Mr. Peabody & Sherman (2014)
A Fun Movie for Kids but not Dreamworks best
I never grew up with The Rocky and Bullwinkle show, so I went into this film knowing absolutely nothing about the set-up or plot in the original cartoon. As a whole this movie works reasonably well for a younger audience, it's huge fun and is pretty entertaining. I just don't think this is one of Dreamwork's best and I wish it could have been more creative and clever with the time-travel aspect.
The motion sequences are well done (especially when the characters are surfing the sewers of Paris or flying on Da Vinci's flying machine), and the majority of the characters are hugely likable (especially Mr Peabody and Sherman themselves), but the plot is a little bit all over the place, occasionally has some weak script writing and most jokes fall flat.
It's safe to say that all the best parts are in the trailer and I really hope that Dreamworks does better next time, but overall this isn't a bad movie for kids and could even appeal to the Horrible Histories crowd (no matter what age they are).
The Lego Movie (2014)
Fun, chaotic and hilarious
This was one of my most anticipated films for 2014 due both due to the fact that Lego was a big part of my childhood and the animation style was so unique and refreshing that, being the animation geek I am, I had to see this.
My tip for viewing this is to not question what the heck is going on for the first 10 minutes of the film, you just have to go with it and you will be pleasantly surprised. The plot seemed non-nonsensical and almost completely random at points and it does require some understanding of the toy and films that are referenced. Adults will also enjoy the pokes at politics and consumerism.
In one scene the characters go to 'Cloud Cuckoo Land' where they follow a cat with a unicorns horn into a building shaped like a dog's head in order to meet with famous Lego figures, then a robot pirate jumps through the window and tells his back story, and an argument causes Abraham Lincoln to fly on his jet powered chair through the roof. The whole 100 minutes is stuff like this. But its immensely hilarious and doesn't have a dull or unfunny moment.
The sentimental side introduced near the end was nostalgic and a good twist, but didn't make me all that emotional in the way that films like Up or Toy Story 3 did. I also wanted more from the side characters, pertculary Superman and Green Lantern, and more of the awesome action sequences.
Fun and entertaining for everyone, particularity families, and one of the funniest films I've seen in months.
Frozen (2013)
Disney's best film since the 90's
It seems that Frozen, much like Disney's other more modern animations, is one of those films that you either fall head over heels for, or you find it a bit unremarkable. Personally I loved this film and found it to be a great addition to the long line of classic Disney animations. I would even say that Frozen could be the best Disney film since the Renaissance in the 1990s (The Lion King, Aladdin, Mulan, Beauty and the Beast etc.) and is much better than Tangled, which many people have been comparing to this.
Beautiful animation, fantastic character design (if you exclude of Olaf) and a great soundtrack make this a must see.
My only problem is that the plot seems fairly rushed and weaker than other Disney films, The main villain's motives didn't seem developed enough as other Disney villains (or as scary for that reason, and Elsa didn't have enough screen time for my liking.
One of Disney's darker films with breath-taking songs make this absolutely magnificent.
