Fireflies (2004)
This show had a beautiful tone to it
I can't understand why people disliked this show so much. Personally, I think it was beautifully shot, with complex characters that didn't always have to be likable - characters with layers, not simply god/bad like those featured on all the soaps masquerading as dramas.
This wasn't a fast-paced drama, nor did it ever pretend to be. This wasn't a formulaic cop drama or hospital drama that could sustain itself through guest stars and soap-like plotting. It didn't milk the fire fighting for the possible repetitious dramatic potential, they didn't go fire-fighting every week, they focused on developing their characters. And I'm glad they did. This wasn't one of those tired and exhausting 'quirky' 'Australian' monstrosities like The Alice or McLeod's. Thank god.
If you want a laid-back pace, complex characters and depth, then this is for you (hope for a DVD release). If you want melodrama and empty characterisation, go flick back to Home and Away and Neighbours.
