Nathan's Kingdom (2020)
Bold, interesting view on family.
It's a simple story of brother and sister, told in a big bold way. Worth the watch. The performances are wonderful. The movie's visuals are interesting. Both moving and relatable.
Treintañera (2016)
A great short with a lot of heart!
In just under nine minutes Treintañera does what most films try to do. Introduce you to a relatable, sympathetic character that has a clear arc.
I've seen many films, features and shorts, and few have the heart that Treintañera has. I believe this because of two things. The script and the lead actress' performance, both one in the same.
Tamara Bunker writes a clever story. Filled with relationship and nuance. Tamara doesn't hit us over the head with her story. She doesn't tell the story through dialogue, one of the traps many short films suffer from today. She tells the story through relationships; what's more important - marriage or career?
Valentina's (Tamara Bunker) relationship her "Abuela" is rich, even though it happens with in a nine minute time frame. Bunker and Tina D'Marco (Abuela) have a great chemistry, true to life. Abuela wants what's best for her granddaughter, and in the end they come to an understanding.
The Chambelanes are funny. Bunker even rivals Chevy Chase in her talent for physical comedy.
Is it perfect, if not it's pretty close.
