More than a movie, a burning epic ode to cinema and storytelling as a whole
22 May 2024
High-octane fresco of the greatest mastery that is, or if a blend of punk and heavy metal had a visual language in order to tell you and show you an initiatory journey of the most explosive dramaturgy.

The storytelling is a pure never ending rollercoaster of the highest intensity, with at the same time, a lot of emotional depth and philosophical layers...

Anya Taylor-Joy as always kills it and takes over the frame with depth and silent strength... The evolution of Furiosa throughout the story is quite a bliss to experience and witness. From a survivor with a dream, to a chameleon with a spirit of vengeance, to a leader for the sake of reigning in order to live on and eventually make this broken dream into something real again (?) Chris Hemsworth's character of Dementus is the perfect mirror to Furiosa's dark side while he is the very instigator of this "Imperator" in the making.

Important to mention that, even if Anya Taylor-Joy is technically the lead role of this movie, the fact is that the majority of the lines of the movie are majestically served by a Chris Hemsworth at the top of his game ! I don't know if it's Oscar worthy, but he for sure delivered a truly great performance from beginning to end (and what a mesmerizing ending that invites you to reflection).

The whole piece is -as expected- highly flattering for your very eyes, while your heart rate is very probably gonna reach some dragster type of speed !... The settings, like in Fury Road, are dirty & decayed while hitting you with rich rusty shades of orange, red and yellow....and it's heavy on metal of course ! Metal, gasoline and...adrenaline. The richness of the content of the film expands in many ways the lore of Mad Max, adding a lot of new tasty details that upgrade this fictional world and give it all even more meaning and importance.

To me, beyond the absolutely delightful photography of the movie and sheer mastery in the art of staging and framing action & characters... The big X Factor and bonus that amplifies the whole experience of the movie is the powerful humane vibrance at its core... It gives this uncommon movie an extra flavor that takes it up a notch and makes it a true masterpiece (but yeah, the extremely fine photography and crazy epic action makes it all otherworldly catchy, ngl) ; that's just like nothing else you've ever seen.

An intense journey that takes you by the guts...
29 February 2024
When Part One took your eyes and marveled your every sense with sheer power, Part Two takes you by the guts and makes your heart vibrate intensely !

Similarly to the first one, the lore and visuals are purely stunning and mesmerizing to the infinite... The way all the characters are depicted and developed is masterfully efficient...

Never a movie had given so much depth to such an iconic fresco that is rich of highly layered characters and storylines !... The message as well as the journey is more than rewarding on countless levels...

Definitely a true gem of cinematic art that is gonna marvel many.

Cassandra Webb's emotional and psychological journey ; not your typical superhero movie
17 February 2024
Aside from the final scene and a few moments here and there (which by the way, are very efficient, catchy, and baddass ; and make you want to have more of this "flavor"), this movie doesn't use much of the usual ingredients you find in superhero or action/adventure movies... It mainly revolves around the psychological and human journey, with an emotional growth for Cassandra & her three protégés (Julia being the most layered, sensible, and invested of the three ; Celeste being the rebel and loud one, while Anya is the smart cookie of the trio)... The strenght of the movie definitely is the evolving bond between these four women, which obviously peaks and pays off nicely during the grand finale !

What I have appreciated in this movie is how Cassandra progressively understands what's going on, her story, and how it all finds its source in the moment when she was born... And it's cool to see her embrace her powers more and more, step by step ; she grows as a person and as a superhero at the same time, because both are linked and reciprocally improve one another...

The various déjà vus and callbacks are fairly interesting to look at, and the thing is that there are several scenes (that I liked quite a bit) that focus a lot on "how it feels" in this suspended moment... And when it pays off, I think it's always nicely rewarding !

But yeah, the main problem of the film is that in different moments it feels underwhelming in comparison with the high majority or superhero movies... It is kind of uneven, the pace is a little on and off ; but at the same time the story keeps moving forward for most of the movie.

Most of the actors do a good job ; Dakota Johnson (Cassandra Webb) carries the movie pretty efficiently, Sydney Sweeney (Julia Cornwall) and Adam Scott (Ben Parker) were convincing and relatable in their roles, and Tahar Rahim (Ezekiel Sims) as well as Emma Roberts (Mary Parker) both brought a certain charisma to their part.

A nice touch is the reconstitution of the year 2003 (it's often way more complicated to re-create an era that takes place 20 years ago than it is to create an era that takes place 2 centuries ago ; simply because it's closer to us, we have a certain memory of it, but in fact it requires to work in a big quantity of small details in order to make it right) ; the soundtrack pays homage to multiple songs from 2003.

I enjoyed the story arc of the main "good guys", the few Spider-Man Easter eggs were quite tasty and cool to witness, and I personally really loved the grand finale because it's explosive and intense (visually and emotionally as well) !

In the end, this movie is more like a prequel to the bigger Spiderverse than anything else ; therefore you can be curious to see Madame Webb become like an oracle to Peter Parker, and the trio of Spider-Girls being like Spider-Aunts to him !

The problem is that this movie doesn't exactly kill it at the box office or in the ratings !

I could have gone for a 6 but I personally give it between 5 and 6 out of 10 (I went for a 5 simply because it felt closer to the movies to which I already gave a 5). But I liked it, I found it fine. I think for the most part it did fairly well what it had to do ; there just wasn't that much meat on that bone in order to consider it a very good or great one, in my humble opinion. For example (and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone on that) I really would have liked to see more of the trio of Spider-Girls in action in their suits ! Like I said, it is more like a prequel ; in many ways.

Eva Green illuminates in these dark times
17 December 2023
Once again a tremendous spectacle, served with a bunch of very fine actors ("la fine fleur" of French actors) in all their glory, who make most of the scenes of the movie a tasty delight to savour... In particular the highly charismatic Eva Green and François Civil, who both have this magnetic presence that makes you wanna follow each of their adventures (each of the moments they share is captivating)...

