Juno (2007)
Facing the facts about Juno
It is what it is. A daft, lightweight cutesy spin on teenage life, sex, complications and consequences. It's not meant to be some epic life changing piece of viewing that's going to rock your world. The purpose is to entertain, which it does. Of course it's not realistic, no parent would accept their child being in that position so well, nor would they approve so quickly of them having it adopted. Like all films, these things are embellished to keep the narrative going. I am fairly certain when they made this film they weren't looking to influence the teens of today, and its hardly a bad influence and it's aimed at an audience who are liable to be aware of this. And any teens or young children who are liable to go out and get pregnant will most certainly do so with or without seeing the film Juno. Surely the teen stars of today such as your Jamie Lynn's and Miley's who have a major tween audience tuning into their shows daily are a far more negative influence with pregnancies and topless photos. And if you pay attention the preferred reading of the film is a fairly sensible one at Juno's age she wasn't ready to be a mother and she realised that. Clearly thats a positive message for anyone of a similar age. And Vanessa showed that when you're ready for motherhood it will come around for you. At 16, it suggests it may not be the right time for you. If I'm a teenager and I can read that from it, I trust the majority of my generation can do the same.
River City (2002)
Not spectacular but definitely worth a watch!!
Okay so it's hardly Dallas but don't dismiss it because it's Scottish and you've 'heard' its mince. It's actually a very good watch, with story lines just as credible as other soaps shown through the Uk. With story lines such as explosions, drug addictions, the comeuppance of a notorious gangster involving a stabbing, hostage situation and a confrontation at the docks - to name but a few (see link below for screen caps) http://www.bbc.co.uk/Scotland/TV/rivercity/gallery/docks/index.shtml You feel for the characters as much as you would in any other soap, its not only dramatic it's funny some of the one liners are fantastic and have you in stitches.
A weak starter but has really come into it's own over the last few years receiving all most as many ratings as the national soaps on occasion.
Don't listen to people who say it's rubbish and don't just take my word for it, watch it - see for yourself - you won't regret it.
