Wait for it
6 September 2021
I'm glad I waited until episode 7 to review because I would have agreed with the current rating of 7. I knew it had potential to be more and it finally delivered with this past episode. We see the consequences of this business and Kanan's ambition, both in the community and personally. I was on the edge of my seat even though I knew what was about to happen. I'm left with a pit in my stomach and 50's speech at the end was perfect for the situation... and in reality. Solid 8 now and hope it goes up.

Heartwrenching

Warning: Spoilers
An unspeakable act creates a domino effect of chaos in Chinatown like nothing we've seen before on the show. I was in awe of the action sequences but the emotional toll of racism is the star here. If you've seen the previous episodes, you know Jacob is a hero. To see him treated that way was utterly heartbreaking. 10/10

Not a "masterpiece"
6 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm baffled at the people who are saying this is a masterpiece, the best ever, Oscar-worthy, etc. The only thing I can think of is that they must have only watched horrible shows in their entire life. I really wanted to love this as my family is Egyptian and we lived in Cairo, but it's just a mediocre horror series. Not suspenseful or scary. The creatures and such are very cheap looking. When they were searching the temple for the queen's grave, and the claw came around the corner and scratched the wall, I rolled my eyes. It was SO cliche and not a realistic claw. The main character seems depressed and in complete denial to the point of illogic. Yet suddenly he believes and can solve the mystery in a matter of seconds? I thought from the book description that he was supposed to be brilliant and a lot more charasmatic, but he seriously mopes around everywhere. It's okay, I'll probably watch the whole thing eventually because it's short, but I'm not excited about it.

I rarely leave reviews, but after reading all these 10/10 reviews I felt I had to say, lower your expectations if you're used to good horror.

Hollywood (2020)
10/10
The Big Picture
2 May 2020
I'm glad I waited until the end to rate this. The beginning has no hints as to what the theme is going to end up being, except for what star struck people do to get by when they get to Hollywood. But the overall message is what Hollywood does to a person and how brave people took a chance to face the discrimination of the era to make something unheard of and wonderful. Jim Parsons stands out in a character like we've never seen him play before, and his range is endless. Charming Dylan McDermott is also terrific as a washed up actor who still has a love for the dream, but wow, he really survived in his own unique and controversial way. Sex is a major theme--who you're willing to sleep with can make a big difference in your career. But the main theme is facing bigotry with bravery, and the entire cast did a fantastic job. Ryan Murphy has created another show that is a slap in the face to prejudice everywhere. He's done it again.