The staging and overall design of the movie is as majestic pleasing as in the First Part (both movies were shot at the same time) with very gorgeous framings and lightings (wonderfully mastered)... The action and stunts do the job (in spite of this recurring shaky camera), with a few cool bits (hats off to the final confrontation).

Of course the stakes -even if already pretty high at some point in the First Part- are even higher here... Numerous events in this Second Part mirror events recounted in the First Part ; the situation is pretty tight for the main players, and the whole -mysterious- intrigue gets thicker and tastier as it evolves... With Milady playing a pivotal role in everything ; even when she is not here, her shadow never is very far... But things, during the entire movie, don't really go as expected, twists after twists...

In the end, this two-parter story definitely is a pretty gem in the long history of French Cinema, because it shows the nice will to produce a pleasing cinematic piece, à la française ; but in a fashion that uses some of the welcome contempory/modern tools.

A fine and tasty adventure to watch, and potentially a Third Part to come (?)

Napoleon (2023)
9/10
Driven by his love. Dedicated to his fate.
30 November 2023
This movie in its entirety is an ode to Napoléon and his soul mate Joséphine, with a backdrop of a troubled and turbulent page in human history, and a pivotal crossroads for Europe.

...The lives of a man and a woman devoted to each other, but whose lives were irremediably (and tragically) dedicated to something greater (not just in size, but for posterity ; the proof being that 200 years later we are talking about it) : France. For 3 million soldiers, a tragic destiny... And for these two lovers whom life strives to separate, a heartbreaking outcome.

The beating heart of this story undoubtedly is this vivid, unfiltered, vibrant and deep relationship between Napoléon and Joséphine ; and it is clear that their connection went beyond the obstacles set by life and the passing of time...

Napoléon found all of his strenght and inspiration in this unconditional love link with his beloved Joséphine... He guided the people to great successes on the battlefield and helped the nation become one anew, the country paid a more than heavy tribute, whereas the emperor gave up his love life by sacrifying his heart to his belief in the salvation of his country. A country that is, in the end, his only love that is left and "still alive.".. Until he finally can join, in peace, his loved one, somewhere beyond this reality of the living.

Definitely a masterpiece of a movie. Obviously grandiose... And the two leads give such a delightful taste to every scene they share together. Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby did a fantastic job, bringing intensity, depth and lot of life to their roles... Theirs interactions just make you want more it !

The music is efficient and faithful to the French history (popular songs and classical pieces) as well as Napoléon's background (Corsican songs)... The costumes are striking, the settings pretty impressive, and Ridley Scott's mastery shines nicely in his treatment of these various battles depicted here.

A true poetic fresco from beginning... Powerful but also subtle at the same time. It turns out pretty sad and tragic, but -like Monsieur N- you eventually manage to be at peace in the end.

The Marvels (2023)

A fun adventure filled with intoxicating and delirious energy !... And with some pretty sweet emotional bits.
8 November 2023
This Marvel production is eclectic and pretty atypical, so it for sure is gonna unsettle a lot of people. But to me, it takes the cake with this will to lead the story in a nice variety of directions while pulsating with a powerful colorful energy ! It has lots of funny moments as well as a few emotional ones (that help cimenting the vibrant connection between the characters)... It's served with several cool scenes and visuals, creative fights and action, heartwarming dialogs, with also a few very serious or high stakes type of moments as well as a few quirky bits (that are for sure gonna bother certain viewers, such as some of my friends btw).

Overall a pretty unique vibe, it is an entertaining ride that doesn't shy from going in diverse creative places. It's high in colors, with an intense energy that doesn't weaken from beginning to end (the last 15-20 minutes focusing more on emotion), and the last few scenes introduce some great stuffs in a very cool way.

The power of unity and pure friendship always succeeds !

A Marvel movie that has heart, that's for sure.

"He lives with his demons, he tries to drown them in alcohol, but over time they have learned to swim".
15 April 2023
Like a metaphor to this exquisite quote from the movie, a menace from the shadows disrupts the Kingdom of France, in spite of all the efforts to maintain it afloat...

The story of The Three Musketeers has been told and retold numerous times, and this movie offers a very nicely balanced blend of tones... You feel the gravitas and heaviness of the situation, while also following our different protagonists that all bring this tasty feeling of adventure and historical fresco ; it is filled with a clever humor, powerful and intense dramatic scenes, dillemas ; espionage, conspiracies and manipulation that punctuate the story and give the film its thickness & richness ; but there also is a cute little romance that brings a sweet levity to the piece.

All of this is majestically served by a plethoric cast, the cream of French acting. They all fit their characters perfectly, and every character offers rich layers and fills certain specific archetypes useful each in the part they play for the overarching storyline... There is this greater "scheme" and at its heart there is this "hero journey"...

A storyline that's convoluted while being easy to read and process, because well built through the various steps of the evolution of the narrative.

The entire piece is beautifully staged (certain action bits might look a lil muddled/shaky here and there, but everything is prettily choreographed all along)... The grain of the image, its texture, the use of light, the textures, and the close-ups ; it all highlights the actors' performance and pleasantly contributes to our immersion into the various intrigues and themes of the story...

A last mention and praise to the music score, which is grandiose and perfectly orchestrated ; often epic, silky at times, and simply subtle when needed... Superb composition.

Overall, the quality of all the ingredients as well as the final product are excellent, and the great production value is the cherry on top of the cake.

A very good movie which won't leave you indifferent and will probably be remembered beautifully.

Great work of art.

With every movie of the saga, the stakes have risen and so did the quality.
27 March 2023
This Chapter 4 of the John Wick saga is a true masterpiece.

