Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Ad Astra Per Aspera (2023)
Asylum?
One thing I thought was missing after Una revealed she turned herself in was, I thought for sure she did it to protect her crew and Captain. Sadly, it was all about her wanting to exist publicly as an Illyrian. Pretty selfish of her not to consider the implications to her crew and Captain of her turning herself in. Especially since she had that very conversation with Pike when she tried to resign.
I liked it just fine. A great character piece for Una and Rebecca played it VERY well I thought.
Why didn't they mention that Una saved the crew in 'Ghosts of Illyria'? Only the fact she was an Illyrian allowed her to do so.
Love the Gilbert & Sullivan reference from Q&A (short trek). My favorite.
I thought Yetide Badaki's performance early was forced but recovered nicely by the end of the episode.
I was really, really hoping to hear "There can be no justice, so long as laws are absolute. Life itself is an exercise in exceptions" (or something to that effect) I think that would have more aptly applied to the defense here more than an after-the-fact implication of asylum. The judge or prosecutor could have easily come back with "Pike never reported he was granting Una asylum".
The only white male other than Pike (Una's first lawyer) is characterized as an idiot.
At least Una realized she got off on a technicality.
I thought of Archer and T'Pol's hug in TATV when Pike hugged Una, but it was MUCH more emotional.
I don't think the asylum argument would have stood up in a real court. Just like in Measure of a Man when Picard brought slavery into the defense.
A vast improvement over last week's episode IMO.
I'm glad Una's back!
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Those Old Scientists (2023)
Close to 'Trials & Tribblations'
What's not to like?
I really felt for Chapel in the elevator... but as a trekkie - it kind of made me happy... now we know the SNW writers aren't going to screw this up? (Spock)
Quaid and Newsome were so AWESOME!
The entire SNW crew was awesome as well!!
NX-01 saves the day!!
Travis and Hoshi (ENT) get mentioned!
There is nothing to complain about... I've already watched this thing twice.
I was smiling, laughing, and eagerly anticipating the next laugh the entire episode. Instant classic IMO.
The only nitpick I have is that we didn't get Tendi and Rutherford too.
Ending this episode with the SNW cast in animation capped it all off so well.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Subspace Rhapsody (2023)
Instant classic!
I think the meaningful character development that was melded into each of the crew's songs just worked incredibly well.
My personal favorite was when Una and Kirk were together. (Connect to your Truth)
The funniest line by a member of the crew was M'benga when he said at the table, "...and I do not sing..." ... lol
Ending with the entire crew joining in was just fantastic. (We are One!)
Loved Chapel's song (I'm Ready) in the lounge.
Gooding obviously has an incredible pipes, she wonderfully performed 'Keep us Connect'! This is even more powerful when I learned she lost her parents in 9/11.
Chong once again nails it. Not only her solo but with her conversation with Kirk. I really liked the song with her and Una, but the Mary Poppins bit didn't work that well.
Even Ethan Peck can sing! "The EX" .. lol
My only real bummer in this entry was, again, the lack of Ortegas. She has a good voice too... I wish they could have given her a solo and taken this opportunity to develop her character a little more.
What a wonderful cast we are blessed with.
I've watched every hour of trek ever produced many, many times and I haven't come close to laughing as hard as I did when the Klingons broke out in the boy band performance. OMG I was in tears... dishonorable indeed! ... lol I felt even better when I learned that Bruce Horak (Hemmer) was the Klingon captain.
I was optimistic going in. "Q&A" was my favorite Short Trek and we already knew that Gooding could sing. I wasn't really prepared for how well this was written and put together.
I get the impression that the folks on the internet think this doesn't rise to the level of Buffy's musical episode. This blows it out of the water... I can't make it through one of their songs after listening to this.
I really don't know that they could have done it better.
Bravo!
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Hegemony (2023)
Too much plot armor...
Quinn. He could quite possibly be the best recast of a Trek character ever.
I didn't much care for April's conversation with Pike. He should trust Pike to complete the mission regardless of personal relationships.
I was happy for Erica. Quite the pilot she is and I'm glad to see her on an away mission. Loved her smile when she pulled of the rapid ascent.
The large Gorn ship entry into the atmosphere was very cool, but I would have loved to see some more of the ship.
Pike and the big soppy hug... eesh...
Wow... Captain Batel infected with Gorn eggs... I hope they save her, I like her character.
Pike states Hemmer was "brave"? ... how about honorable Captain...
I thought the adult Gorn was pretty cool.
I swear I heard the alien detector from Aliens while Sam was scanning for the Gorn...
