Sands of Oblivion (2007)
Hardcore Browncoats Only!
While the idea is more original than most Sci-Fi movies, the execution is, as usual lacking. While the practical mummy effects are not bad, and the "Gun Nut" character is over the top giggle inducing, the only real draw is to see Morena Baccarin and Adam Baldwin reunited on the small screen. I suspect that was the idea all along. They do the best they can with what they have but the "must see" moments for me were in the first 40 minutes or so when Morena's character sported some Tomb Raider style shorts. Not high brow cinema I know but you can't deny true beauty when you see it!!! And Adam Baldwin once again hams it up as the guy you love to hate. If you just want to watch a couple of your favorite Firefly characters have a good time with some sub par material then this might be for you. If you want good acting and character development then be advised to look elsewhere.
Flash Gordon (2007)
We lost SG-1 for this???!!!
Okay, I am a fan of some unique sci-fi...Automan, Max Headroom, Space: Above and Beyond, Lexx, etc.. I dig a certain amount of quirkiness and originality. But this show has neither, to think that the Sci-Fi channel put a lot of money and thought into this show is frankly terrifying. The writing is on par with Space Rangers. The F/X are on par with Time Traxx. The Hawk Men don't even have wings!!! They look like rejects from the auditions for Beastmaster!!! The only reason I gave it 3 stars is that the actresses are rather attractive. It's still not enough to get me to watch. I can't believe the ratings for this are better than those of Dresden Files(Are they?). At least I cared for those characters. Sci-Fi has the capability to produce quality shows, BSG, Farscape, Atlantis, and at least Eureka makes me laugh. I can think of a dozen episodes of SG-1 I'd rather watch than any one episode of Flash Gordon. This kind of garbage however, makes me fear for the channel's very existence. They could be a network that ends up being known for riveting, thought provoking sci-fi, or they could end up being known for producing schlock like Frankenfish, Boa Vs. Python, and Ice Spiders. The choice is theirs, and I suspect most viewers will not grant them a second chance.
Space Rangers (1993)
Some of the Worst there is...
First, I want to come out and say that I only watched one episode of this show, "Death Before Dishonor". Frankly, that was enough for me, and I have since used that episode as the lowest end of the scale by which I judge Sci-Fi. From Otherworld to VR5 to the current Flash Gordon, this remains the bottom of the proverbial barrel. I remember the initial buzz this show created, what with the resumes of some of the lead actors. I also recall that the visual F/X were not bad for the early 90's. While the actors were doing the best with what they had, the writing was severely lacking, and reminded me more of a Saturday morning cartoon script than anything else. The only thing I took away from this show was that I never wanted to see anything like it again. I was also gravely concerned that this show would make the networks more reluctant to take chances on future Sci-Fi oriented series, due to it's quick demise. Fortunately, that did not happen in the long run, but to me Space Rangers remains the type of show that gives Sci-Fi a bad reputation.