There is a lot to say about, but from the richness, depth and variety of the characters, to the obvious search for iconic visuals that imprint your retina to forever leave a mark in your memory... There is this lore and deep mythology, with its codes and numerous complex links... Which all make for an extremely tasty action movie, that offers martial arts and/or action scenes that are equally groundbreaking and unique in the way that it renders and impacts your experience as a movie viewer. There clearly are three-four long sequences that make you feel like you're witnessing something special... It's intense, creative, beautifully shot, nicely paced and of course perfectly staged. The photography is exquisite from beginning to end (it puts you in awe a couple of times)... And the whole piece is magnificently served by a plethoric cast of very very high quality...

It might be pure action, but like the greatest adventure-action movies in history, it has several powerful sceneries/settings/locations that obviously add-up to the fine taste the movie leaves you... Also, the few story bits that punctuate the movie are a delight that thickens the whole experience, leading the way towards some cool twists and outcomes...

Overall, a true masterpiece, for sure.

This Chapter 4 of John Wick very much places itself in the heights of Kill Bill 1&2... And might be remembered as a classic in the history of high quality action cinema.

At the end of the day, a spectacular and impactful ride, pulsating with numerous emotional bits.
11 November 2022
There's one hour / one hour and a half introducing various things, fairly interesting and nicely made, even if it might feel a little long at some point for some people... There are several majestic things here and there (settings, costumes and overall photography radiate poetry and sheer beauty), but the movie really and definitely takes off for good when it reaches its half, then it becomes extremely catchy pretty much all the time and intense in-depth... Undoubtedly mesmerizing ; emotionally, visually-wise and action-wise of course.

Gorgeous/Stunning visuals all along (even breathtaking at times), the music, the adventure as a whole, and the new characters introduced are all true strengths of the movie (alongside with the mind-blowing costume design which might very much be a no-brainer upcoming Oscar winner)...

Most definitely a slow burn (for story/lore and characters development's sake) with elongated storylines/scenes in the first half (aside from a couple of scenes), but in fact it plants many seeds and it very well pays off down the line... You are invested with pretty much every important character, which is a nice feeling obviously. And yes, again, the second half of the movie is a pure blast, in particular the last hour which is masterfully orchestrated and shines high-in-color before our very eyes !

In the end, it leaves you a very pleasant taste. A deep pleasure it is to spend time in Wakanda and Talocan, and with these truly charismatic and interesting/layered characters.

Shakespearian, dramatic...and so deep emotionally.
21 May 2022
A true masterpiece of art from beginning to end, a dramatic tale, an intense revenge story as well as an heartgrabbing love story, a tormented hero's journey but above all a particularly spiritual initiatory quest...

Multiple aspects of the movie are quite simply great, the atmosphere is very unique, the photography and colors are striking, the landscapes and settings are spectacular...

In the end, it clearly is a mythological tale of the most Shakespearian proportions, deeply moving in numerous ways and filled with several breathtaking moment...

Highly poetic and striking emotionally. There is violence indeed, but the movie rightfully is crude in its purest expression, which is justified because the world is cruel and so can be humans (especially during these ancient times), but what resonates the most in-depth is that the movie really has a lot of heart all along and until its very last frame.

A multidimensional adventure, a tragedy at heart, and a breathtaking spectacle.
4 May 2022
What a mind-blowing cinematic experience ! From beginning to end it feels like a journey in which you've been sucked into... Wow.

How not to start with talking about the entire visual splendor (and visual language) of the movie, these countless insane sequences and all the amazing creativity behind this movie... How not to talk about all these striking acting performances, with characters that all add up to the emotional impact of the story, as well as expanding the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the introduction of new characters (+ the idea of many other potential alternate versions of all characters) and innumerable dimensions/universes to discover and explore...

The story at its core is strongly emotional and it is what drives every bit of the storyline... As a spectator you are invested because you can understand the good reasons and motivations of every slightest character...

The villains of the movie mainly are all the actions and choices taken by each and every character... It's like dominos all falling before your very eyes one by one !... It is heartbreaking in multiple moments, but indeed and above all this movie has heart. And also a strong message about the path that you think you should take, but why ?... What to do and why, who to trust, what you wanna bet on or believe in, and for what ?... So yes, on certain aspects (and in multiple scenes) this movie truly feels like a tragedy ; but in the end it takes an exciting direction moving forward, with new adventures, characters, potential events and stories...

And when you think about the thousands of creative and skilled people working on such an immensely mind-blowing piece of cinema, it's crazy.

This is a wonderfully crafted masterpiece... Hats off to everyone involved in the creation of this film.

Not the best, but a truly interesting take nonetheless
31 December 2021
I really appreciate everything they tried to do and tell through this movie, all the concepts and existential questions... I enjoyed the action and visuals, I found it efficient and fairly solid. I like the design of the movie and how it looks overall.

I personally think that it's more about the experience that you take from this screening that it differs from the previous three episodes of the franchise. It might not impact you on the same levels as the three other movies do... But I'm not one of these people who think it is an unnecessary addition to the franchise and that it should be erased from the cannon of the saga, totally the opposite in fact.

I think it brings a lot to the franchise, and I think the strengths of the movie lie in what is added to the conversation around this universe and all the fascinating topics about it all. I like all of the meta elements, because it bounces between everything that you know from the lore or things that you're learning on-the-go, and links it all in a way that satisfied me quite well. I really enjoyed how all the story evolves and where it ends.

It is a weird feeling to describe this movie, because even if it feels like the weakest movie of the saga, it also feels like the one who took the most risks and tried the most to tell you a lot lot more about the lore and its pretty cool questions (outside of the box).

So yeah. I'm very happy it exists and will explore it more, because there's some interesting meat on that bone...