Why was Spock the only one that HAD to complete the mission to the wreckage? ... did it translate to a Chapel/Spock moment for the writers? How did Spock know the orientation to place the rockets on the hull to achieve the pinpoint accuracy spelled out by Pelia? I didn't see him do anything that anyone else couldn't have done.
Pretty convenient that Chapel is the only one that survived AND there just happens to be a space suit available for her...
The space battle with the adult Gorn and their ascent from a crashing hulk was pretty darn awesome, although Spock probably should have grabbed the dead adult Gorn to take back to the Enterprise.
I thought we could have seen more of the journey of the hulk and the crash into the Gorn thingy on the planet. I think we might have got about 1.5 seconds there...
Spock and Chapel are beamed aboard, given specific orders in the heat of an ensuing battle and Spock just has to stop and say he's sorry?!?!?! .... Jesus... .. and what the frak is he sorry about?
Where are some other StarFleet ships coming to the rescue/aid? .... a Star Fleet space ship/crew and an entire defenseless federation colony were obliterated and no one else shows up to help? The Gorn seem to be able to make it...
Wow, a serious situation for Pike here... does he follow Star Fleet's orders and hightail it out of there or stay, risk his entire ship and crew, to figure out how to save the colonists and crew that were beamed up by the Gorn. I don't think we knew the Gorn had transporters until this episode. Ample drama for a cliffhanger here. Too bad it will probably be 2 years before we see part two.
This episode was OK, but it felt to me like the writers ran out of gas. Too many conveniences to push the plot along... seemed clunky/sloppy.
This will undoubtedly bring up BoBW... it's not on that level though... just not written well enough.
It was nice to unexpectedly see Scotty though.
Star Trek: Lower Decks: Grounded (2022)
A Magic Carpet Ride...
I'm so happy Lower Decks is back!!
There is a part of me that wanted to see that investigation, but then again this series in its entirety is from the Lower Decks' perspective so I can understand why we didn't.
Well-paced and the humor was good and not forced. Everyone was in character and as this series does, paid homage to a wide variety of our beloved Star Trek. I loved the Bozman Montana theme park, and Sisko's restaurant (which I confess I didn't know the entire name - 'Sisko's Creole Kitchen').
The best line? ... when Boimler said "... for Kirk's sake" while talking to Mariner in the vineyard. Lol
The second best line? ... when Tendi said "holy $hit" after Captain Freeman told her story. Didn't expect that one. ... lol
Tons of great lines as always.
Loved seeing Tendi asserting herself and taking charge.
I really felt Mariner feared for her mother.
Always a great ride in Lower Decks.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part VI (2022)
Very disappointing effort
I watched this. I'm not really sure why. I could have just jumped in the last episode and taken in anything of worth this series had to offer.
The ever controversial "3rd Sister" was another Disney "woke" insertion. Horribly written. Initially I gave the actress the benefit of the doubt but she ended up being horrible. No range whatsoever. She was either screaming or talking very softly. Her line delivery was just bad. The only plus to this character was her looks. I have no problem with the introduction of new characters as long as their role means something. This was a horribly written character. I believe they knew this when they went out with a message preempting any nay-sayers. I'd be willing to bet that a HUGE percentage of these "racist DM's" were injected by Disney. They needed to attempt to quell any criticism of this new character. This all sounds mighty familiar. Sony did the same thing with the all female ghostbusters movie to the point of deleting social media criticisms and preventing further posting on the horrible movie.
We knew the following characters were not going to die:
Vader
Obi-Wan
Luke
Leia
So the writers needed to well... WRITE and give this series meaning. The ONLY thing of any value that came of this was Anakin absolved Obi-Wan any responsibility/guilt for creating Vader.
... and we got that in the last episode.
This series was a soup sandwich. Too many WTF headscratchers to even mention. They make Vader look like an idiot by not killing the 3rd sister. Hell, the lead inquisitor should have done it.
IMO the only acceptable redemption for the 3rd sister would have been to become a protector for Leia.
We knew up front that they were spending much less $$$ on this series. I could care less what the effects look like as long as the story is meaningful and engaging. Hell, I LOVE TOS, repeatedly rewatch all the episodes, and ALL their effects were cheesy by today's standards.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: The Elysian Kingdom (2022)
M'Benga in wonderland...
Some think the first 40 minutes were unneeded or bad. I don't agree. M'Benga has to figure out what was going on and then figure out how to fix it. We couldn't just jump into the final act. I liked the story premise.
