Palm Royale (2024– )

Boring bore bore bore
21 March 2024
I was so excited for this but couldn't make it to the end of the first episode. I didn't care at all what happened to those people. The ads looked good; the show didn't live up to it. Maybe I'm being melodramatic in reviewing it after watching only three quarters of one episode, but if a show doesn't grip you in one episode, how do you bring yourself to watch the rest of them? I've tried that route before and became trapped watching laughless hours of the new Night Court or that show The Neoghborhood, which is for some unknown reason in its 5th season I think??? But Palm Royale probably won't be getting that treatment from me.

Sweet movie!
28 September 2023
Nothing romcom about this. It was a very simple story, not a long movie, and it gave me the good feels. Sometimes I watch a romantic movie and I get the sads. This time I felt hopeful. The leads were so good. Haley Lu can often seem a little wooden, but after watching her in this, it seems more like she's being very relaxed about acting, letting it happen, instead of hamming it up like some do. Both of them are too old to have been playing such young people, and they looked it, so the only real criticism I've got is that the writer should have just made them older. It would have had zero effect on the story. Also loved the Shakespeare scene. This was a really nice feel-good movie, even with some of the more depressing moments. And I loved seeing Jameela Jamil on the screen. She always gives me a smile.

Standalone episode - nah
2 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Some shows (Mythic Quest) can do standalone episodes. This one should not have tried. Dorothy episodes are usually boring anyway, lacking humor, too, but this one is missing the cast, and the cast is what we love about Doom Patrol. Sure, Candlemaker is back, and the drag queens are great, but other than that, it's just like wait wait wait wait wait till the regular cast enters the picture. Fun part: recognizing Madeline Zima, child star of The Nanny, because somehow no matter how old she gets, her face doesn't change. But that was it. The drama is meh. Obviously I see the allegory, but it's still ehhhhhh. I'd rather have the cast back.

What just happened
10 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
At first you think it's a movie about the moon falling apart. No, you're wrong. Then you think it's a movie about aliens. No, that's also wrong. Then you find out it's a movie about AI. Oh, and also the stupidest conspiracy theory I've ever heard about anything is true (in the movie, only, praise the lord not literally true IRL), the moon is a structure. And humans seeded the earth eons ago, as we went extinct, with our dna in the hopes that humans would come back. Bad writing. Bad bad bad. Bad acting, even though Patrick Wilson is generally a god. Halle Berry phoned it in. So bad. What a dumb dumb dumb movie. I'm so disappointed.

Rewatched for the first time in over 20 years
28 July 2022
Wow, it still hit me in that teenage rebel feels. I was worried that now as a parent of a high schooler myself I wouldn't be able to identify with the kids in this one anymore (it's happened to me before with old movies I loved in the 90s, sadly) but no, I'm a Gen-Xer for life, and Pump Up the Volume and its soundtrack still got me sitting up and paying attention. I loved it. It's not streaming on any service I can find, but it is online - you'll need a VPN to play it, though.

I liked the acting buuuuttt...

If I hadn't read the book synopsis around episode 3, I would never have understood what was happening. I feel like we needed a lot more exposition. Just finished the series yesterday and was still a little lost. Off to read the book now!

Negative self talk takes up too much time
19 June 2021
I'd like to watch the story, but I keep getting sidetracked by the crazy amounts of negative self talk. It's too much - and it could be triggering to some. I want to know where the plot is going, but wait, first I have to hear her call herself fat and unworthy again. And again. And again. It got old really fast.

Just pretend it's a cartoon
13 April 2021
The first hour isn't the worst. I had to shut off McCarthy's last move - super genius? - 10 minutes in because it was intolerable, but I did giggle out loud a bit at this one. It's been a long time since she made me laugh. Watch this for the 1980s crab dance. Then feel free to shut it off. It was weird, but weird in a way that if it were a cartoon, like Futurama or The Simpsons (first 10 seasons) you'd laugh. Pretend it's a cartoon.

Unpopular opinion
14 January 2021
I hated this movie when I was a kid and I hated it today when I saw it for the first time in 30 years. Normally I love Bill Murray. Maybe I am too much like Leo, though, because I couldn't find any charm in the guy. I hate his stupid family for being duped, I hate the townspeople for being duped, and I hate the writers for giving Bob agoraphobia in NY, but somehow he's fine wandering around New Hampshire. I hate this movie. I thought after 30 years, I'd be in a different frame of mind and ready to appreciate it, but nope. Call me Leo.

On episode 3 and it's intriguing
16 July 2020
I read the book 20+ years ago, so I didn't totally remember the plot and I can't speak to whether or not the show follows the book plot. I'm sure there's more drama and violence in this show to capture a modern audience's attention. So far it's pretty good! I think when you watch sci-fi, you have to disengage from reality a little bit, sit with the weirdness and discomfort of things different from our familiar world. This world is in the 2500s, a time we can't actually imagine any more than people 500 years ago could imagine 2020 (or covid, but I digress). Obviously people are going to complain, because everyone's a critic and people hate it when you mess with classics, but you can't please everyone. Right now some of the other available shows to watch are a reboot of Unsolved Mysteries or I don't know, Fuller House, just some real schlock. I chose well. This is good. I'm into it.

Idc about the show. Only here to complain about cinematography

Whoever is in charge must've read an article about turquoise/orange film. The color in every episode is insanely distracting. Skin is orange, walls are turquoise. It's awful.

Great cast. Truly. Insipid, terrible plot lines. I can't like this show. I want to. It's terrible.