Peter Parker, giving it all his heart, and everything else...
15 December 2021
The first thing that comes to my mind is how prodigious the script writing is, masterfully layered, epic on countless levels, and moreover deeply emotional... Peter Parker faces extremely complex choices, going through a big number of ordeals, putting his heart in the front-line all the time... And yeah, it shows you how constantly trying to right every wrong is more than a monumental task for one sole being. Luckily, he has several wonderful supports -all along this chaotic journey- who give their heart to fill these roles in the best possible way, and that, in itself is very touching... But in this movie, the stakes resonate on a wide number of aspects, it isn't at all just about "good & bad", it's a human story (which makes it the magnificent movie that it is) and the hero at the core of all these meanders has to fully embrace his responsibilities... A true hero's journey sadly is punctuated with tragic steps that tell you how right is what you're doing. And indeed, in the end, it all takes you back to this existential question, and its heartbreaking answer : "What did it cost ?" ... "Everything."

Now on a lighter note, the easter eggs and winks to the audience, there are tons of thems and each one of them smoothly flows in the most logical & delightful way with the story (the audience cheers and applaudes on multiple occasions) ; either rewarding you in the process or planting seeds for obvious future storylines to come and develop further down the line... And again, most of these elements have an emotional impact to them, or lead you to some intriguing (and interesting) questions... What's for sure is that you go through a lot heart-grabbing moments, all along this movie... It has a lot of epicness to it, of course ; but what leaves you in awe is that the emotional aspect of all these scenes is what really leaves you blissfully happy. And when the movie's over one and for all, you can already enjoy all these clever (but numerous) little seeds, eventually evolving in new mind-blowing directions in the future...

How not to applaude this movie, from its great build-up (every character has at least one thing that makes you attached to him and his eventual outcome), the way it's navigates so well between epic sequences and dialogues that add ever more to the moving aspect of it all ; leading you to this legendary last third of the movie, in which anything is a real blast (PS : the two end credits are really worth waiting for).

I'll finish with the quality of the whole piece, from the nicely mastered staging, the pace (2h30 that flow like 1h), the obvious dedication (and passion) that's infused in every scene by the actors (but also by all the team behind the movie ; you can feel it all along) and the dialogs that are a delight... The special effects are once again amazing... The score offers several memorable pieces... Not just one of the greatest superhero movies ever, but an unforgettable movie, period.

Eternals (2021)
10/10
A tragedy, a human one, profound and in the most epic way
3 November 2021
This one-of-a-kind movie is a story like an ode to this planet, its history, but moreover the humanity, from its worst to its best aspects... And the complexity of life, whoever you are, the role we can choose or not to play... Yes, all these choices and opposite beliefs that make this world a big dramatic mess at times, but also a wonderful place that happens to generate the most magnificent things there is... And how deep, heartfelt connections are a decisive factor ; because love, in the end, is what matters and gives any life trajectory a more fulfilled feel... Even if this love takes you to your absolute demise, your existence will nonetheless have had a greater meaning and resonance with it...

The movie tackles major philosophical themes ; and through the intimacy of its diverse characters, resonates on a higher plane... Each of The Eternals live a personal tragedy and have to face their doubts, dilemmas and demons, existential questions that go way further than anyone's perception... But as a connected family at its core, they also show the most admirable and moving aspects of what it means to be alive and aware of this incredible world around us...

Probably the most gorgeous movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, virtuosically staged (congratulations to Chloe Zhao), every actor/actress fits his/her role perfectly, and they all deliver poignant performances. There are numerous deep emotional moments, in addition to all these striking epic sequences that obviously find their climax in the later parts of the movie (entwined with a heartbreaking dramaturgy that amplifies the emotional impact of it all). The score is a true gem and the entire production is a pure delight. Not a "Space Opera", but a "Mythological Opera"...

Definitely a Marvel movie that can't be compared to any other of the franchise... But from this little masterpiece of a movie, are seeds that open to numerous exciting possibilities ! Whether it is for each of The Eternals we've discovered and seen marvelously blossom all through this grand adventure ; but also for the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole and in its most extended sense !...

Dune (2021)

All strata of the human being, summed up in one masterpiece of cinema.
19 September 2021
From its most complex layers, to the simplest ones... From the most joyful or deeply human moments, to the most horrible or deeply inhuman moments. Sometimes raw and dark as life can be, sometimes wonderful and magical as life can be...

A universal saga in infinitely more ways than one... A mythology filled with values and philosophies colliding with one another... A multiplicity of beliefs, where certainties and uncertainties are entwined with one another, like two inseparable snakes seeking each other without ever finding each other...

Mystical and evanescent, as well as concrete and visceral... Dreams and premonitions, choices and actions, space and time... Or where the role that you play is written but is not, has already taken place but never will...

A cinematographic fresco that is immensely majestic and glorious like the greatest of paintings or the greatest of concertos...

... It answers everything while questioning you about everything, because it is simply giving you the pure truth.

PS : From the entire casting and their performances, to the cinematography+photography+design & visual language as a whole, to the action+choregraphy+music+costumes, the staging and overall atmosphere, the lore/world building, its entire mythology (and its codes), with countless messages and layers... Everything in this movie is pure mastery, pure genius.

An absolute masterpiece.

Poetry in motion, layered story, emotional adventure. A sparkling jewel.
1 September 2021
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a wonderful movie in so numerous ways... Visually striking, with a great mastery of the staging from beginning to end.

So much visual poetry, the legend/adventure aspect of it is really top-notch, with legends & mystical elements that grab you ever more with the story unveiling before your eyes ... The humor is very pleasant (Katy, played by Awkwafina, brought a welcome energy & heart in each of her scenes) and adds a pretty pleasant flavor to the whole adventure.

I really loved the way the characters are written, with Xu Wenwu (Tony Leung) as a complex & layered figure all along the movie... And Xialing (Shang-Chi's sister, played by Meng'er Zhang), as well as Li (their mother) are both highly enjoyable to see express themselves on-screen, they both have a lot of presence (and skills), each in their own ways.

I found the entire movie very coherent, every detail makes sense and is counter balanced in a way or another... Yes, there is a strong notion of balance (darkness & light, and so on), with a lot of messages infused in both the action & dialogs. It is an extremely entertaining movie, but I really wanted to emphasize the richness and depth of its story/mythology and characters, all connected in the most organic way.

