Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
Ignore the precious naysayers! Just sit back and enjoy
After the disappointment and huge misstep that was The Book of Boba Fett I was a bit worried about how things would turn out for dear old - or young - Obi Wan....but wow, there was no need, this is really rather super.
In his years away from the role, Ewan McGregor has really grown into the role, he smashes it out of the park here. A wonderful performance. Moses Ingram does almost as good a job with Third Sister Reva - a worthy addition to the Star Wars galaxy.
There are a couple of minor misteps visually, particularly in ep2 which veers a little to far towards comic strip cyberpunk on occasion, otherwise its visually gorgeous.
Deborah Chow does a fine job in the directing role, the pacing is fine and eah episode so far has left me desperate for the next one.
I've got no time for the Star Wars hardcore fans review bombing this just because someone has dared do something different to what they believe should be done - go be a film maker, script writer or whatever, until then just sit back and enjoy this for what it is.
And just to clarify, I was there in 77 been there from the start of Star Wars, and just to put the cat well and truly amongst the hardcore pigeons, I also
- prefer ROTJ to ESB
- think the Ewoks are cool
- think TPM is the best of the prequels
- think ROTS is an abomination
- think Darth Maul is the best villain of all
- couldn't give a toss about midichlorians
- think Rogue One is absolutely the best Star Wars film.
The Chris and Rosie Ramsey Show (2021)
Stick to the podcast
A good podcast doesn't necessarily translate to TV, that's the case here unfortunately.
All a bit shouty, they're ramping up the gross as each episode passes which is a clear sign of desperation. It's like being stuck at a party with some people who are just 'a bit much'.
Everyone in the studio seems to be having a fab time, maybe you have to be there.
Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020)
Goodwill isn't quite enough
Clearly made with a huge amount of love and affection, this delivers a decent amount of laughs and gentle smile throughout.
Unfortunately, much like the competition itself, its overlong. There isn't enough here to fill the 2 hour+ run time without it feeling like a bit of a stretch, it's a pity as at 85/90 minutes this could have been a smash.
The evident enthusiasm of everyone involved builds enough goodwill for a mark slightly above average but it's hard to escape the feeling that it could, and probably should, have been better.
Tiger King (2020)
Huh?
I must be missing something....
This was a real struggle to get through. Not one character elicits one iota of sympathy, the story is muddled, the film making amatuerish in the extreme but its worst crime is that its just so incredibly dull....
Theres maybe a decent 90 minute documentary hiding in here somewhere but as it is? Its just an overlong & boring mess.
The Louis Theroux doc is a better watch