I enjoyed it, although I'm with many that are ready for some more serious Trek like we got when the season started.
It seems everyone is loving Anson's performance here, I don't think he led the pack with his performance. Maybe I was expecting more of a Regent Milo Virini (BAB5) type performance. Christina Chong deserves the gold medal here. I was truly surprised at her acting chops as it's taking me many episodes to warm up to La'an. I also think they miscast 2 characters. Una HAD to be the evil queen and Uhura should have been the forest arrow person. This seems to be a trend I'm not liking. Una, aside from the one episode, isn't given enough meat in these episodes. Do the writers have something out for her, or does Uhura get more because she checks some SJW box? She's the second in command of the flag ship of Star Fleet for gods sake! ... and it's not like Rebecca Romain can't act... I have nothing against Celia Rose Gooding. I enjoy her acting, but Uhura is a cadet. I also have to say that while I really enjoy Ethan's performance as Spock, he was dreadful here.
Did anyone else think Ortagas' sword was too long for her shortness? .... lol
What really happened to the two poor soles that received those arrows from Una?
Nice to see Hemmer get some time, I'd almost forgot he was a member of the crew.
I didn't know what crew member was that played the dissenting blah blah that was directing the dragging of Hemmer. IMDb says it was Jenna Mitchell???
I guess they ran out of the normal cast...
So, Spock wasn't able to "fight off" the effects of the nebula thingy? ... and Hemmer was?
The final act was pretty powerful and I for one am glad they wrapped up this plot line. Not sure we needed to see a teenage Rukiya. That reunion might have been better served for the character M'Benga in a later visit, maybe sometime during season 2.
I tip my cap to the costume/set folks. Well done.
Even though we only briefly have been watching our SNW cast, I enjoyed watching them ham it up and have some fun.
A step up from last week IMO.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part IV (2022)
It's sad this is so bad...
Reva is horrible. It's hard to get past that and enjoy the rest of this series.
She couldn't intimidate a 10-yr old, and was just going to put her is that stasis stuff? Good thing she was so rudely interrupted, eh?
Then, in the end, she is so smart because she put a tracker on the ship? ... but that tracker wouldn't have come in to play had Obi-Wan not rescued the child (and Reva was going to freeze our princess). Did anyone think she let them go?
So, Reva gave the toy robot back to Leia?
It's just bad.
Sad really, but not surprising coming from Disney.
I feel for Moses Ingram as she is a beautiful woman whom I'm sure can act but she's given a crap, shoed in woke Disney part.
Dune (2021)
So much better than the 1984 version...
Finally, a Dune movie that has time to breathe and settle in.
I was gripped the entire run.
All actors are outstanding and all characters are very well represented.
It's an EPIC SCI-FI movie. Visually beautiful with a wonderful score.
I'm confident that part II will give this epic story everything it deserves.
Bravo!!
Star Trek: Lower Decks: Wej Duj (2021)
More lower decks...
Ah ha!!! The first 10 out of 10 season 2 episode is here!!
What's not to like?
Seeing the lower decks on the Klingon, Pakled, and Vulcan ships was awesome.
Much reverence to STVI and DS9 Klingons is shown here. All the way up to and including how the Klingon ship captain was killed. Just like Gowron's death if I remember correctly.
I'm all for an addition to the Cerritos crew. Bring on T'Lyn!
The Vulcan ship was beautiful! She saved the Cerritos much like the "E" saved the Defiant in FC.
"Retos" on Captain Freeman's t-shirt, Tendi climbing a mountain just like Kirk in STV, Boimler wearing a shirt with the words "go climb a rock" like Kirk while wearing the jet boots like Spock... all good stuff. Nice that STV isn't forgotten.
... and we get a progression of the Pakled story.
.... oh, and don't forget the lower decks on the Borg Cube at the end and throughout the credits!!! Not a twitch! HAHA!!
I'm sure "90182" as the designation of the Borg cube means something, but I don't know what it is.
All in 25 minutes.
I love this series!
Countdown: Inspiration4 Mission to Space (2021)
The door is now open!
One of the most inspiring enjoyable TV miniseries I've ever watched. Good people doing good things for the right reasons. Bravo!!!
Star Trek: Lower Decks: Mugato, Gumato (2021)
First time disappointment while watching this series...
Well, the pronunciation story is that the creature was named "Gumato" originally, and Kelly couldn't pronounce it so they changed it to "Mugato", then Shatner and Kelly both pronounced it "Mugatu" and it stuck.
