth the wait made me cry more than many movies I've seen of late, in a good way that is. I guess you could parallel it to waiting for someone to cook a delicious meal and having no other distractions as you sit and watch them. The two main characters really good acting really good visuals on the kitchen and nature. Kind of funny in a way to see these well-off people spending all their time focusing on food and their own pleasure while at the same time enjoying their pleasure. The poetry that was added in the movie really heightened the film which I note when contrasting this to just a cooking show. Course to be fair as of late I've been enjoying cooking shows more than I ever thought I possibly could but I think I like the competition in it. So with that said if you're in the mood to watch people really prepping things in an old school sort of way with a poetic hint of Love behind what they're making then I'd say this movie might hit the spot. One last shout out to everyone that worked on this movie it really came across in capturing top notch acting and the ambiance of the whole place. Nice Job 👍
The Holdovers (2023)
Really nice movie
Great acting, scenery, pace, and just the whole feel of the place made for an enjoyable movie. Really enjoyed how the story started with everyone at the school, to just a few boys, then just the three of them. Then expanded from there to get bigger to slowly include the city and other people they had known outside of the school. What else to say to get the required characters. I really liked the scene when she was reaching into the closet to get the Box on top. Was a really well lite closet and just reminded me how often I kind of overlook my own closet possibly because as a kid I I found myself spending much more time in closets playing hide and seek and just exploring. Which that thought probably opened up good foreshadowing the movie provided about her own child hidding in the closet waiting to be found and shared again with the world.
Napoleon (2023)
Good movie would like to see the full thing.
Like the playfulness in the personal moments, though Josephine's importance never really settled on my brain. So that could have been improved. Possibly the director's cut might develop her importance and value to the movie. Fight scenes done really well, did a good job showing Napoleon's strategies without being too overwhelming. Particularly I like the underwater scenes during the battle on the lake those are done really nice as well as how the cannons didn't necessarily obliterate the water but made retreat difficult. After he left Moscow I would have liked to seen more about what the troops went through or at least they're dwindling numbers but again that might be in the director's cut I hope.
Wish (2023)
Not that Far Far Away to being a good movie
That the queen threw away her husband so easily seemed odd. He was trapped and maybe you can still help him. Her reaction would have made more sense if the guy was just real evil the whole way through, verse him just being fearful of this empire falling apart, and his addiction to wishes that make you feel awesome, as Asha pointed out. Possibly if he would have just said hey I suck at being a king and all the citizens were like yeah she's way better, then we can have a real moment and deal with his mental health and also women empowerment, both of them were right there for the taking. Also the ending of the movie is the queen running around trying to combine people's talents and then a quick pivot turns back to magic being the focus. So that seemed a bit confusing, is magic the answer or is combining talents of people, seemed like combining people's talents was a throw in that didn't fit the magic/wish theme of the movie. The songs are all kind of forgettable, they sounded like Lin-Manuel songs that just didn't have the hook to keep them flowing, nor any deeper relevance to the plot. Possibly if the songs had more animation to the numbers I could have got into them. Also where is the bad side kick if you're going classic Disney. Was there a reason they didn't have an animal to either make himself seem cool or at least add some humor. On that note I really didn't hear kids laughing in this movie theater so clearly the jokes weren't just lost on me. So yeah don't waste plot points, get some better humor, make the bad guy more interesting, and good grief if you want lin-manuel you should have hired him.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)
Backstory of rocket well done
Liked about 60%
-rockets backstory and his old friends, did a really good job showing rocket being innocent, thought really hit it home with the naming sequence. Even found the guy who created rocket pretty interesting in the backstory part at least.
- the new gold Jewel head guy was pretty cool, and his mom, even the part when he got a pet was kind of nice job making him relatable.
Other 40%
- beyond rockets backstory it seemed like a lot of the other plot was kind of choppy and could have done without or at least tied it in better
- rest of the regular acting and characters seemed like they were really trying they just didn't have anywhere of substance in the plot to direct it.
Overall
- rockets backstory made the movie worth watching but the rest of it I would fast forward through or at least time your distractions to anything that happens in the future/present.
The Whale (2022)
Stage play, empathy workout
I watched it with the reminder that I was watching a stage play. Someone else wrote that which helped me appreciate and remember that the focus was on the characters and the limits of what I would be shown. This focusing thought helped me put myself inside that box verse waiting to get away from my discomfort of the tight intimate space. Course I'm the sort of person who never feels like knowing the plot spoils anything but in this story I think not knowing what happened did make it all the better. I would say the whole movie culminated into a beautiful ending which I'm only revealing as this review is apparently too short. I did like his message about caring and it wrapped up nicely in his daughter's essay which shared how sad she was when she found someone hiding their loneliness. That was the nice reveal that left me in a lot tears, that the daughter was just lonely and sad vs the label of evil that the mother had boxed her in with. The movie also gave me a lot to think about such as how the different characters struggled with their inability to stop caring, even with the various distractions they hid in. Thank you for the movie everyone who worked on it, and also the play which I now want to go see 👍
The Queen of Basketball (2021)
Top shelf
Lucy Harris does such an amazing job of bringing this documentary to life. I loved her intro where she talked about herself without telling us who she is. I loved her support of her family and how she talked about what could have happened without being down on her situation. An all around outstanding message told with a level of life that brings tears of joy. Also, well put together and great use of footage and editing. Earlier today I got curious so I googled "the best thing about humanity." For me it's knowing that people like Lucy are out there. People who have overcome hardships and yet can tell their story with such joy life and humor. Thank you for making this documentary.
The Boss Baby: Family Business (2021)
A Tears of Happiness rating
One of the best movies, plus great song, Together We Stand. I think I liked it so much because I almost didn't like it at first. Then about halfway in I started to really like it. Finally, the conclusion with the song and the talking amongst the brothers brought tears of happiness. Said another way, it just felt like it wasn't insisting you like it. Often I find that attractive in people and places. Probably more exciting and memorable because it tells me I'm still trying to like things that don't throw me off balance. I would equate it to Me, You and Dupree, as well as the Family Stone. All movies that the pace seemed off, and then surprised me with tears of happiness. I like a lot of movies to be honest, but I like the surprise ones the best.
Jockey (2021)
Sunsets and fire
Enjoyed the movie, a lot of good emotion, an interesting change focusing on the jockey's face during races. Good use of the sunset theme paralleling the end of the jockeys career. The fire and sunsets kept me in a reflective mood which I thought was perfect for this movie.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
We Loved infinity war, not this
My son and I Loved infinity war 10 stars, great plot and character interaction, this one felt lacking in both. I'm glad others like it though, my kid who is 7 fell asleep 💤 at 1 hour, he asked me 40 mins in if it gets more interesting . When he awoke an hour later my answer was yes, but not much. Loved Captain America and the hammer, movie tingles in that scene. He might rate it lower?