By the way, I loved the whole Asian/Chinese myths & legends aspect of the movie, the spirit & philosophy of it all was a true delight to my eyes, with countless Sci-Fi elements entwined in it, but all smoothly integrant of this mythology... I think I probably put it in my Top 5 Marvel movies... I found the staging really majestic, from the dialog scenes to the action scenes, the humor, the flashbacks, and this new "universe" (mythology) that is presented here, it just all flows in such a delightful way from beginning to end.

Marvel Studios always are very very clever at hiring a great variety of talents, and they nailed it once again... Destin Daniel Cretton (the director of the movie) is super creative and manages to construct pretty complex scenes while always masterfully telling a story, building a deeply cohesive piece ; it's all fantasy but nonetheless feels visceral and real. This movie is another Marvel movie you often forget that it is a Marvel movie, precisely because of its powerful and so deeply captivating mythology, and this emotional weight that you can feel over the characters, it truly sets something different. It felt like I was watching a movie in the vein of certain epic Asian adventure/martial arts movies... Gotta admit it's my jam, so... In addition to the Marvel stuff, it's a very pleasant feeling.

The energy in the movie theater was fun, lots of people were excited from all these scenes that just grab you. Because yes, clearly... There is a good number of mind-blowing scenes in this incredible movie ! The photography and color treatment make the movie very striking... And like I said, certain scenes mesmerize you because of their beauty & mastery, or even their grand epicness ! At times, it feels like an epic fresco that you are contemplating.

The scene when/where the two parents meet for the first time is beyond gorgeous (the setting, the colors, the choreography, the costume design and overall design, the music & sound effects, the characters and the atmosphere as a whole) ; an absolute masterpiece of art, visually way beyond sublime, what a gift for the eyes, wow... And the 'Grand Final' is quite simply epic, emotionally grabbing, and of course stunning visually, with a flow of glorious shots that all are impressive.

A jewel.

Black Widow (2021)
8/10
Twisted Love/Family. Dark memories. New pains. Rebirth.
8 July 2021
A (tragic) 'family' story to the full extent ; as well as a dark (but entertaining) action-adventure-thriller puzzle piece to add to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

A certain amount of people think that it's useless to tell prequel (or what happened before this or that) stories when you already know how the whole thing is gonna end anyway ; in particular when it comes to stories involving heroes, because it automatically diminishes the stakes. But like the famous quotes says : "It isn't the destination that matters, but the journey". Some people might not enjoy this movie in spite of that, but the truth is that it adds a lot of layers to this mysterious Black Widow Program + everything surrounding the 'Red Room' and all these dark secret projects, with everything that it impacts on a greater scale... And it obviously adds a huge deal to Natasha Romanoff's story, her life/journey, and the human being behind the Avenger... That's the purpose of a standalone MCU movie ? Yes, and it did the job well !

Now, about the experience of the movie itself. The upset feelings between the main 'players' logically bring a lot of depth to the characters involved in this story, their complicated/messed-up relationships and how all these souls have been tormented since ages throughout all this dark journey they've had to endure... The movie solidifies Natasha's choices & trajectory since this dark past, while also healing many important wounds in the process (not just hers)... It adds tasty new characters and a whole new 'mythology' to the MCU, one that is grounded in a spy/secret world...

The way the movie is directed and cut, cleverly resonates with the specific emotions the director wants you to feel... It is well paced and well crafted in that sense, because every scene or sequence feels and looks organic with what it's telling you, you then feel like being a part of it.

The action set pieces -as always with the MCU- are high level. And as expected for a Black Widow movie, the fight scenes strike hard ! Visually, it's always very catchy, smooth and beautifully staged. You never get lost in the action because the cinematography of the whole movie is masterclass. A specific mention to the use of light and contrasts, because it just adds this delicious icing over the whole movie (certain scenes are true eye candies)... And the whole score/soundtrack must not be overlooked ; certain tracks are fantastic, powerful, epic...

A very good addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie has a lot of heart and tells a true 'self-sufficent' standalone story, while being useful to the bigger picture , it grabs you nicely from the first to the last minute and has some really strong moments. All hail to Scarlett Johansson, for everything she has brought to this character, with an obvious love, passion, and complete dedication to this role.

Cruella (2021)
9/10
Stylish. Dark. Fun. Evil. Glorious. Striking. Moving. Rock and Roll. Exhilarating. Mad.
8 July 2021
A delightful masterpiece from start to finish ! Like a dark tale that tells us the dramatic and tangled story of Estella's discovery of her true self... A complex, layered, and fascinating character in many ways...

The production value, artistic direction and photography are top notch. The language through the visual details, costumes (+hairdos, of course) and colors/tones is highly mastered. The plot is pretty clever and unveils nicely, gradually, before our very eyes... The universe & various settings play an integrant and gripping part in the movie, as well as the animals (dogs) who always bring a different note/tonality.

Emma Stone was clearly made for this role, she infuses so much energy and just brings her all into the role, whether it is as Estella or Cruella, she sews this role with a multitude of flavors and it pays off the deeper you advance into the story... Emma Thompson inhabitates her role as 'The Baroness' with so much acidity, at every moment she is corrosive towards everyone around her and her daunting ego is like a sharp blade that automatically occupies the whole space... Paul Walter Hauser's performance as Horace, is a pure delight to see, he's definitely been having a ball with everything he's had to do in this movie and it translates wonderfully every time he appears on the screen. It's ideally balanced by Joel Fry's interpretation of Jasper, who often brings more depth to the story & the relationship between the 'trio'...

I really wanted to pay homage to both the score and the soundtrack, smoothly entwined with one another and with the movie+story as a whole ; the music (as often when it's well done) is an extremely important character, certain pieces and tracks are striking ! It grabs you (as are the performances of Emma Stone and Emma Thompson)...

To finish with, I wanted to say that this movie is flamboyant ! It combines a great variety of ingredients and emotions ; and Emma Stone rocks & explodes in this role ! Devilish.

