Salvage (2009)
Rubbish
If no one else wants to mention it? I will. To anyone outside the UK who doesn't know were this movie is shot, you might deem some entertainment value from this lower than B-movie horror. Unfortunately, to anyone inside the UK, once you realise its shot on the old set of the now cancelled liverpudlian soap 'Brookside' any atmosphere is instantly lost. Then you try to pinpoint which house was 'the one were Trevor Jordache was buried under the patio'. The location finder should have known that this street is etched into the memories of any self respecting British soap fan. Brookside. Brookside. Brookside. Brookside.
The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
Thanks Josh Whedon... A work of Sheer Genius!
I will keep it short because the less you know about this film, the better it will be. How refreshing to watch an horror movie that doesn't fall into the same trap that most do these days? That trap of starting out with a good idea that ultimately falls flat on its face or just runs out of steam towards the end. To many horror flicks fall into this trap and this is were 'Cabin in the Woods' excels and turns the genre on its head. It starts out like the most boring, clichéd, run-of-the-mill story 'five teens head out for a weekend at a run down log cabin' ...Yawn, but thats exactly what Josh Whedon the director wants you to think. You cant really say to much without spoiling it but I will just say, if you like horror movies that keep you on the edge of your seat, by the end of this movie you will have discovered how many 'edges' your seat can actually have! An absolutely outstanding movie that will change the genre for good, I hope. (I cant wait to watch it again with a friend who doesn't know what is going to unfold before his eyes) I cant believe all the negative comments this movie receives on IMDb. To describe this movie in a sentence, I would say... 'Cabin in the Woods is The Inception of the horror genre' and the absolute saviour of horror movies in general.
District 9 (2009)
An absolutely brilliant movie !
Amidst a summer of decent sci-fi spectaculars (Star Trek and Terminator Salvation spring to mind) Comes this.. 'District 9' A movie with next to no hype whatsoever.. unlike the two afore mentioned movies. Star Trek was good but not brilliant as was Terminator Salvation, spoiled a little maybe by anticipation and everyone hyping up the movies so they never really had a chance of standing up to original expectations, as is normally the case with summer 'blockbusters', pre-release trailers never helping on this count neither always showing off key scenes to sell the movie and giving away plot twists into the bargain! And then there came 'DISTRICT 9' out of nowhere, and its a corker. I wont put any spoilers in but just say that not for a long time as a movie delivered on so many levels.. I knew nothing about this before I saw it, only the star rating on I.M.D.B was used as a guide. So all I will say is.. GO SEE THIS MOVIE... IT IS AN ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE! (and thank you Neill Blomkamp for re-installing my faith in Sci-Fi movies once more)
Gran Torino (2008)
gran torino.. good???
Whilst I understand why this movie gets good reviews, one thing is missing from a lot of the reviews that is or should be blindingly obvious to anybody who is a movie fan... Which is, its not a very well made movie. The story is top notch, acting from everybody is on the whole adequate but its clear that something drastic went wrong behind the camera. Im of the 'opinion' that eastwood might have been overworked during the making of this film and it shows clearly, poor camera-work throughout, scenes that seem rushed, I know that no two production teams are the same but compared to eastwood's earlier directorial efforts this movie looks like its been made by amateurs.. camerawise anyway. Am I on my own here because no-one else seems to bring up these obvious faults in what would have been a classic movie!
Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
very good film... but...
Don't get me wrong.. this IS a good film.. but I cant help thinking that all the publicity its getting, though much of the publicity is very well deserved is albeit hyping it up.. a little bit too much. am I wrong?? I watched 'slumdog millionaire'.. 'after' the media advertising saturation it got left me no option(as an avid film fan) but to go and watch it. Im glad I did, but it left me with a feelin of 'did I miss something whilst watching?.. because absolutely no way did it live up to the hype. This has got to be one of the most hyped movies ever! definitely watch it.. but I bet you feel the same as me after.. my point is.. (the movie industry is in serious trouble when any half decent movie gets this much hype)
