Scandal (2012)
Entertaining.
I was waiting for my series, the wait was (is) long so I decided to give this one a try. The story seemed recurrent, the cover image is all but amazing and the cast was, well...awkward.
So why am I watching? Why should you watch?
- The cast was actually a good surprise! The team lead by Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) is rather amusing with a "plus one" for Mr. Columbus Short as Harrison Wright.
- The scandals give us an entertaining insight on what may happen inside the White House, it's correlations with the American voters and the dirt existing in the house of the "leader of the free world".
- The pace is good, not extraordinary but better than most series of this kind. It makes you think at the same speed of the characters which is rather interesting considering the fact that it goes quite fast.
Now, why is it a 7/10 and not a 9/10?
- They talk way to fast, as if they are running a marathon in each episode. I understand it is meant to give the impression of how fast things change and how fast you need to act / adapt when working side-by- side the the White House. Not needed though, 2/3 of the talking pace would have been enough.
- The story core started in one side (fixing things) and soon enough Shonda Rhimes understood the series had so much more to give. What happens? We don't really know if Olivia is on the business of fixing things or in the business of being fixed.
- Obvious. Too transparent. You will be able to create your own fantasies in your head and actually be right. Don't expect to be amazed by the changes / turns in the story.
So overall?
Watch it... While you wait for the new season of Homeland or the new episode of Breaking Bad.
Breaking Bad (2008)
Epic series...
As a convicted cinephile, as someone who loves the 7th art and and treats cinema as a part time job I would never expect to be doing my first IMDb review on a series. Then again, for me, this levels up to Tarantino's Pulp Fiction or even Francis Ford Coppola's Godfather.
This is an astonishing series, by far the best drama ever created by the industry. The pace is absolutely breathtaking, the plot thickens episode after episode and the characters' magnetism is simply extraordinary, as if each of them was "handcrafted" to please those who love cinema. Bryan Cranston was apparently not the first choice for the paper but he fits like a glove in the different stages of Walter White. Aaron Paul had to have been a Jesse Pinkman in another life seeing the way he gets inside his own character. Anna Gunn, as Skyler, makes you change your feelings towards her character, from love to hate, numerous times during the series. RJ Mitte turns an ordinary "it's just the kid" character into a monumental performance during his 5 seasons as Walter Jr. Also a quick word for Giancarlo "Gus Fring" Esposito, bow down ladies and gentlemen for he is, in absence of proper words, splendid.
Do not, in any case, leave this series unseen, you will be missing the most pure (I dare to say beautiful) drama / crime ever. A huge "Thank You" to Vince Gilligan for bringing us this amazing methamphetamine rush.
Hearts of Stone (1988)
Emotive movie to say the least!
When I first saw it I was zapping through cable channels searching for something interesting to see, and when I stopped at the beginning of Herts of Stone, I "glued" ever since the first moment! It is a story of 2 rival gangs settling a dispute by playing Russian roulette between the senior members of the 2 factions. The movie (short) goes shot after shot after shot and every time you see one of the black guys pointing a gun to his head all you can think of is if that is the one that carries the bullet inside the chamber! It doesn't take much more than 30 minutes to find out what happens at the end but every second between pulling the trigger and feeling the relief when the chamber is empty and the despair of the other person knowing that his odds of dieing are increased are simply breathtaking! I don't know if you have seen "The Deer Hunter" and the part where Christopher Walken and Robert De Niro play Russian roulette to amuse the Vietnamits but for those of you who have and felt the rush of that scene, believe me, "Hearts of Stone" is by far more emotive!
