The Dam Busters (1955)
Excellent movie.
Currently, mid 2013, it is the seventieth anniversary of the operation. As is well known, a number of Australians were part of it. I first read the Paul Brickhill book when I was in the RAAF (Australian, of course - as was Paul himself) when it was first published. I could not put it down. Later I read the book 'Enemy Coast Ahead', written by Guy Gibson himself, in his compulsory 'break from operations' I have been a devotee ever since. I think the movie is excellent. (It should not be 'superseded' by a later style production. In respect.) I have so much interest that when I did a self-drive tour around Europe some time ago I HAD to visit the grave of Guy Gibson and his navigator who perished also in the crashed Mosquito. They were buried, identity unknown, near the small Dutch town of Steenbergen, by the local populace - with the approval of the occupying German authorities. They were later re-interred at the nearby War Graves Commission cemetery. (I spoke to an elderly gentleman there whose brother had been part of that original activity.) It gave me a feeling of privilege to stand next to their final resting place. My pictures and video clip are up on VirtualTourist.com The town itself has much of itself given over to a tribute to those brave men. One casualty came from a Melbourne suburb close to my location. Flt/Lt Barlow. People of today cannot make a proper judgement on events of that time. This is normal in many aspects of human behaviour.
The Riddle of the Stinson (1988)
Search for copy.
Hulo all. I would like to see this movie but I cannot obtain a copy. Can anyone help. I have tried various searches for this Kennedy/Miller production with no success. It may be that it has been deliberately pulled "out of circulation" here for legal reasons. The star is Jack Thompson who has made some very good films in his time. We recently saw a TV documentary update on the Stinson crash which provoked much interest in the subject.I am trying to view a number of Australian aircraft disasters and this one stands out. I was recently "on the spot" of a RAAF/citizen deaths disaster of 1955 on the "Main Range" mountains of south east Queensland not too far from the Stinson crash much earlier. ( Now in June 2005 we have just seen the passing of Graham Kennedy, a truly wonderful personality of Australian TV and films and was a co-producer of this film and many others.) Thanks. Laurie.
