Stargirl: Pilot (2020)
Where Have I Seen This Before?
A fast jaunt through teen formula fiction. Picture this- a girl, new to town, after a move she didn't want. She is instantly hated by the popular people and is forced to be friends with a group of oddballs (going to make a guess and say that they have the sorts of skills that will make convenient plot devices later). She discovers her family is connected to a secret past. Where haveI seen this before? Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and how many other movies and shows. I absolutely love seeing the Justice Society brought to life. But, this is a show that takes no chances. Good enough to see if it gets better, but it will have to go beyond the painfully predictable to stay too long.
Instinct: Pilot (2018)
Instinct for Exposition
Yikes, the dialogue is one long explanation about why everyone does anything. The only time motives aren't being clearly told, people are explaining their jobs to people who know what their jobs are, or explaining someone's background to them. Even the killer is nice enough to explain why he is killing. It follows that age old rule of good stories- tell, don't show. It's great if you want a formula consult police procedure that leaves nothing to the imagination.
