The Call (2013)
Almost an eight or higher...
Nearly the whole film was amazing. Completely unreal, but you could tell they were fully committed in the telling through a cohesive vision. The characters were consistent right up until the last minute. It seemed like studio execs butchered the ending- the main characters completely behave as if everything they'd gone through had never happened.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Wanted to laugh
My wife and I wanted to laugh through this whole thing- and it wasn't at the parts intended to be funny. Super cheesy. And it seems they had the bones of a story and a surface level exploration of character. They could have switched around many of the scenes and no one would be the wiser, because that's how insignificant they were to the story. The best parts were the flight scenes. But those made up about thirty minutes of the 2 hour movie. Wait til streaming or digital.
Gokseong (2016)
What happened?
I really wanted to like this film. I enjoy Korean horror, and based on the reviews, I thought I'd see what the fuss was about. Well, there wasn't much. So many needless scenes and transitions. There were some comedic moments, and maybe if I'd known that is was a horror/comedy beforehand, I could have enjoyed it more. I don't understand how people say this movie is action packed. Seriously? Good production quality, but overall it was a mess... the rules of the supernatural are never established and there didn't seem to be consistency with what evils were at work. It kind of seemed like they made it up as they filmed. Family dynamics are weak. The infidelity gets tossed aside like an old shoe.... oh so many things.
Nobody's Fool (2018)
Not sure what people are conplaining about.
It's Tyler Perry. It's Tika Sumpter. It's Tiffany Haddish. It's great. If you aren't a fan of Tyler Perry's films or style, or if you dont enjoy performances by Sumpter and Haddish, then I can see why you might not like this film. Otherwise, it's laugh-out-loud funny, not as predictable as you might think, and has real character development and connection. Great film.
Beethoven's Treasure (2014)
Not the worst.
I had really low expectations for this film. I was immediately interested and engaged with the opening scenes. I was so sure it would all fall apart soon after. But actually- it was cohesive, there seemed to be a well-developed narrative, and my kids liked it. Usually when a film starts falling apart, me and my kids will lose interest. But we were able to sit through the entire film twice. The acting style was over the top, and I think if they pulled back a little into realism, it might allow us to actually pay attention to the dialogue. There were some dialogue scenes in the middle that were difficult to pay attention to. A few funny lines with the main characters and fun action scenes with the dog. The male and female leads had little chemistry- not romantic chemistry... not any type of relationship like friendship or brought together by a common interest or as rival- just felt nothing there. Yes, they are on screen together, but I felt no connection. The kid was memorable. Acted more realistic than the adults. Decent work considering where it sits in this series. I'm rating it on its own merit here and not comparing it to other films I've rated.