Poetic, visionary, sensible and powerful. PURE CINEMA. PURE ART (AND "HEART").
19 March 2021
A poetic, visionary, sensible and powerful piece of cinematic art. Zack Snyder's vision finally materialized and it tastes like nothing else you've seen before... Every frame of the movie is imbued with a mythical energy that grabs you from beginning to end.

Of course, if this genre of movie isn't your cup of tea and if you feel already ready to hate it, then don't waste your time & energy. Because it is a very singular piece of art that might not convince everyone, but it tells a coherent and meaningful story. Being seduced by this piece or not, it is a redundant & superficial debate in the end... What I see, hear & feel, while watching this movie, is a cinematographic piece that is true to itself. It follows a strong idea and is fuel by a lot of good feelings. Zack Snyder's immense passion for his craft resonates to the greatest extent...

What a vibrant movie ! Every character shines, everything makes sense and leads to many epic moments you could not expect ! It has very few in common with the theatrical version (aside from some specific plot points), the way the story unveils before your eyes flows smoothly and is very tasty... You have very delicate and deeply human moments, but also moments that are action-packed or even totally 'metal' !! And wow it is oh so enjoyable !! It doesn't feel like 4 hours and hour after hour there is this crescendo that leads to a finale (the last hour is pure delight, in particular the last 30~40 minutes which are a total bliss) of the most amazing proportions ! The way the action and fights are constructed is very clever and nicely entwined with the storyline, it makes every new scene more satisfying that the previous one...

These iconic heroes are baddass, yes, sure... But they all face their demons and have to step up, not simply on a physical standpoint, but moreover on a deeply emotional standpoint. They all excel and/or are demigods in what they do, but the answer is located somewhere else... And the way it all develops isn't cliché nor is the simple recipe that many finales have...

Zack Snyder has given all of his heart in order to add layers into every scene. He tells you this mythological tale with a great faith in what he obviously loves ; and like an artist-painter, he paints every frame great sense of both the details and the big picture. I've always liked and respected Zack Snyder ; but movie after movie, he proves that he is quite a genius visionary. I'm not saying he is the best (everything is subjective), but I very sincerely think that he is a complex artist, driven by powerful ideas, immensely passionate... And it shows, because he is able to combine action & emotion in the most artistic way. The photography & power of his catchy visuals mirrors the actions & choices of his characters in the most organic way. And you can see the connection he has with his actors and with everything that is going on in the frame/picture.

Also, I wanted to add that -of course- it is rewarding when have watched the other movies, but it also can be highly enjoyed as a stand-alone piece. This 2-times longer cut automatically offers a lot of elements that make the whole piece far more cohesive and satisfying on a big number of levels...

I'll finish by saying THANK YOU SIR, THANK YOU MISTER ZACK SNYDER for such a cinematic achievement... It's artsy, it has heart, the adventure keeps you on the edge of your seat, and every character serves the greater picture in the most epic way. It's a mesmerizing adventure, an emotional journey ; and once you reach the finale, you're pumped-up and it's just so good... Throughout the movie, you open your eyes over Zack Snyder's vision, and it allows you to appreciate every slightest bits or scene with a deep satisfaction. I thought it was gonna be very good, but it was impossible to foresee that it was gonna take these proportions and go in these specific direction... IT IS GREAT CINEMA. Not just blockbuster, but CINEMA in its purest form. ART.

Palm Springs (2020)
9/10
Woke up in Palm Springs... Experienced quite a quantum magic !
26 January 2021
Undoubtedly in the conversation for best movie of the year 2020, if not downright "the" best movie of 2020. Palm Springs offers from beginning to end, a unique experience, light and deep in the same time... With two mesmerizing actors whose delightful chemistry expresses itself through the multi-flavored layers of this so catchy story... A fun but meaningful journey that is, to experience this intense & emotional ride alongside these two great characters !

Andy Samberg & Cristin Milioti both offer a tremendous performance, striking and very much memorable ! And the supporting cast does a superb job ; which makes the whole piece even more enjoyable.

This is the type of movie in which you just feel good to go through each of the events that happen ; and as same as for an excellent book or comic book, you quite simply wanna turn the page and get the chance to see what's next !... And eventually going back to it later on, because it was so good ...

A mention to the color treatment & light, the settings & overall atmosphere, along with the music : it all contributes wonderfully to create this pretty magical piece of a movie :)

Mulan (2020)
8/10
Epic, mesmerizing, and deeply emotional ...
5 September 2020
A poetic journey of epic & emotional proportions, fueled with a profound and pure humanity, and with a subtext that is gonna resonate with numerous people all over the world ...

First, the photography and all the visual language that both grab you from beginning to end, are a true delight for the eyes ... A majestic fresco, with a color treatment that highlights each & every shot. Yes, the photography is really striking and can't leave you insensible. Also, the music inhabitates every chapter with an immense grace, and accompanies this emotional journey alongside Mulan in the most grandiose way !

The screenplay keeps the same main beats as the original animated version, but upgrades the storyline as a whole, with more subtlety and depth ... Yifei Liu has a magnetic presence and transmits us a lot of emotions through her so expressive eyes ...

Of course, the choregraphies and the staging also have a very finely crafted artistic language, which flows like a smooth dance, throughout the movie ... Obviously there are some iconic scenes and images that nicely punctuate the adventure and participate to make it evolve into an ever more epic & emotional story.

Mulan's interactions with each character, are a big strenght of the movie, they all are a step and a deciding element in her evolution as a woman & hero, from the very first scene up until the very last scene.

A beautiful movie, on many levels.

Musical but not only. Icelandic but International. Fun, but entertaining & also emotional ...
6 July 2020
Such a 'feel good' movie ! Had a smile on my face (and a few tears at times) all along the movie ... I enjoyed this musical adventure from beginning to end. For sure a comedy, but with a big heart.