This is the worst episode of LD yet for me. I guess humor is relative. I thought the whole Mugatu making out with one watching and jerking off his horn was "too far", certainly not needed, and not funny.
I don't think Mariner is or was black ops. I think she was just feeding the rumor mill as we saw at the end of the episode. I could be wrong of course.
The Tendi "B" plot was OK, but nothing special. The "A" plot was about the same. Nice to see Rutherford and Boimler team-up.
Keeping up with the easter eggs was easier this time as they've slowed down the pace a bit.
No need to go down 'The Orville' route for comedy. I never thought I'd end up going below a 7 rating while watching this.
Gunpowder Milkshake (2021)
Turn your brain off and have fun...
Don't think too much and enjoy it. I got quite a few belly laughs out of this. No worse than "The Kingsman".
Star Trek: Lower Decks: Strange Energies (2021)
Not a bad start to season 2...
I much preferred 'Strange Energies' to 'Second Contact'. It took three or four episodes to warm up to STLD during the first season, but I just had a better vibe with this one.
While I didn't enjoy the "mother-daughter" theme here, I'm glad they are past that and we can move on. That said, they needed to address it after the season 1 closer.
While the "god-like" powers were overdone, there were snippets during the show that cracked me up. Ransom's disciples lifting weights, the bolder... it wasn't too bad. It did seem to drag on.
Mariner's holodeck stuff was pretty cool. I liked this line from Boimler: "they keep showing me lights!" ... lol
Tendi zapping Rutherford was pretty funny. I like everything these two are in, and while a little over the top for Tendi - I can see her seriously worrying about losing Rutherford as a friend.
Mariner resolving this whole Gary Mitchell thing by repeatedly kicking Ransom in the nuts was not required IMO and a little tasteless. I would expect that on The Orville, not here.
Off to the Titan next week... I can't wait. We need to get Boimler back onboard the Cerritos!
Not horrible, but not up to the level the last season ended with.
Black Widow (2021)
I was hoping for more...
An enjoyable watch for the most part. All the actors did a fine job. The "big baddie" is Dreykov - but he doesn't get enough screen time to become the villain he's supposed to be. Pretty hammy with all the "pheromones" and all.
I think this could have been so much more with a better, more experienced, set of writers. It almost at times felt that Black Widow as not the focus of her own movie. Scarlett is fantastic as always and I enjoyed the addition of Florence Pugh as Yelena. David Harbour is enjoyable as "Red Guardian", but I don't care that I now know what that character is or was supposed to be.
The comedy felt forced at times with Yelena getting the most laughs from me.
The CGI, etc. Are off the charts as in all the Marvel movies.
Marvel needs to move on and come up with some new stuff... this was, yet again, hero has conflict with someone they are emotional about, they have to fight, they make up, the bad guy is floating around somewhere in plain site, they have a big fight at the end and the good guys win. We've seen enough of this.
I think the Black Widow character (and Scarlett) deserved more and I'm sad that #1, this movie wasn't made and run right after 'Civil War' and #2, that this movie didn't provide a sufficient emotional punch for one of Marvel's best and well developed characters. It's sad. The idea behind this movie was good I think; it was just executed poorly.
It will make a good sum of money because Scarlett is that popular, but I left the theater a little disappointed.
The Dig (2021)
Based on Britain's most substantial archeological find...
Quite enjoyable. Well put together, well acted, well paced. I enjoyed all the performances.
I was particularly impressed with kid that played Robert Pretty. (her son)
They took some story telling liberties, but the gist of the story was accurate and the characters were correct for the most part.
But hey, they just had to get in their 15 seconds of wokeness in at the end... can't have anything on TV that's not woke you know... nothing...
Nice to learn that Mr. Basil Brown got his due, albeit not when he should have received it.
Star Trek: Discovery: Su'Kal (2020)
Oh boy...
I'll just put some bullets together as we'll see how this all pans out in the last 2 episodes.
- Good lord, how much work do they have to do in an attempt to justify the lunacy of the Tilly to #1 selection? Seriously... are they setting her up for failure or is this designed to make Saru look like he's incompetent? This is all making Vance look like an idiot as well. He should have installed a Captain and #1 when Saru chose Tilly. (neither should have been Michael)
- I'm about done with the Stamets/Culber thing. They are both commanders acting like folks that don't have any Star Fleet training. Suck it up for gods sake. No one else going on dangerous missions get the blubber fest these two give us.
- The Adira/Gray thing is wearing thin as well. Blu del Barrio's acting is getting worse and Gray can't figure out what? He was a trill for gods sake.
