Tales from the Hood 2 (2018)
Initial thought - seriously? Final thought..wow.
***Minor spoilers***
I started to write a scathing review about this movie. When I watched the first scene, I was sure that it had no redeeming qualities or values whatsoever and I was prepared to turn off the movie. It was so bad at the start that I was wondering just how something like this could ever get funded. I like silly and stupid, but I felt like this was over the top, at least at the onset. I was literally speechless.
But for some reason, I let it play.
Gradually, it got "less bad" as the movie progressed. Then, my entire view of the movie turned when I viewed the final "story" called "Sacrifice". This story actually touched me and I felt something. Up until this story, the movie was lacking in sustenance as far as I was concerned. However, the manner in which they addressed the sensitive issue of race and racism in that session was enough to turn my one star vote alone into an eight. Personally, I could have done without the prior stories, although, given the ending of the movie, I now see what they were attempting to do and just why they included the seemingly meaningless prior three stories. All of the stories served to form the basis for the "morale" robot, I suppose.
So, my final rating is an 8, although I was fully ready to give it a one after the first story. My recommendation is to hang in there if you make it through the first story. The lessons in the fourth story are thought-provoking.
Devilman: Crybaby (2018)
Not worth the time
If you have ever watched something because you couldn't stop watching, but did not know why, then you know how I feel right now about this show. Sometimes, you watch a show until the end to see if it gets better and sometimes you watch the show because it is so captivating. For me, it was more the former, than the latter. And, much like a lover who cheats on another, I felt immediate regret that I had watched it. This is a very dark show that gets darker as it progresses. However, there is no redeeming value to it at all. It is one thing to watch a dark show that appears to have a purpose, but quite another when, at the end, the first thing out of your mouth is "that's it?".
I would recommend watching literally almost anything else, unless you are into gratuitous violence, bloody animated nudity and sex, a plot that jumps all over the place and then goes in circles. It is amazing what makes it to the screen these days.
Watch at your own risk.
War on Everyone (2016)
OK movie
I am not sure what I expected from this movie. I knew that it was a dark comedy and those are sometimes "hit or miss". I found it to be a little disjointed at times with no real flow to it. I thought that the actors worked well together and Tess Thompson was lovely as ever. I just felt like something was missing. My initial comparison was to the cult classic "Pulp Fiction", but movies like that don't come around too often. If you truly enjoyed "Pulp Fiction", you will likely get some enjoyment from this movie. If you did not, then don't bother watching it because it is not nearly as good as PF.
I gave it a "5" because it did make me chuckle a couple of times (and Tessa was lovely).
Haven (2010)
Wow, what a fantastic hidden gem of a show!
I am a sci-fi nut. I enjoy watching shows that take me from my meager realm of existence into another plane. I stumbled across this show purely by accident. I think Netflix recommended it based upon my past viewing.
Initially, I was kind of Luke-warm towards the show, but by the time the first season ended, I was all-in. The characters were very well-developed, the writing was solid, and the intrigue kept me guessing from beginning to the end. There was never that "down" or "filler" episode.
If you like shows such as the X-files, Supernatural, and Fringe, then you will love Haven.
Dead West (2016)
Don't Waste Your Time
I'm not sure what I expected when I played this movie, but about 15 minutes into it I was already wondering how much more I would have to endure. This film has no redeeming value whatsoever. The film was poorly scripted, the acting was awful, the directing was questionable, at best. I'm not sure how this film was funded. I watched all of the way through because I kept saying to myself, "it's going to get better" or that there is some "twist" that will just grab me. Sorry, nope. What you see in the first 15 minutes is what you get.
Hooking Up (2009)
Absolutely Terrible
This movie ranks among the all time worst that I have ever seen and that includes the movie "Bullet" which I previously had as the worst. The jokes were lame and juvenile, the acting poor, the plot nonexistent. There was no character growth or development, even for a misfit comedy. It's kind of like the movie started one way and then ended the same way. Don't waste your time. Usually movies with substance this weak will at least have some laughable moments. There were none. It's amazing what gets funded and produced. I wish I'd read the reviews prior to me watching on Netflix. Shame on me! Should be a zero out of 10.