Will Ferrell is a genius, not just comedic but also creative. He also is a multifaceted talent who can infuse his ideas and concepts in all kinds of fields ! You clearly can feel his passion for music & soft spot for Eurovision (and everything it means ; a competition yes, but with this sense of community around the passion of music). Also, the will to show this sheer 'togetherness' through this international event that is Eurovision, is obvious and enjoyable to see, hear & feel all through the movie.

Rachel McAdams' character (Sigrit) wonderfully balances Will Ferrell's character (Lars). While Lars' only focus is music & becoming famous worldwide, Sigrit brings her sweetness and large palette of deeper emotions. Two eternal dreamers that answer to one another in the most organic way. Because the chemistry between both actors is a gem that's really pleasant to witness in every scene they are together !

The supporting cast (Dan Stevens, Pierce Brosnan & Melissanthi Mahut, for the most part) all nicely serve the evolution of the plot and highlight the two leads in the best possible way. And even if the movie is over-the-top at times, it also breathes multiple realistic emotions and situations that always work in this type of movie... Making you invested, cheering and feeling moved as much as you feel entertained. The movie isn't just gonna make you laugh or shed tears, because the whole soundtrack is very catchy ! The stage performances and production value pop with radiant lightings & colors !

Certain scenes are really efficient and worth rewatching (the Semi-Finals' scene is exhilarating, the Song-Along one is a blast, the Final's song,...etc).

Once again a Will Ferrell movie that might become a classic.

Radioactive (2019)
7/10
Not the typical biopic. A woman driven by a vivid desire to think further & beyond...
6 July 2020
Radioactivity. How it happened to 'be' ?... Everyone has their intentions, motivations, preferences and priorities ... Humanity as a whole, is a complex combination of opposed ideals.

And Marie Sklodowska Curie has played a pivotal role in the history of human kind. She did not know what humans would do/create from her discoveries ... We do not control what will occur of our inventions, discoveries, creations, or even speeches ... It is the history of human kind. From all that has been done in the past, others will build on this to create or discover more, others will benefit from it, etc. There is good and bad that can be found in all things ... Everything is not just defined by what it is/seems to be but by the use that we make of it ; from everything one can generate good or bad, then sometimes by wanting to do good, you end doing harm and vice versa,... etc.

What I liked about this pretty piece of cinema, is all the introspective/character study aspect of the movie, her life trajectory, her passion, her total investment in what she believed in. Unreserved, honest, blunt, raw, straight, self-assured, unapologetic. A type of personality that forces the admiration (or to the least some consideration), for the reason that whether we like/agree or not, it deserves respect because Marie always has an approach imbued with a great sincerity, guided by her heart's deep passion. She never justifies why she is the way she is or try to fit in, she is and does how she wants to ; unapologetically, like I said before.

She now is among the greatest feminine icons while never searching for that but simply always did everything she wanted to do, without asking the permission to anyone. And Rosamund Pike (as always) brings her A-game, with a delightful blend of determination & sensibility. Sam Riley is very endearing in the role of Pierre Curie. Congratulations to the makeup artists, costume designers and the whole production design ! The late 18th~early 19thecentury looks truly authentic. The lighting and color palette serve the atmosphere quite nicely too...

Of course, how not to mention Marjane Satrapi's sharp vision of this singular and so important story (and page of history)... There are many layers of emotion, and you very much feel for Marie, throughout the movie.

Definitely a powerful movie it is.

Birds of Prey (2020)
8/10
Fantabulous Cinematic Experience, a fun & colorful ride alongside Harley Quinn !
4 April 2020
I was not expecting it to be that entertaining and so nicely paced !... It flows really well from beginning to end. It has a great artistic touch to it, lots of stunts & choregraphies are pretty creative (several sequences are really striking), the settings as well as the lightings look very vibrant & colorful... The entire movie is magnificently shot & framed, the photography is eye-candy with some shots that look magnificent.

Yes, the story/plot isn't the most groundbreaking ever, but the way it's built is pretty cool... Plus it is served by dialogs that are highly tasty, with interactions & one-liners that are a true delight. The chemistry between all the actors is obvious and shows ; which of course is pleasurable and makes you want to follow this "adventure" and know what's coming next for these characters...

Talking about the characters, I think it's one of the strenghts of the movie. The writers, the director & the actors clearly enjoyed developing the characters, their traits/personalities, backgrounds, motivations, qualities & flaws. It grounds them in a nice way and makes you relate. Through Harley Quinn, Margot Robbie offers a fun performance that is worthy of Harlequin (with choregraphies & lines that are flamboyant), also adding numerous layers that make you picture the way her mind works and makes you appreciate each of her actions even more. And the whole experience of the movie definitely benefits from it. The other characters combine smoothly with one another, and each one has multiple moments when to shine. A mention to Ewan McGregor who (as always) has brought a great energy and presence to his character, making him pretty electrifying in every scene he's in.

One last mention for the brilliant costume design & makeup artistry, superb... The music/soundtrack is catchy and works well all along the movie. Margot Robbie/Harley Quinn's voiceover is a good idea and also works well with the movie and its specific atmosphere.

Overall a really fun & very colorful cinematic experience, with several striking scenes, cool sequences and characters whose adventures you want to follow...

All the Jedi in me... May the Force be with you, always.
21 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The first feeling I've had at the end of the movie, was : "Thank you". Thank you J. J. Abrams for everything you've done. Trying hard to give a beautiful conclusion to this Skywalker saga that means so much to so many people ; you included. And it shows.

The strenght of the movie clearly is the emotional journey that spreads all along this intense & spectacular adventure of epic proportions. It takes place 3 years after the events of "The Last Jedi", thereby all our main protagonists have evolved and now all have to deal with the return of a familiar face : Palpatine.

The struggle between the light & the darkness has never been so vivid. Our bloodline can or can not define who we are, because at the end of the day it always comes to our own choices anyway. And it's never too late to change the course of events ; as long as there is life, there still can be hope.