- Ossarya actually has now come across as a bass ass. How the hell did she know where Discovery was? hmmm... did her boy Ryn place beacon on board, or is he a beacon? This should prove interesting. So Discovery's new shields couldn't prevent them from beaming aboard?
- Tilly just got her ass handed to her. Yes, sitting in that chair is more than acting like "Killy".
- Burnham has to go to keep our Captain objective? Good lord, someone fire him. It was proven she DID need to be there too.
- Pretty cool, the species change thing... A good shooting day for Doug Jones I'm sure.
- Michael's performance and insight dealing with the child was outstanding and I found it to be touching as well.
- So, the child had a tantrum and all the active dilithium in the galaxy went inert? Really???? I certainly hope this isn't the explanation we've spent all season waiting for. More please.
- The visuals continue to be amazing.
They've got a lot of work to do to make sense out of all this. I guess we'll see how it pans out. It will be action packed and full of tears I'm sure.
The Emerald Chain seemed more than formidable this time.
The Midnight Sky (2020)
Is it over yet?
Wow, how underwhelming...
Clooney is horrible...
Kept waiting for something that never happened.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Were expectations too high?
The first trailer was too good.
Chris Pine doesn't get enough credit. He's frakin awesome in every role he plays.
Chris and Gal are a match made in heaven. They are so good together. Honestly, the only reason this movie is any good at all.
I wasn't impressed with Kristen Wiig as Barbara Minerva... didn't hate her, but just meh.
I thought Pedro Pascal was impressive. "This is the way"
A HUGE miss when Dianna is taking Trevor to see the Air and Space museum... she should have shown him good ole 1701!!! Then Trevor could have said something like "I want to fly THIS one"!!
This at times seemed like the TMP of Wonder Woman... too long with certain scenes... like her learning to soar for instance. Things kind of dragged.
I really like how it ended... it wasn't winning the fight that won the day. Dianna won the hearts and minds of all involved (except Minerva), that's where she excels.
I don't think we've seen the last of Cheetah.
Really impressed with the lasso work in this one.
The armored suit was pretty, but Cheetah made short work of it. It seemed to be pretty flimsy, almost like aluminum (I think it even sounded like banging trash cans at one point). This was just a MacGuffin that had no real payoff except to make Wonder Woman look cool for a couple scenes and sell merchandise.
Also, we never saw the Dreamstone after Lord renounced his wish... I wonder where it is?
I thought this was good but not great. Well short of the achievements of the first one. I should have expected a let-down here... just kind of bummed I got it.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 16: The Rescue (2020)
This is the way...
Well, this episode was a little disappointing and awesome at the same time.
I COMPLETLY had the timeline all fraked up (had to throw that in there for Katee :-) ) I thought we were after 'The Rise of Skywalker'. HAHA... then a young Luke shows up. Seriously, how good was that deep fake?!? I was impressed.
Other than the dangerous approach into Giddeon's ship, did anyone ever think our "girls" were in any danger? Good lord, how many Storm Troopers can get killed in one episode without anyone shooting them getting at least grazed? I know Storm Troopers have a history of being stupid and horrible shots, but man. Taking the ship was too easy IMO.
I expected Boba to handle some of those spaced Dark Troopers. I was disappointed he wasn't more involved in this episode.
I wish Boba would have planted Mercedes on her ass. What was all that attitude about?
Now, that all aside, I wasn't expecting Grogu to get rescued. I thought the valiant attempt was going to be made and they would have failed, giving us something to look forward to next season. Now I don't know what direction they are going. Are we going to see them take back Mandalor?
The Moff/Mando fight was pretty darn good. Dark saber against Mando's armor and staff was pretty intense. The Mando/Dark Trooper fight was also awesome.
I knew when the X-Wing showed up it was a Jedi, but I had no idea it was going to be Luke!! Love how he mowed down the Dark Troopers... that was pretty kick ass. Love Moff's facial expression when he figured out it was a Jedi.
REALLY sad to see Grogu go here, I mean really... certainly glad he's with Luke for training. A sad goodbye for all us Mando fans for sure.
One loose hanging thread.... doe Mando still possess the Dark Saber? After Moff told Mando how Bo-Katan had to win it in battle, they just kind of dropped it.
This series has been just awesome. Many, many high points. Only one episode this season did I grade low (Yoda speak there :-) ) ... pretty impressive. I'm not going to give this one 4 stars, but 'The Jedi' was 30 minutes of the best TV/Star Wars I've seen in 30+ years.
