Stars at Noon (2022)
Well shot... And that's all...
I don't think that the acting is bad in this movie. But there's so little to play. The plot and the story are too thin, especially for an 2 hours and 17 minutes movie. It is clear that Claire Denis focused on the feeling of waiting to make it feel to the viewers. But this feeling can't be the main (only ?) subject of a movie, not directed like this anyway. And it seems crazy that a such movie can win a prize in Cannes... It is not the best of Claire Denis, to say the least. And the shoot during the pandemic cannot - and shouldn't - be an explanation of the very existence of this movie. As others, the French cinema (I'm French) need real fresh and solid stories ... This is not the case here.
Emily in Paris (2020)
viewable... ...But a collection of clichés !
And the first cliché of all, it's the main character: enthusiastic, who don't know people and language but make love with almost every boy she has met (But I guess this last one is a Darren Starr trademark). Of course, there's a lot more clichés about France : all buildings are from Haussmann era, people arrive so late at work and it's so hard to fire them (believe me, it's not).
Apart these points (but these are majors concerns) or maybe because of it, this show is viewable, but the action didn't make you holding your breath...
Les traducteurs (2019)
The story is good, the cast too, but...
There's a lot of good things in this movie... But the direction (and even the scenario's writing) lack of finition. Is it a question of budget (this one seem low, even with the standards of an european movie)? Maybe. In some years, we will see the US remake of this movie and it will be a landmark in cinema history...Who knows ?
