Journeyman (2007)
Selling DVDs of this wonderful show is an insult to loyal viewers who needed more
Journeyman was one of the best new shows I've seen in a LONG while. I enjoy Chuck (from the new show crop that season), but it can't touch the quality of this show. It's an insult to the loyal fans to pull the plug on such a great show and then expect to capitalize on our loyalty by releasing it as a DVD. Don't insult us by ripping such a great plot from our very hands and then hoping to console us by taking our money on reruns.
From the very beginning, I worried this would be a Quantum Leap rip off. However, they took the concept of "time travel" to a whole, new level. Kevin McKidd and his acting skills made such a fan out of me. Each week, you just wonder what's happening next while you sat on the edge of your seat. Furthermore, I loved how they teased us with clues to the answers around how his character ended up in such a "predicament." The support cast was wonderful too.
It's just a shame that shows such as American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, Dancing with the Stars can last forever, yet a show like Journeyman doesn't have a chance. The time a network spends revamping TRUE classic TV such as Bionic Woman or Knight Rider, they could invest money in making a fresh new show even better.
I realize it's all about the all, mighty dollar. However, I really wished they had given this one a chance and perhaps given it a better time slot so many, more people could enjoy this show.
I will make one comment for the creative genius of Kevin Falls. I loved how he kept viewers in the loop of the fate of this show. I also appreciated how he and his wonderful staff gave this show a proper ending. For those of you who may have watched the CBS show, Vanished, you can understand how sad it was to watch a show with great potential go to waste when the creators realized it would be cut. They went on to kill the lead actor (the wonderful Gale Harold) in the middle of the season (OMG, can't imagine losing Kevin McKidd) and left more holes than a slice of Swiss cheese, which lends to a total lack of respect for loyal viewers.
So while the show got cancelled, I am really happy they gave us a respectable ending. I've seen the opposite, and man does it hurt!
Now, I am unsure who gets the money should Journeyman go to DVD, but I put my bets that NBC is in there somewhere. I simply refuse to give them one red cent.
R.I.P Journeyman and Jericho...
Soul Food (2000)
Preferred Show Over the Movie
This was a great adaptation of the film. I honestly preferred the show over the movie, but I am sure this is because it provides depth considering it wasn't lumped into a two hour movie.
The key actors were all great; however, it's a bit disconcerting that you don't see much of these guys in other roles. They've all done great things since the show, but nothing noticeable.
I loved this show because it helped me learn what it takes to be a real black family, through the good and the bad. It also helped me understand the trials of a marriage and what it takes to make it work, even when times become a challenge.
For once, our community had a true, Black drama that showed us in a positive light. Positive doesn't always equate to white collar, either. For example, Lem's persistence to make something of his life for his wife and son was so inspiring. He nearly gave up in the end, but it was family that brought him back to his feet.
I also loved how the character's were so entrepreneurial. With Bird's shop, Maxine's counseling center, Kenney's tow truck service and Lem's store, they all had an opportunity to make there aspirations come true.
As for Terry, I loved how she represented the struggles of some professional black women. The women who are really focused on career. The women who are the first generation college grads, let alone post-graduate grads. The women who are the breadwinners of their family. And the women who the family depends on the most. She seemed to have such a huge internal struggle. But, I loved how she dealt with it, yet was able to let go in the end. She finally was able to love herself and allow herself to be loved. She had her moments where you just wanted to strangle her, but her character remained relatable.
Damon brought a different edge of drama as he brought the struggles that many Americans endure. He just couldn't seem to catch a break! As for Ahmad, I loved his narration. It was so interesting to see him become a teenager and a young, admirable Black man.
This show was great!
Vanished (2006)
Did anyone see the last episode of Vanished?
I usually find a bright side to everything, but am I the only one who thought the last episode sucked? I HONESTLY began to think, "surely this isn't the last episode..." The ending was horrendous! I have never seen anything that left so many open holes...
So the lady goes back to her old beau never knowing that her husband remained madly in love with her and did everything he could to get her back? The Senator never finds out it was HIS daughter that was boinking Judge Rainer? No one finds out who the traitor was? I mean the list goes on AND on!!! I was upset that they let Gale Harold go yet I stuck with it. However, this simply takes the cake...