Discovery needs more character-growth type episodes like the recent Georgiou 2-parter to come close to the levels this little series has achieved. And to think Mando's episodes on average are only about 30 minutes each.
I hope 'The Mandalorian' can keep it up now that "the kid" is not in the picture anymore.
I would have no issue going back and binging this entire series over the weekend.
Nice to see Boba Fett is getting his own series.
Glad Cara Dune is getting hers too.
The bar has been set high, it's not going to be easy to match 'The Mandalorian'.
Star Trek: Discovery: Terra Firma, Part 2 (2020)
Carl impresses...
That, my friends, was pretty damn good.
Man, they really could have epically screwed that up and they didn't. I think they played "The Guardian of Forever" very well.
Of course, this is all about Georgiou, and I like how she obviously had changed and attempted to change everything when back in the seat of power. Her moments with Saru were touching and well played by both. The timeline has changed though, our buddy Carl said that she was breathing her dying last breaths back in the mirror universe. I guess she could have survived and allowed the timeline as we know it to unfold. Maybe Carl's comments were just a metaphor.
When Georgiou "goes back" to Dannes V and we see her with Michael and Carl I thought it was all REALLY well done. My only little gripe would be is - it sounded like they didn't use the audio "I am the Guardian of Forever" from 'The City on the Edge of Forever'. Maybe they did, but it didn't sound like it to me. The exchanges between Georgiou and Michael, for the first time in this series, came off as genuine and heartfelt without one side trying to put down or shun the other. I was a little disappointed we didn't see where Georgiou ended up. We are all guessing the 23rd century with Ash and Section 31, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.
Reno makes an appearance... I wasn't sure she was there anymore. Guess she's been converting techno blah, blah. We learn that lickerish isn't food. Book uses 32nd century 'Emerald Chain'/currier technology to help Stamets and Adira link into that Kelpian ship in that nebula. Next week we'll see what they find.
I also enjoyed the meeting between ADM Vance and Saru at the end of the episode. Vance called Saru out on hold back information. I'm glad this was said and while Saru didn't really own up to being nefarious about it, I think he understood he was in error.
Everyone toasting the loss of a friend was also done well, even Michael.
I thought this was an outstanding Star Trek episode, not just Discovery. I honestly didn't think they could pull off the Carl thing, but they did. I also thought the Georgiou scenario had to somehow link to The Burn, but I'm glad it didn't.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 15: The Believer (2020)
The kid means more to me than you know...
I so enjoy this series.
Bill Burr does pretty damn good in the acting department. This is his second go-around in 'The Mandalorian' and he's nailed it both times. Particularly good in this one.
This series takes a standard shoot'em up "train robbery" show and makes it engaging.
I like every one of these damn characters!
Mando loses his armor for Stormtrooper get-up and I think he actually forgot he didn't have it on in his first go at the pirates. He got hit in the left arm and I felt like it said "damn!!!" But then he figured it out and show some serious hand-to-hand fighting skills.
What a pair Cara and Fennec are... hot and bad as hell. :omg:
So what new toy are we going to see from Boba Fett next week? That depth-charge thingy was pretty effective. Just love his ship and we got to see how it's functional this time from the inside. Pretty cool.
Speaking of Boba Fett, looks like he got a serious tune-up with his armor... did I miss something? When did this happen?
Loved Mando's little speech to Gideon... I think he should have ended it with... "I'm coming".
You know, I'm glad Mando and Boba Fett didn't fight, I much prefer rooting for both of them.
One episode to wrap it all up... I'll be bummed with no more Mando for awhile.
At least we get a season 4.
Star Trek: Discovery: Terra Firma, Part 1 (2020)
Carl...
So, how many folks here thought a Keplian ship was going to be in that nebula and sending a distress call? HAHA.... not me for sure.
While Michelle Yeoh gets more to work with in this episode than she has had the entire series (and she does really well). But this episode had some head-scratchers for sure.
To start with, I was a little disappointed that "the glasses" didn't have something to do with all this. So Culber calls upon Kovich for assistance and he can't help and thinks no one can. We learn that the time jump in concert with Georgiou's dimension (universe) jump is something that can't be recovered from. Her molecules are striving to return. Then Culber queries the computer (and sphere data) for a solution and boom, it provides one. 5% if she goes, 0% if she stays.
Headscratcher #1 - what exactly WAS the solution? What are they supposed to be looking for on the planet? What exactly gives her a 5% chance to live? Does the computer know Carl?
