Confusing and a little stupid
4 September 2023
Maybe it's just me, but I got lost as soon as the other dimension or whatever kicked in. It just didn't make any sense to me, And up to that point, the story did not engage me - the frantic goings-on at a family-run laundromat, and an IRS audit conducted by a character played by Jamie Lee Curtis made to look frumpier than ever. I really didn't care for the characters, and I figured out pretty quickly that I didn't care what was happening to the lead actor; thus, my wife and I agreed we needed to find something else to watch. Can't figure out why this was a best picture nominee: perhaps it's because The Academy now nominates more that just five motion pictures each year. As a result, they dig deeper in the barrel and dredge out a few iffy choices. This definitely is one of those.

This one, and "Lethal Weapon": Great Christmas fun!
25 December 2018
One of the two best action movies ever! And they are flavored by the holiday theme. No more to say, except if you've never seen it, do it! Do it now!

Flawed, but darn great fun!

Is this a perfect movie? Heck, no! But I'm not going to blow my or your time telling you what the issues are. You decide. All I know is, I left the theater today totally happy and still singing. Not all songs are former ABBA hits, but they serve the story and are totally listenable on their own. Lily James is a delight as the youthful, adventurous Donna, and Amanda Seyfried matures convincingly into the owner of the remodeled Hotel Bella Donna. Both are great singers who lift the film with voices that deliver both exuberance or poignancy as required. There are subtle and overt nods to the original, especially in tiny bits of dialogue. Anyway, my wife and I totally loved it, and will likely use our MoviePasses to see it again.

Never really got started

Hard to believe three perfectly capable actors signed on for this project. Did they not read the script? We're they just in it for the paycheck. There simply is nothing about this film that makes it worth watching (although I did). Poorly acted, miserably directed, badly written. Just. Stay. Away.

A true story...made truly badly
3 July 2018
Everything about this movie says "amateur time." Bad script, middle school acting, horrible direction. It's like the writer/director got his buddies together and said, Hey, gang! Let's make a movie! The director's mom must have sewn the costumes, while Uncle Gus built the sets. I only watched out because of my interest in Disney, and I'm assuming the basic story line is based on Disney's early years. But It was painful to watch. Sorry, Armando, but I can't imagine why anyone would have underwritten this "masterpiece."

Oh, Moses, Moses!

In the theater when I was around 9 or 10, this was a grand visual and aural treat, complete with an intermission and about 10 minutes of credits at the start of the movie. Imagine that. Now, on a 65 inch flat-screen TV and with decent home sound system, it still holds up pretty well. (Just saw it again at Easter.) Sure, the acting is...well...it's very obvious acting. Over-the-top, a bit cartoonish in the poses and facial expressions. But that's how they made movies in the 1950's. They even got awards for these efforts. Oh, and some of the special effects are about as true as some of the computer-generated Junk today. Marvel and DC have gotten carried away, I think, and I can't help but see it all as a big cartoon (which these movies are.) But again, in the mid 50's, the sea parting, the river's waters turning to blood, the staffs becoming serpents: eye-opening stuff to a young family. Required viewing.

Unrealistic, sure, but then so's Captain America.

Warning: Spoilers
If I want realism, I watch the news, although apparently quite a bit of that is fake, too. I just like movies where the bad guys get it in the end. And in this one, the everyday waitress takes on greedy, stupid kidnappers who snatch her son. That's all you need to know. Grab some snacks, enjoy the ride, be satisfied. I was. (I guess there is a spoiler here, but really, you could have written this yourself.)

So much talent, such fine performances, so very little to care about.
16 May 2013
I watch movies and TV for, really, one reason: to be entertained, even if it's only for the duration of the program. With this motion picture, which features fine actors in excellent performances, I simply felt the life-force bleeding from me as I sat and watched and prayed something would happen. Nothing did. Apparently, I'm not intelligent or sophisticated enough to appreciate the depth of the story and artistry of the direction. But, bottom-line, a lousy movie is still a lousy movie, no matter how big the screen is. In this case, 55 inches of flat screen was filled with an even flatter motion-picture experience. You would do well not only to skip this one, but also to stay far, far away from it. And to be honest, my wife and I agreed about 40 minutes into it, that we could not endure whatever minutes were to follow. We don't care how it ends cause we didn't care how it started or what happened in between. Redbox can keep my $1.20, but I want my 40 minutes back.
