The Little Mermaid (2023)
Overall a better live action remake than many
Halle Bailey's voice was fantastic. Whatever acting lines were "by the number" were made up for in the emotion she conveyed in the music. I did miss the big opening number for King Trident and his daughters, it seemed more like a pre-planning meeting than a once a year ceremony/celebration. I also wish they would have done the crab cooking scene, and given us a longer version of Ursula's demise. Prince Eric was as dreamy as ever, and I enjoyed the animal voice actors. I thought the animation/CGI was very well done; it felt pretty natural despite being mermaids under the sea. I felt that the change in setting was a good choice, it helped make casting choices make sense, it didn't feel shoe horned in. Overall, I would enjoy watching it a second time.
Wednesday (2022)
Fun without being as snarky as other teen shows
I thought this was a really fun, and interesting take on Wednesday Addams. It has much the same feel as teen dramas like Riverdale and Sabrina (which I enjoyed), but without the sex, cursing, and never ending meanness that pervades those. The acting is great, and the writing is high quality. There are a bunch of twists, so although you may guess the ending, you can still enjoy the ride.
My husband complained that she was not as biting as in the Addams Family movies, but I think that's a good thing, it would be hard to maintain that level for eight episodes centered entirely on her. .
You follow Wednesday as she tries to solve a series of murders at her parents' alma matter, which is now her boarding school as well.
Tim Burton maintained the humorous tone the Addams Family is known for. It has a lot of funny or lighthearted moments without being slapstick.
Exterminate All the Brutes (2021)
Interesting, hard to follow, story
I've only made it through the first episode. It's an interesting, bleak, narrative. You have to be paying close attention, because it seems to be the narrators stream of thought, and it jumps from Europe to Africa to Asia to the filmmakers personal story, and then back again. I could not follow it.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
Great movie, that tells the full story
I was lost in the theatrical version, it made very little sense. Yes, this version is long (and I could have done with 50% less slow motion), but it makes sense. Snyder explains why the characters are doing what they are about to do. It made it MUCH more coherent. I also love the beautifully shot, bombastic, action scenes, they felt much more epic than the old version.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018)
Fun and gory feels
I've just finished Part 4. I have to say that I loved it! Yes, there are some messy things that make no sense. But overall it was a lot of fun to watch. This final part finally added some real gory horror moments that had been missing from the first three parts. I'd say it's still watchable for tweens and above, but not children. I enjoyed how the ending really pulled it all together and gave us everything. Was it perfect? No. Was it fitting? Very much so.