Saru brings this to ADM Vance. Sending her down to Danes V seems to be the only chance she has. Saru says Discovery can't go because of a pending "military exercise" scheduled to be conducted by The Emerald Chain. In not so much of a surprise, ADM Vance agrees to the trip... provided CDR Burnham answers a question... he brings up that Michael was unable to open the airlock and space Arium and Vance want to know if Michael will be able to let Georgiou go if this doesn't work.
Headscratcher #2 - What frakin difference does it make? Are you saying Discovery can't go on this mission if Michael can't "let her go"?
Of course, we get a dramatic Michael growth moment. She has learned from her inability to "make the hard call" and that will never happen again.
Headscratcher #3 - I'm guessing that question is the only reason Michael is present at this meeting. Where is our #1? ...
The ADM and Saru then converse after everyone left. I thought this exchange was a very good one. Giving Saru a reason why he overrode his decision was good and the reason he gave was even better.
Georgiou is letting off stress by hitting a punching bag when Michael brings her the news. All she wants Michael to do is kill her. I thought they missed an opportunity to include a Suus Mahna evasive technique here. More whispering from Michael. Georgiou decides to go. Pretty good scene aside from the whispering.
Black Alert, they arrive and Saru and Tilly show up to send them off. Then...
Headscratcher #4 - Saru tells Georgiou that he has learned as much from her as he did from Philippa (prime universe). Good lord, Captain Georgiou picked him up from seaweed duty on his planet, got him into SFA, and nurtured his entire career through the rank of Commander. That's got to be at least 20 years...
Of course, the recently food-covered Tilly has to give her a hug. Which visibly affects Georgiou.
Michael and Georgiou beam down to the planet (where the computer indicated) then the computer indicates they have to head in a specific direction. Not sure why the computer couldn't have just put them down where they needed to go. I guess we needed time for them to walk and talk. That scene reminded me of the walk and talk we got from Captain Georgiou and Michael in the opening scene of Discovery, albeit on a snow-covered planet instead of sand. I was half-waiting for an areal shot of a Star Fleet comm badge here.
Stamets and Adira figure out the message and Stamets tells her to go find Saru. Of course, we must have a Stamets/Adira moment concerning Gray... I thought Adira's performance here was her worst to date. Not that it was really bad, I guess she had set the bar pretty high.
Headscratcher #5 - Go find him? Don't we have these things called comm badges?
Then we get Book meeting up with Saru and Book states his intentions of wanting to stay on Discovery. Saru basically tells him to review protocols and wait for a moment to prove himself...
Headscratcher #6 - Saru refers to these protocols as "United Federation of Planets" protocols.... what happened to "Star Fleet"? This has happened quite a bit.
Michael and Georgiou stop and we meet "Carl". Probably my favorite part of this episode and sure to spawn many theories as to what the hell Carl is. I was immediately getting a 'Deathwish' type "Q" vibe with him and his newspaper and door, but I can't figure out why "Q" would be involved in this at all. Unless this is some kind of moment where he's leading them back to what really caused the Burn and how to fix it maybe? Our time with Carl was quite mysterious, humorous, and enjoyable. One key point (maybe) is that when Georgiou is hit with another "episode", Carl states "it's not my work you're seeing here". Georgiou decided she's taking this opportunity and going through the door. Kind of weird that Michael didn't go with her? ... or even volunteer to go with her?
Georgiou's best line of the series? "God.. Michael, learn to shut the hell up?"
... and BOOM... Georgiou is now Empress Georgiou and in a time in her universe, BEFORE Michael is killed and Lorca attempts to replace her. I have to say, this really piqued my interest. I can understand going back to her universe as a remedy for her ills, but why at this time? Is this all going to tie together or are we here just because we can be? Georgiou is bound and determined to change history because she already knows what's going to happen. She's going to save Michael!
Without going into the whole drama of what unfolded in the Mirror U, I'll just highlight a couple of points. SMG plays a pretty good badass, Stamets dies again (lol), Owosekun ROCKS as a bass ass, and Tilly is a much better "Captain Killy" than she was in season 1. The entire set/costumes are done to the hilt. Michael is caught and instead of being killed by Georgiou, she was taken off to the agonizer... (muahahaha). Everything in this setting is done very well IMO.
Now Saru learns that the signal is coming from a Kelpian ship sent to the nebula to investigate a dilithium nursery. The message is over 100 years old and estimated to be a few years before the burn. Saru decides to gain more information before telling Vance and Stamets and Tilly think they can breach their computer. Not sure if this decision is prudent, or because Saru feels the need to protect the Kelpians. It was kind of weird that Tilly asked Saru if she should brief Vance.... why wouldn't Saru do that?