Keeping alive a strong belief into this hope : that is a central theme of the entire movie. The love, the empathy, and the will to work together for a greater purpose.

Another aspect that is immense and the heartbeat of this final episode, is the deep link between Rey & Kylo/Ben... With the influence of past mentors & parents to bend the destiny in a precise direction. And despite the doubts that litter the story and the destinies of our protagonists, all these connections make this film a wonderful ode to symbiosis/working together for a common benefit. Which always is the key to the development of life itself. And it very much is what the force is meant to be. Because without life : it's nothingness.

The new additions (characters), plot twists, and even the cameos, all play an important part in the progression up until final chapters of the movie ; the "grand finale". And having Ben back to life, thanks to Leia's sacrifice (the life of a bright soul in exchange for another soul to be redeemed), in addition with Han's heartwarming words... Luke giving Rey a nice push, with light side teachings that are as well heartwarming.

Rey facing her dark destiny, but by always staying faithful to what she believes in. And Ben finally back to light in a most epic way. Those are emotional bits that can give you so many chills... The gorgeous space battle brings a grandiose epicness to these last scenes, with all these ships and people unifying for a common goal. All of this in the name of the peace for the galaxy as a whole.

How not to talk about all the Jedi in Rey !... Giving her the only thing that is powerful enough to erase the Sith once and for all, which is : the unity. Which is something that the Sith are incapable of doing. The rule of two is the result of the selfishness that is an inherent trait of what being a Sith is. Each Sith wants the unlimited power, and he wants it all for himself. While the Jedi always consider the benefit common to all... And having Rey, who is a Palpatine by blood, but a Skywalker by heart (as referred at the very end of the movie, btw), being the tip of the "lightsaber" ; it is quite simply a moment of relief.

Then, the moment that divides the audience, which is Ben's death (who btw had an impressive and already very emotional path, when facing the knights of ren in order to save Rey)... This is the scene where everything converges in the most moving way. Rey dead, inert. Ben, doing the greatest generous act that, which is not just a force healing, but a "force resurrecting". To me, there is a logic behind Ben's death. Because again, a life for a life... Rey was not simply injured, but dead. And Ben is very aware he has commited horrors since years (like Vader did). He then meets the greatest redemption that can be, which is offering his life for the woman he has fallen (in love) for. All of this, in the most genuine way... Because Ben is not Kylo, he is the most generous soul that is, and we can see a glimpse of it at this very moment. He knows Rey is the right heir to a more balanced world... Without Jedi & Sith, but a new order, symbolized by a force user that lies in-between. As a descendent of the greatest bloodlines of each side.

Yes, Ben would probably have deserved a funeral and/or a force ghost... I can agree with that, but I don't fall into the hatred bandwagon because of things that I consider as details. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see new/future editions of the movie, including such things. But I also would be fine if it stays this way. Why ?... Because Ben has played his role in all of this, in the best possible way ; and to me that's what matters the most. Plus we have Rey coming back to Tatooine, right in the Lars homestad (which is a truly peaceful moment to witness)... Paying hommage to Leia & Luke, and marking this new era of peace by leaving their two lightsabers at rest. What a soothing symbol it is.

The last scene satisfied me even more, with Rey now having a last name that defines who she truly is... Which is the disciple and in a sense the spiritual daughter of both Leia & Luke, but also the lover of Ben Solo/Skywalker who gave her a new life (resurrection/rebirth). And what a sweet feeling to see this yellow/golden-bladed lightsaber which evokes the Jedi Temple Guards, because in a way, Rey now is imbued with the role of Guardian/Protector of the Force itself...

How satisfying and soothing all this movie was to me. All these deep & intense emotions... But also lots of memorable scenes of a visual standpoint ! With new planets, locations & settings...or revisiting places like the Death Star we know so well, but now in ruins... The lightsaber fights were imbued with these emotional vibes that can be felt all along the movie, and looked really cool (I mean, it's Star Wars) ! Also, Finn & Poe of course, but also Chewbacca & C3-PO : all the secondary characters all have a moment to shine and play a pivotal role for the greater story. I don't forget Leia and the wonderful way they seemlessly integrated Carrie Fisher into this movie, by building scenes around her performances. Lando & Palpatine coming back, were a great fun, and hearing all the past Jedi voices was a magical feeling...

I am very much aware that this movie won't please everyone. But I wish people could be able to appreciate this piece of cinematic art for what it is. Because concluding a saga of such a scale (and resonance) is an achievement that automatically is meant to displease lots of people. The Star Wars' fandom feels some sort of ownership and it makes every creative choice (such as killing a character ; which George Lucas however did with Anakin, Qui-Gon, Mace Windu, Padmé...) a burden to carry. Because the audience hardly is able to accept certain specific turns.

Which is sad, because at the end... Only the story & in this case the saga as a whole, with everything that it means and all the messages, the philosophy, the emotions & all the teachings that it spreads... Only this truly matters, because that's what continues to live within us, eventually. And whether a character dies or not, he continues to live on anyway in our memory. Because characters serve the story that is told to us. We are the audience, fans eventually. But even if we consume and spend money, it nonetheless stays a piece of art that naturally is subject to our judgment but that is not for us to tell what the creators behind it must do. I mean, for this there are fan films. You would not have told Picasso how he should have painted this or that painting, just because you personally don't like it. Because even if disagreeing of any component of a movie is a fair thing ; every element participates to the creation of this piece. And in the case of such a saga, it's even more of a complicated structure to build. So, if you call into question many components of this saga, then you have to redo the whole thing.

It is what it is, whether you like it or not. Nothing is perfect (and like normality, perfection only exists in the eye of its bearer), but there are so many things to enjoy from it !... And in my eyes, I see it as a blessing to have the chance to witness such an achievement on a cinematic art standpoint.

Thank you Star Wars for everything that you have brought to my life. May the Force be with you, always...