I'm guessing how fondly we look back on this episode will be determined by how things turn out next week. Is this all just for fun or is there a means to this madness that is smart and links to "The Burn'? I guess we'll find out.
Carl ... I just can't figure him out... I can't figure out how Q could fit in, but that's the vibe I got... this doesn't seem to be anything like the time travel thing we saw in 'The City on the Edge of Forever" or the "Portal" we saw in 'The Last Outpost' or might it be Iconian related? Sure will be interesting to find out.
Star Trek: Discovery: The Sanctuary (2020)
Sea Locusts and the "Emerald Chain"
Well, this was interesting.
I enjoyed the Culber/Georgiou exchanges... from the Culber point of view. He is my Garak of Discovery. Every scene he is in is better because he is in it. He never backs down to her. I'm totally tired of the asinine quips and barbs that Georgiou keeps spouting out. The writing here is tiresome and Yeoh can't deliver them. Thank goodness we are going to get to the bottom of this next episode. I'm hoping Phillipa will break and become more like Captain Philippa Georgiou as a result of all this. She is dying I guess. I'm sticking with my "it's the sunglasses" prediction.
Saru and Tilly trying to figure out "his" execute command was sort of funny. This was a good Tilly performance. That still doesn't change the fact that she in no way should be filling the #1 position.
I'm a Book fan, so I was going to enjoy this at some level, but I had to watch the damn thing twice to figure out what the real dilemma was on the planet. The actor that played his "brother" was horrible. The fight scenes on the planet seemed forced and not very well choreographed.
Osyraa seems menacing enough, I just wish we knew more about the "Emerald Chain". Vance has made the point they are bad, but that's about it. I'm not a fan of the Orion make-up. I much prefer the Orions from Enterprise. The only thing we really got out of this was that they are running out of dilithium.
Saru's plan and decisions on the bridge were fine. At some point he is going to have to stop explaining himself to the bridge crew.
I guess this is Detmer's "I'm fine now" episode. Nice to see her be confident in her actions although going to manual to maneuver at those speeds and close proximity is stretching it. I found the space fight with the cruiser hard to follow visually. At times it was good and others just a meaningless blur. Boy, Books ship packs a lot of firepower... that doesn't bode well for an indicator of how strong the chain is. This battle scene reminded me of the Millennial Falcon. (can't remember which movie)
I loved Saru's comment to Osyraa... "Seems your ship has been damaged..." haha.
I really didn't feel anything between Book and Michael in this episode. They tried to sell it a couple of times but it didn't work for me. I didn't think SMG's performance was very impressive here either.
I really love Adira. I think the actress is really performing well and giving us a very unique and wonderful character, but the "woke" writers really screwed the pooch here. "I never really felt comfortable with she/her" and then admitted she had only revealed this to Gray does nothing but reinforce exactly the opposite of what they are trying to sell. 1000 years in the future and this pronoun thing still has a stigma to it? That can only mean that "gender-neutral" is a baseless and empty claim. They aren't even smart enough to be woke correctly. Still, all the scenes with her and Stamets are very enjoyable. It will be interesting to find out why Adira isn't hearing Gray.
In the end, Discovery saves Kwejian(?) - completely putting to shame all the planet's best scientists (how long were they working on this?) by amplifying the Betizoid like "signal" created by Book and his brother. I think Saru should have had to ask the computer for a solution here and we should have gotten another computer glitch (sphere data) with a solution. (the fix was too easy) I'm not even really sure what the solution was. They convinced the sea locust to go out to sea, but what's keeping them from returning to land? I don't know.
"The Burn" progress was made. We now know where it originated. Our "tune" comes into play again and I guess we'll see where this leads next episode. I don't have any guesses on this one.
A filler episode I know, but not Discovery's finest moment. Not horrible, but not good either.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 13: The Jedi (2020)
The best Star Wars production since The Empire Strike back!
This series is going to make me a Star Wars nut. Grogu!!
IMO opinion, this was the best episode of 'The Mandalorian' yet!!
Rosario Dawson was frakin OUTSTANDING as Ahsoka! Really, she should have played Michael Burnham (Star Trek Discovery) like was initially planned. She has more acting prowess in her pinky than SMG has in her whole body.
I haven't seen all of 'The Clone Wars' but I remember her.
I don't know all the players, like who she was looking for and all that but man, this episode had me gripped for the entire 31 minutes. Everything was fantastic. The pace, the acting, scenery, the fighting... all of it.
Just fantastic!
